Got the tracks in today (Wife had to pick up from the post office). From what I heard about the Stella-Model tracks I believe that they may be the same ones. They are the open linked style. They have Torro stamped on the outter edge of the inner tracks. They did come with the idlers, sprockets, 2 spare links, 2 brass bushings (no idea where they go), screws and lock washers for the driveshafts, axle pins, and spare link pins.
Here are the picks:

I ordered the dark silvers instead of the black (seemed like it would be a more natural color). All in all compared to the price of the Stella Models I think these are a better deal. For the price they come with the extra links, hardware and the sprockets and idlers. The only thing that I don't like (as with most asian companies) they don't have any intstructions, so now I have to figure out what the brass bushings are for. So far so good they seem to move around nice and smooth. AS soon as I have them on the tank and it is back running again I will post some more info on them.
I got them here Mato

As soon as I get them on the tank I will. I tried to paint one of the idlers tonight without priming it (didn't have any primer at home), but it scrapes off very easy. Definitely have to prime them. I think I am also going to loc-tite the screws securing the sprockets. They come with a lock washer, but I feel safer using the loc-tite as a preventative.

To promote adhesion of the paint to the sprockets and idlers, you might try scuffing/sanding them with 600 grit sandpaper or thereabouts, whichever works best. This will provide a rough surface [i.e. "tooth"] for the paint to stick to.

I may experiment using primer or a base coat of primer that looks like rust (red oxide) then when the top color wears off, there will be "rust" showing and then the high spots that get the most wear will show bare shiny metal.

Regardless, let us know how it turns out.

mariodx3 - Sorry forgot to mention that. They are going on a HenLong Tiger.

Harquebus - thanks for the scuffing tip. A scotchbrite pad may be good for that as well. I was thinking along the same lines as you for the red oxide primer. Have to go pick up a can tomorrow. I may as well pick up a scotchbrite pad while I'm at it.

Does anyone think that I should try and weather the tracks some? I was planning on leaving them the natural color but now I am thinking of weathering them a little. Maybe spraying some Tamiya smoke color over them and a little red brown. Maybe just a mist of it, or one pass with the airbrush.

Stang951,

Before you weather the tracks, you might want to take another look at this link:

Stang:

You'd have saved a bit getting the black ones, as they've already been 'blackened' by that treatment. All ya had to do was ask.

When ya figure out where everything goes, show us eh? Did you get the metal gearset too?

Be sure to give us a report on how it runs after the install, ok?

Wolf - I didn't really want the black. I wanted something a little more realistic looking. I am going to try the permablue method ans see how that turns out. One more thing, was it you that recommended putting a dab of goop or shoe goo on the tracks where the pins are open? If so, do you think that these really need? I see what everyone was talking about where the pins are exposed, just wondering if they really need the stuff there.

For everyone - I have the metal gearset, and now the tracks, sprocket and idler. I couldn't help it tonight and put the tracks, idler and sprocket on the tank unpainted. Mato supplies six pins in the kit as well as 4 spare links. I added a link to each track (to make it easier to put on). I quickly found that putting the extra link in is not a good idea. One track was not riding the sprocket as is should. It had slipped out of the keyways and the sprocket was using the inside of the track to pull it. I also made the mistake of using on epin that was not knurled on one end, so it ended up backing out and bending, causing a track to jump. It was actually pretty cool as the tank was effected as a real tank would have been.
The tracks and all of the metal parts do add a great deal of weight to the tank. More so than I expected. Al-in-all it was awesome. With the sound completely turned off it sounds like a real tracked vehicle on concrete...I love it. Now if only my airsoft barrel would come in so that I could finish reassemly on the tank!!!!

If I get a chance tomorrow I'll take some pics of what I am referring to. And then try and perma blue the tracks and show how that turns out. It does look funny with the metal parts in thier natural color too, but that will change.

OK did the PermaBlue on the tracks and primed the sprocket and idler. Compressor isn't working right so I can't paint anything right now. Here are the pics of the tracks and a mock up of the entire tank together:
I really like how the permablue turned out compared to the Black tracks that are the option to the silver.

After taking the pics I noticed that a couple of wires have come apart and I know where ONE of them goes so more problems to deal with.

Nice!

I have 2 HL Tigers still at the office that I've been considering keeping instead of parcelling out to the local members of the club who don't have tanks. Think I'll try the metal track with one - we still need some other armor for the T-34s & Pershing to play with when no one else is around.

Did you do any "beefing up" of suspension for the metal tracks?Besides using the metal drive and idler.
Also, does it slow the tank down any(hopefully it will make the starts a little slower)
I have one Tiger(no smoke and sound) and another that DOES smoke and sound.
I am thinking of putting these tracks on the "non smoking" to help slow it down,as the smoking tiger does not really have the speed problem.
I have also done the"diode"fix to my "non-smoke"Tiger and Panther, but did not notice very much difference in speed.
I have another thread that asks this, but thought I would ask you anyways!

It looks like it slowed down to me. I would really love to be able to order another TIger and place them side by side to see sure results.

The noly upgrading that has been done to the tank are metal gears in the transmission, metal idlers and sprockets and the tracks. I have done a couple of other things, but nothing that upgraded any parts, just modified them to look more realistic.

Interesting!
Do you think that the standard plastic geared "gearbox" will be destroyed by running the heavier metal tracks?
Should I consider buying the metal "gearbox" in near future?

I would think so since mine was already a little chattery under normal circumstances. The main problem I had seen with my plastic trans was that the teeth had too much side to side play in them. I ntight turns or heavy load the gears could walk across one anotherand the mesh would suffer. ONCE THAt happened and the started clicking damage was already done and there is no way to repair them, just have to replace them.

Stang951,

I can't wait to see the finished product!

I wish that we all lived within driving distance of one another. It would be so nice for us all to get together and play, one day. I can imagine it now; RC tanks as far as the eye can see, tearing through the terraine.

........of course you guys with AXIS vehicles would probably want to surrender and join the ALLIED team by the end of the day.

LOL, Yeah shure Slick....NOT. UNless you had our Tiger outnumbered by 6-1!!LOL

I can't wait to finsih it either. Now I am waiting on wiring diagrams from other members to make sure I wire everything properly, the darned airsfot barrel from Canuckinfantry and a new compressor so I can paint. I tried to exchange it yesterday since it was under the first 90 day warranty, but they were out of them. Have to try again tomorrow or Thursday.

What you have done to the Tiger is what i am pinching pennies to have done to my Pershing.
The metal tracks , sprockets and idler wheels will add wear and tear on the motor, but the metal motor [housing and gears] should off set that.

That said, what about making a heavier duty platform for the motor itself so that it won't torque or tear out the plastic of the tank shell.

Theoretically, you should have a tank that will respond more realistically in the field.

I think strengthening the hull would be fairly easy to do. All one would need is some flat aluminum trimmed to fit the lower hull, some flat strips to add to the sides and be done with it. The problem there I think would be the added weight. The motors that come in the tanks are not that great. I've been thinking of trying some different motors. Only problem is that I only know of RC car motors and don't think that they would supply the amount of torque necessary to drive our tanks. That and most are 540 can size, which is too big to fit the transmissions without rre-engineering them.
