Hello, If a reg fails, does it shut the power off or does it let full current go threw?

Hello Kelly,
There is no single answer to this. It depends on how a regulator fails. It could do either. This applies to all regulators, not just ours. A regulator is made up of basically a control transistor, through which the current is routed and does the actually regulation, and some control circuits. Different types of transistors will fail differently. A bipolar transistor typically will fail open, a MOSFET will typically fail closed. If something in the control circuit fails it could go either way. It does not matter if the regulator is a single chip or a hybrid, they both can fail in either state. I hope this helps. Please let me know if you would like more information.

So on the Super or Turbo Reg, one reg could fail and it would still work because the controler would continue to allow the other to operate, correct? And if the control circut fails, does it fail open or closed, is it a bipolar or MOSFET transistor?

Do the Turbo and Super reg operate identical except for amp load?

Thanks

Hi,
On the TurboReg we use MOSFETs so if one fails if might let the full voltage through. No way to be positive about this. If the control circuit fails, again no way of knowing if the control
to the pass transistor will cause it to be open or short. This is why we are very careful in the design of our regulators to try and make them tolerant of many things to prevent failure.

Thanks Robert, It was just a curiosity question about Regs. Not any one brand.

Hope to be calling you next week for a Super reg and Power expander.
Thanks agian.

Hi Kelly,
I wish I had a more deterministic answer. Let me know if you have any other questions.
