Here is another good reference for batteries.

http://www.batteryuniversity.com/

Maybe you can give me a good reference for soldering, because I am terrible at it.

That's exactly what I did. Go to youtube.com and do a search for 'Deans Soldering'. There are several very informative videos that show how to do it properly. This had been my first time soldering also but I tackled the task like a champ and only messed up once. The negative connector on one of my females got so hot that it melted the plastic around it and it got a little out of place which made it very hard to connect to a male. I chucked that one and replaced. Overall, I think I did a good job and so far haven't had any come loose...and yes, I pull them apart by the wires >.< Good luck on your project and please, don't burn yourself.

Helping hands is some good advice, I think that is what they are called. I had my wife help me hold mine while I soldered until she got burnt also then I bought the fly-tying clamps(same thing as the "helping hands" and it made a world of difference.

Or just pliers with some rubber bands to hold em I've been soldering some motors and stuff, and I've got the hang of it. I just don't use flux, so that put me back alot.
