NukeDoc: Sorry to derail your thread. But to try and bring it back on topic... If you want to record direct to memory stick, it looks like the Aiptek MPVR is the easiest solution, as it will take an A/V IN signal and record straight to a memory stick. Done. Other solutions exist, but will require additional steps (eg: converter box, etc.).

Yes, me too. Sorry for that but here is some redemption. This is a tapeless solution but very expensive! Panasonic has recently released a new camcorder called the HVX200 HDV that records to tape or to P2 memory cards. The good news is that they are about the size of a credit card and will hold up to 45 minutes of SD broadcast quality video and currently up to 10 minutes of HD. The bad news is the camera costs around $7000 and the P2 cards are $1700 a piece.

Another option for tapeless recording on the ground can be found at this link.

Here is an onboard solution that records to memory cards up to the capacity of the card that you choose! Check out the quality of this footage from the video below at full screen and it is even slightly compressed. This Casio Exilim EX-Z750 camera costs around $400 and only weighs 4.5 oz. and 5.64 oz. with battery and memory stick.

Here's the thread with all the details.

If you're talking about not being connected to a vehicle yes, but what you mentioned is what I'm already doing with a simple $50 power inverter with two AC outlets.

I'm talking about using a regular 12V field battery (see pic) to power the video converter and the wireless receiver (if 12V). And if you have any low power consumming 5V devices, use a cheap voltage regulator from Radio Shack: http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062599&cp=&kw=voltage+regulator&parentPage=search

Yes, I meant what you knew. What I should have said was it's not much different than powering from the truck with an inverter except you get to carry that 5 lb battery with you instead of using the truck's and be tethered to it. Either way I think it's inconvenient. Here is another company that specializes in portable power.

Well, as long as you're not going hiking before your flight, I would think carying a 12V battery with you is still the better option. C'mon... it's only 5lbs.

BTW, a new MPVR ended earlier today with no bids at all. It started at $136: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7587930100&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1 Would have been a good deal for somebody. I ALMOST bid on it. But I'm looking at getting a wireless system soon, so I couldn't pull the trigger on this purchase also. There's a dealer selling them for $144 though. He's got 13 left... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5864005961&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1

Good call, skycam, why didn't I think of that? Archos has a bunch of devices like that, some that will take composite inputs and record straight to the internal HD. That would do exactly what the OP wanted, just to an HD instead of flash, which should work just as well (and have greater storage capacity).

Yes, I agree that should work just fine as a recording device if you don't mind the compression. I think it's max resolution is 320x240 so if you expand that it will be pixelated, especially with alot of movement like AP content. Looks like it weighs less than 4 oz. too. I wonder it that's with or without batteries?

Here's an Archos device that would also work. These things are easily found here in the states--pretty sure I've seen them at Frys and maybe Best Buy:

If anyone finds any links to these products in the US, please post them. This looks interesting. Just what we need....more expensive electronics to risk in our already expensive planes...lol

I've been using PVR's for a couple of years now, I use a Mustek AV1 clone (Euro-Cyber PMC-1000), a 40GB PV390 and an Archos AV420. If you want a quality picture then the Archos is your man, but it is reasonably heavy (if you are going to lift it) and obviously contains a mobile hard-disk which won't take too kindly to heavy landings. The Archos has superior resolution (512 x 348) compared to the PV390 which is 340 x 280. The Mustek is really only useful if you are planning on using a low-res CMOS wireless camera as the resolution is pretty poor. I use all three with a wireless system and they stay firmly on terra-firma!

EDIT: Forgot to mention, both the PV390 and Mustek PVR's can record directly to Flash cards

Does anybody have a sample video that was taken with one of these PVR's?

Thanks

Here's a short clip from the Mustek AV1, I'll try and snip out a section from the PV390 which produces huge files........

Troglotech,

Thanks for the video clip. Is the Mustek AV1 a digital camcorder? I couldn't find that model on the web.

Thanks,

No Ed, it's a PVR (Personal Video Recorder) just like the Archos types but cheaper, lighter and records on to Flash (SD card). I keep it on the ground and record via a wireless link......
