I've been flying for almost two years now (except from July to October of 2001). Over this time, I've owned and sold CSM v10 and RFD as well as borrowed G2 for a week to try it out.

I found G2 to be the only one that I could sit in front of for more than 15 or 20 minutes, and then only if in multiplayer. What happens is I'll start practicing backwards or piro circuits and quickly realize the sim heli is doing things the real one would NOT (in backwards flight the tail really wants to push down - even if you make the horizontal and vertical stabs almost non-existent). I get frustrated with the sim and start playing instead of taking it seriously.

The real problem, however, is when I fly the real thing after a week of using the sim. My flying always goes downhill and I feel the same way you feel after a good crash. It usually takes me several flying sessions to get back to normal.

On the forums and in chat, I hear nothing but praise about sims. Am I the only one with these problems? : :

Well, I can only speak for the airplane part of G2...I think it closely resembles what you see at the field and in flight with very few shortcomings. With the heli's as I have limited real flying experience with them much of the simple stuff like hovering and forward flight seems close to reality but on the sim I've also done some wild stuff but never even attempted it when I had my heli years ago so I'm not sure how close that resembles reality...

Might also want to post this question over in the flight sim forum for more opinions there.

I found the RF sim very helpfull for learning to hover in all directions and for starting forward flight.
I also feel that it has built some reflexes that I would not have had. IE: I set it up to run out of fuel and have failures.
This past weekend my engine quit and I was able to auto down without any problems. This is only because of the sim. as I have not practiced autos with the model.
I do agree with you though.
I have reached a point in my flying now that I feel that the sim. causes me more problems then helping as it flys so much different then my model.
I have tried changing the set up in the sim but it still is not the same.

Sorry about the spelling, I sure miss spell check.
Just my 2 cents worth.

yeah I agree the physics of the sims aren't as accurate as we'd like them to be.....in the GP RF sim, you can almost hold a hover for long periods of time by simply not touching the sticks- I don't know about you guys- but most of the heli's I've flown will only hover hands-off for a few secs tops......I primarily purchased the RF sim to help me progress to nose-in hover (I know i'm pathetic) and I believe it is helping me- but I wish for more realism and accuracy in the physics of the helis.

The G2 is, by far my choice!

But you have to look at it as being a real heli.. I mean that you do not just build you heli, then go fly it! you have a bit a set up work to get it to fly the way you want it to.

Same with the sim! you have to play with the weight, power, servo speed, gyro, blades, etc... to get the feel that matches your own heli. If you put as much time in your g2 setup as you do you real heli, you should see great results.

After you do that, load the stock setup again and try to fly in... hehe you will see that all that setup was really worth it.

Check out helibuf's site for a nice starter guide.

Could you give the site address please? I just ordered G2 this week with the thought that I'll do as much practicing as I can before I start flying for the first time next spring. Now if only picking out a heli was as easy as picking out G2

Yes, please give me that link, I've been on the G2 sim for 4 months now and will be flying my nexus this week, just hovering though and would like to setup the sim for real heli physics.

No not quite, I bet a huge percentage of pilots here have used a Sim to perfect maneuvers that needed orientation in to be able to perform the maneuver. Including myself, I am a strong believer in heli Sims.

As for exact realism, no they are not exactly correct in their behavior versus the real thing but for now I believe the latest ones out now are as close as we have for the moment. And to me, they are similar enough to be great teaching & learning tools.

sims may not respond exactly like the real thing, but they're great for hard-wiring your brain to respond to the real thing. the first time anyone tries flying inverted on a sim, they crash left and right. with time you become more proficient and eventually don't even have to think about reversing controls when the ship is inverted. how would you ever learn how to do a tail-down inverted funnel on the real thing? or a piro flip? if your sim is hindering your real flight, then you're not using it to push the envelope, which is what it's for.

Since I could easily hover on my sime Dave Browns RCFS 2001 I thought it would be a piece of cake to do the real thing. I was wrong it still took me some time to get the hang of it. But I'm glad I did work with the sim and would not have progressed as fast as I did if I didn't have it.

I can say a sim will help you tremendously especially if you then go practice the real thing after learning it on the sim. There still will be some transition issues, but the headstart you get will be invaluable.

I feel the same way about sim. I practice inverted hover but as for flying around i dont think it flies the same as the real thing.
I practice for about 20 min. and then just start playing with it.

Did any of you learn how to fly RC helicopters on the RealFlight Sim? I just purchased G2 with the intention of practicing up until I can get my heli in the air next spring and I'm curious about setup of the trainer heli. Is there anything in particular I should do with the setup in order for the heli to be easier to control? Right now I have about 50% expo dialed into the radio, but I'm leary of doing that if I should be learning how to fly these things without any expo at all.
