Does anyone have any experience with this sailplane? I am assuming it is new for 2006. Any comment appreciated. Thank you. bob

Hi bob , ptb here!
That's no ascent there! I have a breeze 1 and it's heavy!
This glider is probably made by the same people, as it's also heavy.
check the wing loading, I don't think there will be any floating around
with this one!

I have one and have flown it a couple of times. I am not experienced in thermal soaring so I cannot be objective in this matter. Has anyone flown this baby? I think it's a great flyer. Way faster than expected and super thrilling to fly. I'd love to hear some opinions! thanks.

I'll be doing a kit review for this one soon, for Quiet Flyer magazine. Looks like a hottie, from first inspection-- comes with a Cermark outrunner. I expect mini-hotliner performance, with maybe some thermalling in good air.

Guys,

Check out my review of the Cermark Victor in the latest (Vol 12-3, March 2007) issue of Quiet Flyer.

I REALLY like it! Best feature-- the mini-hotliner performance, with unlimited vertical climb rate on the Cermark brushless motor, and fast fly-bys. Biggest surprise-- it thermals really well, even in light lift. This thing is going to be FUN.

I also like the compactness of the design, easy to just toss in the back of my pick-up truck with the wings still on it, so I can brake to a stop at the first sign of lift and toss it out there. Gotta love that. It is also a quality piece of kit, with no junkiness factor anywhere. This is me talkin' here, not the pulp pages.

Other Victor flyers please chime in here.

Don

Read your review, and agree completely with your summary. In a succinct sentence, a superb all rounder. But you left out an important part.

The Cermark Victor is obviously EZY/Pilot's Turmeric dressed up in new clothes and rebadged under the Cermark branding targeted to appeal to the US market. That BTW is a good thing. Why change a fantastic design? We can't get Turmerics locally any more. <sob>

Originally manufactured in Japan by EZY/Pilot and supplied with a canned speed 400 driving that 10x 8 folder through an MPJ 3.3.1 planetary gearbox and that MPJ alloy spinner, production of the Turmeric was shifted offshore to PRC sometime in either '04 or '05. But apart from the price, nothing much else changed. The canopy was tinted amber instead of smoke, and latched with a wooden latch and velcro instead of those superb nylon MPJ latches, but notably, the superb QC was retained. Sometime in '06, the Turmeric was transformed into the Turmeric G2, the suffix I rightly or wrongly deduced meant to indicate Generation 2. In the G2, gone was the canned 400, and included was a Tahmazo brushless outrunner. Apart from a minor colour change on the underside of the wings, and a lighter TOW she was the same beautiful bird.

I have the original Turmeric (PRC production), but gone is the old speed 400 kit shedding nearly 100 grams of battery, motor and gearbox weight. My current setup isn't terribly dissimilar to yours. Driving that 10 x 8 folder is a Hyperion Z-2213 24 powered by a 3S1800 20C VX LiteStorm LiPo through a 30A Hyeprion ESC/w BEC. Servos are per recommended by Pilot, the specific low profile Futaba wing and OK fuselage units. Similar to your own setup, mine is configured through GLID in my venerable but now synthesized X-388S. She's so clean, I have configured mine with aileron spoilers, and wish she had flaps for butterfly into some of the smaller fields.

If I had to have one sport e-sailplane, this would be it.

So Cermark Victor or Pilot Turmeric, she's a rose as sweet by any name. I agree with Don. Do yourself a huge favour and buy one.

Sigrun,

Thanks for the history! I knew the Victor used to be the Pilot Turmeric, but I didn't know much else. Better to write what you know, I always say.

I used E-flite S75s for my ruddervators, and they were not up for the job. The bit of flutter I experienced was from the excessive gear slop. Changed them out to Hitec HS55s and problem solved. You can fill in the why of my not mentioning servo brand names in the article.

I wish the underside were a different color than grey. Orange would have worked better, for visibility, and would have been in keeping with the overall color scheme. Oh, well, I've not had a problem with that yet.

As I said in the article, the Victor filled a hole in my hangar that I didn't even know was there. It's a little pocket rocket, that you can grab at a moment's notice, and when you get to the field, you've got all the performance you will ever need. What a clever little toy!

Don.

G'day Don,

Cermark's got a winner here if they make the Victor's qualities known. I agree with you. They really do need to give that horrible grey underside the huge heave ho. Whoever's short sighted decision that was has either never flown an RC model of any sort, or is an wannabe' bean counter who thought that buying super-discounted covering was sure to get him noticed. Congratulations. It has.

By comparison, the underside of the turmeric's wing is base navy blue and with a small red and white sunray to break the solid colour outline, with a reversement to base red with navy and white sunburst for the G2 to distinguish it. Fuse is gelcoat white all over in both cases, but is easily and beautifully repainted with a Tamiya polycarbonate paint spray can for those with a preference for any colour but white. Top wing surface is contrasting light yellow. A sensible scheme for the RC sailplane environment.

I think your article summarised the Victor's strongpoints rather well. In particular she is a superb choice for the already competent RC pilot looking for his first sailplane. e-power relieving dependence upon winch, bungee or aerotow and all the nuisance they encumber at any operational power orientated flying field. Full house controls with independent aileron servos for superb aerobatic performance, also allowing spoil or flaperons and differential mixing. V-tail for obstacle clearance. A strong, quality yet light build. Large enough at 1.6M to handle well (Reynolds) and have a visual presence for sport flying, yet small enough to easily transport, but more importantly power. Clean enough to be fast, exciting to fly and penetrate on the slope with room for ballast if needed, yet light enough to climb like a RATO assisted intercepter on a low cost brushless set to height in search of a thermal where she'll float an angel off a frog's f@rt in weak broken bubble coastal conditions.

And for those that just want to play with her under 100% power like an ersatz hotliner, she'll do that too. The Victor's all roundedness is its indisputable hallmark. At does everything well, and nothing badly.

I'm still flying mine, with the stock Cermark outrunner motor. Wouldn't part with it for anything. I just had it out a couple of weeks ago, in marginal Seattle air, and it was up for nearly an hour on one charge.

I lost my canopy over the tall grass yesterday, and Cermark said they don't have any spares in their inventory. They said all they have in the way of spares is a couple of wing sets. So I get to make my own canopy for a replacement. Victor owners beware... I should have had a positive latch rather than rely on the Velcro patch.

Hey sawdust, the Turmeric is still available for what I think is a great price, http://www.ohyesrc.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1_139&products_id=318.
