You will most likely find that the "3-Ply Birch" you ordered is the wrong stuff. I am guessing (by my experience with it), but it will most likely have very thin birch veneers with lousy fill between the two plys. Will eventually fall apart. I looked at 5 different suppliers and it was all the same.

You need to ask for "Bender Board " at your local hardwood supplier. It is also known as "Italian Poplar." These are the more common names of "Lite-Ply" outside of the model world. It has three equal size plys of consistent thickness. Weighs in at less than 8 pounds for a 4 X 8 Sheet compared to the 12 pounds for the "3-Ply Birch." Came in at $16.99 a sheet.

Let us know what you get.

My "Italian Poplar" which the hardwood supplier called "Bender Board ," actually had "Lite-Ply" painted on the side of the stack. Compared it to the kit stuff that I had at home and it is exactly the same.

Hope this helps

Cheers

Look in the phone book under Hardwood. Anyone who stocks hardwood flooring and panelling is a start. I got mine at MacBeath Hardwood .

Home Depot and Lowes may be able to order it(not sure since I no longer need to look), but you may pay a premium from them. Ask a concrete contractor friend if you have one where they get "bender board" since they use it in forms all the time in curve applications.

Aircraft ply in the sizes indicated can be had at your Local hobby shop. Sig also sells the stuff in sizes that will work. You can always go to Lone Star Models as well.

Cheers

SilverEagle2, thanks for the info on the plywood. Unfortuntely, since I special ordered this stuff I am most likely commited to buying it. The 3 ply birch is what Mike Hurley told me to ask for so I figured it was the right stuff and buying it sight unseen would be OK. My loss I guess. I did email Lone Star Balsa regarding 4x8 sheets of lite-ply. He replied that he can get it in 4x8 sheets, but the grain would be cross sheet instead length wise. The cross grain would obviously not be good strengthwise for the fuse sides. I guess I may have to go Italian Poplar hunting now.

Hey Guys why could'nt you splice the light ply together you can get it in 12"x48" a good splice joint is just as strong as one solid piece of light ply. Randy

Well, I called a local plywood supplier this morning and they can get Italian Poplar, aka. "bender board" for me. They sell it for $14.40 a sheet. It also comes in both 4x8(grain lengthwise) and 8x4(grain widthwise) sheets. This leads me to believe that it is the same stuff that Lone Star gets(8x4), since their email says that the grain runs widthwise. Oh well, does anyone know what I can use a 4x8 sheet of 1/8" 3 ply birch for?

Yes, the grain needs to run lengthwise on the sheet. That is the problem with the 4x8 sheet that Lone Star Balsa can get. They can only get wood with the grain running widthwise.

Has anyone ordered or better yet received the (less expensive) foam cores from Flying Thingz yet? I am curious about the quality. At half the price of the other company, it is hard to beat.

And he has yet to get his plans. Will be cutting this week according to him. He sent me a pic of other work and it looks great. He guarantees that his work is as good if not better than competitors. Nice guy too!

Cheers

SilverEagle2, Thanks for the info on Flying Thingz. If he guarantees his work than it is pretty much a no brainer as to which cores to go with.

I have had quite a time finding the 70" lite ply for the fuselage and this is what Mike Hurley found for me. He asked that I post the following to help others in the same predicament:

" I''ve located a shop here
in Denver that is willing to ship a sheet cut into four strips 11 1/2 inches
x 96 inches. One sheet should be all the lite ply you need for the Extra.
Give them a call (sorry they do not have e-mail)

Consolidated Hardwoods Inc.
11850 Vance St
Broomfield, CO. 80038
303-466-1839
fax 303-469-3580 "

They were very helpful and quite nice to deal with.

Mike also wanted everyone to check out the AMA website that has loads of pictures and much more detail.

Is the ply that you are getting from Consolidated Hardwoods Italian Poplar or is the 3 Ply Birch? Mike told me to look for 3 ply birch, that is why I am asking. There seems to be some question as to whether the 3 ply birch is really "lite ply" as most of us know it.
