James, you are right that this should not occure. Not on any airplane at any price. However, the fact is that in production and with the desire to provide a good looking finish, the heat can get turned down a little and the iron moved too quickly. While preventing bubbles and smearing (the effect that occures when an ironned piece shrinks away from its line a little bit leaving a gluey smear line), it does not provide the greatest anchor for the covering. The only sure fix is that the buyer give the entire airplane a once over with a properly heated iron.

Peeling covering has occured on almost every brand of ARF that I have flown regardless of price and I have seen it on expensive professional builds also where the finished look was given such care that not enough heat was used to securely bond the material. I now use a hotter than recommended iron on all seams, trim edges, and covering to wood seams when I first unpack the pieces on all ARF airplanes I buy. Many ARF manufacturers now include this as a step in the construction, something I overlooked on the short construction paper that I wrote for the Synergy 90.

On the Synergy, the covering is Oracover and I still think that that is the best covering available.

Regards,
Mark

This actually happened to me too, and I guess I wasn't as alert. The covering lifted off on one side, exposing the balsa sheeting beneath, creating a pocket of air. Well, the plane didn't quite make it back in one piece, as I wasn't aware of what exactly happened, till I collected the pieces.... I still remember, it was on a vertical down leg, and with the pocket of air on one side, I couldn't recover the plane.

Anyhow, I wouldn't be so quick to blame ZN, because as the plane is being shipped, I'm sure temperature changes will have some effect. I have very little experience with ARFs, and I did not bother to run the iron through for the Synergy. For all my pattern planes, I'm sure of the covering job done, but even when we travel to competitions, we bring the iron along, to reshrink the covering before our first flight, as inevitably, there will some air bubbles, and just to tack everything down once more etc.

So, I think the conclusion we can draw here, is that on ALL ARFs, be sure to reshrink the covering at higher tempratures before your first flight.

I have to say though that about half of the models at our club are now artf, most of the cheaper Chinese type, and for all their faults I have never seen or heard of covering come off to this extent. Start to peel a bit around the edges certainly but never complete failure like this. And for it to have happened on at least two Synergys to my knowledge must start to suggest a problem?

I would however say that in every other respect this plane is superb, and far and away better than every other artf out there (following the ZN tradition of excellence). It's just a shame mine will now look decidely tatty until I inevitable have to completely re-cover the model.

If it is any comfort (not really I know) I have seen it on a Flair Swallow, which is a Chinesse artf.

I have never had problems with flutter or the covering coming off badly on mine, just the trim. I had to re do the wing though after a mid air.

got some nice photos of my synergy yesterday, then I broke it. my fault for showing off!

Hi,

I have an OS-120 SIII Pump and I'm wondering if I could use it with the Synergy. Will I come too nose heavy?

Rgrds,

Nick

Mine was a bit nose heavy with an OS91fx, put the battery and servos back a bit and it should be ok.

Time to start this thread again

I succumbed to a new synergy. Bought this one at £270! And it is called a synergy 91. Looks Identical to the old one. Why the massive price difference? Is it all to copyrights? There are the updates on the plane that have been detailed though the thread. Still did some of my own and ditched all the supplied horns etc. The only kit I have ever used all the supplied hardware is the EF YAK 54 68. The Syn is almost ready to fly and I hope to get it in the air this weekend. I can hardly wait. The YAK is geat and almost flies as well as the Synergy, which is saying something for a near scale plane. The adrenaline, IMO did not cut the mustard. It was OK, but it was a little too heavy/high volume and my YS110 struggled to pull out of the prop hang without being set-up to do this, ie 16 or 17 x 6 prop. i then put a YS 140 in it and worked better, but at a weight penalty.

I still think the synergy is one of the best flying plane available and can wait to fly it.

Cheers

Kris

Hi,

I've just bought a Synergy 91, and am a little unsure of Servo choice, given the large amount available on the Market. To narrow things down i've got a Futaba Receiver and radio.

I'm not flying this at competition or anything, just for personal enjoyment, so i'm wondering what kind of torque the servo's need to be. For the elevators and rudders I know that digital one's will be more beneficial, and for the Ailerons, i'm unsure of what torque servo's to buy, since they are quite large control surfaces.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Harsh

Are they still making the synergy. My pal wants one.

As far as servos go don't use poor servos, I am using HS 5925MG 103oz @ 0.10 sec @ 4.8V and an HS5965MG on the rudder. I have used the HS 6965HB and HS 6975HB in my EF Yak 68" to good effect. Out of the HB and metal geared servos, the HB is my prefered choice as there is no slack in the gear train.

Cheers
