I just re-bearing'd my older 150. Ran like a champ forever, but started to get noisy here recently so apart it came. Still had good compression and the cylinder looked fine, so I just put bearings in 'er. I've reassembled teh engine, checked valve clearances, and there's a distinct "click" as the valves open and close. Hapens on both valves. I can't feel any "catch" when I turn the engine over, and with my fingers on teh valve rockers I can't feel it. I'm sure everything is together, and just in case I wasn't, I dissasembled again and re-checked. Timing is as spot on as I can get it, and the valves aren't contacting the piston, they're moving correctly. The only thing I can think of is that the cam, which has two spacer washers on both sides of the shaft, has too much end play and is moving back and forth. The washers are there, but there's still some movement. This isn't the first 4 stroker I've taken apart and reassembled, but this is the first time I've run across this problem.

If it helps, the engine is apparently an older model, as the cam gear is actually a machined part of the crankshaft and not a seperate piece.

Oh I forgot to mention, the only time you hear the "click" is when the valve train is fully assembled. I can't seem to make it happen with just finger pressure on the pushrods....

Thanks in advance,

Andy

It is normal. All the OS, Saito,Magum, & Y-S four strokes make this noise.

Enjoy,

Jim

Andy:

As Jim said, it's normal to have the clicking noise, but only when the intake is closing. If you are hearing it with the exhaust closing as well as the intake closing you either have a lot too much lash in the timing gears, or more likely the valve adjustment is very loose.

Normally the intake opening resistance keeps the exhaust from pushing the cam shaft, you only hear the noise when the intake tappet goes over center on the lobe.

Set the valve clearance down to 0.0015" and see if you still have the double click. If yes I suppose I'll have to go ahead and write the procedure for setting the gear lash, a task I've been avoiding.

Bill.

Yeah I know click is normal, but not this loud. I never thought about gear lash, I did install a new gasket which would have raised the cam gear a hair. I'll try and assemble engine without gasket and see if it still makes noise, that would point finger squarely at gear lash....

Andy:

You can do a trial assembly with no gasket, but if you screw the cam box down with no gasket the engine should lock up - the gears should bind with zero clearance, actually forced together.

thanks for inputs Bill, when I get a minute I'll search around for how to set the gear lash, it's nice day so I might just bolt it up to test stand and run it a bit to see how it sounds.

I like dry humor, and being a recent seperatee after 7 years I find there's a touch of truth in that statement....

If you find it tell me where. Might save my writing it. As I said, something I've been avoiding.

It's the play, or slop in the straight-cut cam gears the makes the click. It
is from wear. If I'm not mistaken....OS and Magnum use helical cut gears
so the slop and the click are eliminated.

My Magnum and OS engine will click also if they have thin light weight oil in them.

I just listened to two OS 52's and they both clicked. One is new.

Enjoy,

Jim

I checked a couple of my Magnums with plow plugs in them, they don't click.
The helical cut gears keep them from clicking like a Saito.

I'm leaving to go flying with my Magnum 61 on a Slow Poke. It clicks away the same as my OS and Saito engines.

Enjoy,

Jim

If it is running it is going to make a little noise. So I tend to worry more when it won't make any noise. Give it a good going over and if it looks ok buy about 2 cases of fuel and let her rip.
