Hello all, Got me an evader ext on friday and sunday stripped the spur gear. Ordered new ones monday nite  and got them today (awesome). I ordered a couple plus some slipper clutches to have around. But before I replace it I have a couple questions.

1. What caused the gear to strip so fast?
2. Anything I can do to prevent it?
3. The diffrential seemed very loud. Any fix for that.
4. What mods do you suggest before taking the truck to the track.

I also would like to change the wheels to a black 3 spoke or 5 spoke. Any suggestions on what will fit?

Thanks Mike

1 the gear stripped because of either bad mesh, bad landing or
maybe just a bad one from factory. the top shaft could be bent
also but is pretty unlilky.
2 to prevent this i use a better quality nylon spur like the
ones from robinson racing, and always make sure the mesh
is adjusted correctly. and adjust your slipper to slip before it wheelies.
3 the diff is enclosed, are you sure it isnt something else being noisy?
turn the rear wheels in different directions while holding the spur
steady, this should let you know if its the diff. they hardly ever
give trouble. what sort of noise it it? clicking or grinding or something?
you may find its something else all together.
4 before you hit the track i would get a mg servo.
not sure on the wheels.
oh and to any new comers, welcome to the forum.

Thanks for the ideas on what to check. I will start putting the new one in soon.

Is the stock motor good enough to run against other stock trucks? I know I am new but i want to a least be somewhat competitive.
Thanks for the advice. I am sure I will be saying that alot.

By the way. What would be a bad landing? It did strip shortly after a couple of jumps (spur gear).

A bad landing would technically be when you land with the driven wheel speed not closely matching the ground speed. Like landing at full throttle on a jump you took off from at half throttle, or landing with the wheels stopped when you took off from a jump at full throttle. It puts huge shock loads on the entire drivetrain when it happens, as you may already know, one of the functions of the slipper clutch is to reduce the shock loading by slipping and converting the energy to heat and sound. But don't set the slipper too loose or you'll loose a lot of power in the form of heat and risk melting the spur and/or slipper pad.

I see, so landing at full throttle is bad,lol .  I am new so there is no telling what I will tear up before long. Thanks for the info.

i was also meaning the landing could have hit
the motor plate, and bent it slightly or shunted
the motor against/away from the spur.

Ok installed new gear and the grinding noise is gone .   But here I go again with more questions.

1. How do you know if you slipper clutch is adjusted properly?

2. I purchased some venom 3000 nimh batteries. These have to be better than the 1500 I was running, right?

3. I would like to upgrade the motor and esc (constanly shuts down dtx sending me a new esc) and  stay in stock class racing. any ideas

4. Is the stock radio ok now or should I upgrade it also?

Thanks again for the help.

. I also bought a himoto emxt-1 off ebay (cheap) and it flies. Anyone know anything about these trucks?

ok the slipper has a tendancy (on some trucks) to
self tighten, of it does this you can just slighlty squash
the bolt with pliers ir a vice. to set the slipper there are
a number of threads if you look it up with different
techniques. what i do is set it loose. not loose loose
so the spring and washers are loose but just so it
slips heaps. have everything turned on, and keep tightening
the nut, and then hitting the throttle till it starts to pull the front
wheels up.set it so it doesnt wheelie, and your done.
sorry if that doesnt make sense.

your venom batteries will give you significant power and
runtime increase compared to the 1500's , but theres better
batteries out there. the stock motor isnt the best, any 19t or
27t motor will run better than the stock motor.
the ecs's are a bit touch and go. some have had them fail
easily, some like me (mine has lost reverse) has run everything
from 14t motors to drill motors on 3s. i wouldnt recommend putting
any lower than 19t in it or 7 cell. tops.
hope this helps.

unless you want to spend bucks on radio gear like fm or 2.4 ghz there is some
pretty good am stuff out there, i use a traxxis tq transmitter
and reciever, and the range is great. they come stock on most traxxas products.

1. Slipper clutch adjustment isn't an exact science, you want the slipper loose enough to slip when there are shock loads but tight enough to not slip during normal driving, you will have to do a bit of experimenting, try tightening it all the way then loosening it a full turn, then adjust from there as needed.

2. Yes, those Venom 3000mah pack will provide a bit more punch and run time.

3. You will want to get an ESC that has a reverse lock-out feature for racing, as for the motor, the Trinity CO27 is a great motor, almost some sort of super-powered mutant stock motor, but be aware of the maintenance you need to perform to keep it in good shape.

4. The stock radio is pretty good for a RTR package, but if you're planning to race then I would suggest getting a 2.4ghz radio system, there are a few entry level 2.4ghz systems on the market as of now at around the $80-100USD range.

As for info on the Himoto trucks, I haven't a clue, but Himoto has a support forum here on RCU so you can ask there.

Appreciate the help guys. Going to pick up a 19t fireball (sounds bad) motor 2morrow. I have not used the 3000 batteries yet going to get me a better charger first.

Lol I told my wife it would be fun to have 1 of these trucks for cheap. She likes it as much as I do and so we are going to get her one next week but she wants the buggy version.

Word of caution: The Venom Fireballs have a horrible reputation for failing in the most horrible ways, and even if they don't fail, they don't perform as well as better quality motors in the same winding. I assume you are going to your LHS, if so, see if they have any Team Orion or Team Associated motors in the $20-30 price range.

I used to run a Venom Fireball 17 turn in my Evader, it was slightly faster than the stock 20 turn that came with the truck, but it ran hotter and would cause the ESC to overheat when driven hard. It would also sometimes cause the solder on the joints between the motor windings and the comm plates to melt and fling off coating the inside of the can with wee specks of solder.

a little info on the diffs... the stock gear diff in the ext SHOULD hold up to BL power i ran a stocked diff in a locked setup for quite a while with out any issues, tho i lost my case screws due to stripped out motor plate and that killed it... but if you loose those screws your diff is toast...

orion has some great motors for $30, then you can pull the bearings outta your fireball and use um in that orion

all ext parts are comptaitlbe with ST parts excpet the tranny case, diffs, bones, drive cups on the hubs, idler, and uhh i think thats it... basically the entire tranny except i believe the motor plates, and the top gears, are the same just the cases are different...

Hey guys,
was wondering if anyone had any Ideas of a cheap receiver that could work with my plain (non-pro) evader st radio.
Really need to replace mine, still the original duratrax receiver, I seem to be loosing range month after month.

Would this work with stock radio? (i know its discontinued)
xxtra

Also, could anyone explain me the difference between 27 and 75mhz? Is it just the frequencey or is one better than the other?

Thanks

I personally use this one, http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXJM12&P=7, but i don't know what kind of ESC you use, i use the tamiya TEU-101BK. Te reciver works pretty good but i'm not an expert. And as for the difference between 27 and 75mhz i can't answer. Just my 2 cents worth lol.

frequency you got your 27, for all uses, your 50 of all uses tho i think its mostly air, 72 for air only 75 or surface only and then 2.4 for everything
then to trow another wrench into the equation you got your AM and FM <- don't apply to 2.4 cuz its that cool i don't believe AM and FM are compatable... so the XXtra RX wouldn't work... you need to match the frequencey (27,75,2.4 unless you're flying) and the channel and the band (AM- FM) with the TX and RX...

btw i saw someone posted something about an AL B2 follow my sig and you can purchase them for $28, not including shipping from austrailia...

Edit: But will this Receiver work with the stock (non-pro) radio?

Had my first race today with the evader ext, Had to beg and plead to let me race with the slash class (  no other 1/10 the scale electric) so I did. I finished the first heat in 5th out of 12 and 2nd heat 4th. Not to bad I didnt think for my first time and racing against what are supposed to be better trucks and using my all mighty photon 2  .

If my 2 cents are worth anything the slashs dont look all that after all, but they do get great local part support.

the buggy will be quicker either way cuz its lighter, and can be geared up more, my B4 eats my evader for speed its that much lighter and faster....

as for the RX, the XXtra won't work cuz its FM, the stock is AM, the pro is too... tho great radio...
