Just a thought and would appreciate any feedback. How about building a Backpack helicopter using 4- 150 cc model engines that can each pruduce up to 70-80 pounds of thrust each. I am aware of the dangers with all the concepts out there now as far as flying in high altitude but what about one that can just lift a person 5-10 feet off the ground so you could fly/hover around and only fall a few feet should engine failure occur. I'm thinking of building a prototype and would appreciate any knowledge/feedback on this subject. Also, if anyone is in the Los Angeles area and interested in taking a role in building it, let me know...two or three heads are better than one.

Of course it is dangerous, those blades store allot of energy and a wreck might be a slight fall but the blades could do allot of damage. But if we listen to the safetly nazis and turn our backs to everything that approved in their nerfworld view then we are timid for sure. I say understand the risks, wear the best safety gear that suits the purpose (full face helmet, police type stab vest etc. and go for it.

that made it to a mythbusters episode... also check out what moller has built throughout time, i think he had a duel ducted fan design that flew, sort of...

they all have some basic problems. thrust to weight for a ready to fly setup in that size is tough, best case scenario and you are just borderline. stabilization is going to be challenge, and obviously the entire thing is incredibly dangerous.

Lol...the Moller never got off the ground under its own power from what I can see. Look even at the latest video of it on the discovery channel and you can still see the crane in the background and the cable holding the "aircraft" up....

Good luck with your backpack...maybe some type of multiple ducted fan?!?!

as someone just said, Inspector gadget did have a petrol chopper that came out of his hat...

perhaps you could build a motor and rotor on top of a hat for stability? kinda like a high-wing trainer aircraft, atleast then it may be more stable
