Flypaper 2 -> RE: Cellpro 4s Balancing Charger (7/28/2006 3:05:45 PM)

Is there a way to Charge Apogee batts with the adapter. ? Seems to fit the PQ section but can't get a connection on the computer screen.

s3tbolt -> RE: Cellpro 4s Balancing Charger (7/28/2006 4:03:21 PM)

You can purchase the FMA "pig tail" and rewire the battery to work with the new charger, I've done this with a non FMA battery, work just fine.

Raybow -> RE: Cellpro 4s Balancing Charger (8/1/2006 2:27:43 AM)

Hi Greg

I also have an E- Flite Edge 540 is there any chance of some pictures of your set up?

Also on these New products battery,charger,etc what do you have incorporated in it?

I am looking at purchasing everything required all at once so if you could give me a note of items required from battery type to the new products i will make my purchase?

max-nix -> RE: Cellpro 4s Balancing Charger (8/20/2006 5:29:53 PM)

I purchased a FMA Cellpro 4s Charger on 6/21/06 but I have not been able to use it. I purchased the charger to use with my existing Li-Pos so I also ordered the Cellpro battery pigtail 7". After a period my back ordered charger was delivered, but I am still waiting for the needed pigtail.

I have been patient so far, but every time the estimated delivery date for said item is reached the date is extended.

Greg Covey has helpfully said that the connector used is JST, PA series, 2mm locking connector but I can not locate one from any of the suggested sources, this is not to say they are not available but perhaps I get lost in the massive jungle of available items.

My question is: can someone provide an exact way to order the needed pigtail?

I have lost faith in FMA supplying the item, perhaps it is not their fault but it would seem that they would assume some responsibility in the matter since the charger is useless in my case despite all of it's capabilities.

rumplestilskin -> RE: Cellpro 4s Balancing Charger (8/21/2006 5:21:48 AM)

i just ordered 10 pig tale connectors for 26 shipped. from horizon

max-nix -> RE: Cellpro 4s Balancing Charger (8/21/2006 3:34:20 PM)

Thanks for the reply
I emailed Horizon concerning the pricing of the pigtail.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello
I have a question about the pricing on the FMA Cellpro Node Connectorshown on
http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdID=FMACPBP7
(@ $19.90)
FMA Direct has the same item priced as $1.99
http://www.fmadirect.com/products.htm?cat=45&nid=4

This may to be a typo pricing error as a 1000% markup
seems excessive by anything but Gov. standards,

I will let you know if any action is taken by Horizon Hobbies.
I hope they did not bill you at the $19.90 price!

qban_flyer -> RE: Cellpro 4s Balancing Charger (8/21/2006 11:07:19 PM)

Wandering zero added by mistake?[&o]

I went and picked up two more Cellpro 4S chargers from FMA in person in addition to six additional battery packs. I needed three of the $1.99 pigtails, unfortunately they are not in stock and won't until the end of the week. So I'll have to make do without my pigtails until sometime next week.[:o]

rumplestilskin -> RE: Cellpro 4s Balancing Charger (8/22/2006 4:56:12 AM)

dude its 10 connectors for $20 bucks
i called them to check.

max-nix -> RE: Cellpro 4s Balancing Charger (8/24/2006 12:06:13 AM)

Yes, as rumple so eloquently pointed out, the $19.90 price is for a pkg of 10 pigtails.

I finally received this answer From Horizon

"The reason ours cost more is because we sell them as a package of 10 and FMA sells them at $1.99 each. I apologize for the confusion. Thank you for your inquiry."

However their website has not yet been updated to clear up this confusion.

jim-mason -> RE: Cellpro 4s Balancing Charger (8/26/2006 2:17:46 AM)

If you want to make your own pig tails. here are the part numbers from Digi-Key Corp:

455-1489-nd , CONN Housing PA 2 MM White, ($0.95 ea.)
455-1325-1-nd , Conn TERM PHD CRIMP 22-26AWG Tin, ($3.57 for 100 contacts)

You can also order a mating connector:
455-1519-nd, Conn Header PA 5POS, ($0.24 ea.)

You won't save a lot of money but you can usually get the parts in a few days.
There is a $5.00 handling charge for small orders
You will also need a crimping tool and wire

Digi-Key is at : digikey.com, order #: 1-800-344-4539

rumplestilskin -> RE: Cellpro 4s Balancing Charger (8/31/2006 4:58:09 AM)

any news on the storage charge option?

Fred Marks -> RE: Cellpro 4s Balancing Charger (8/31/2006 5:41:00 PM)

rump

THe CP can now be used to set a pack for storage. Run the pack to cut-off using your ESC or theCellpro DPM so you know it is at some 3v/cell. Then put it on CP4S and keep an eye on the display. When the pack reaches 3.8V/cell, unplug it and place in storage. This is the beauty of having the digital display. While you are at it, check to see that cell voltages stay in balance when not tken to full charge to see if there are any incipient cell failure issues. The diagnostics that can be done with CellPro are fantastic.

teamscalepilot -> RE: Cellpro 4s Balancing Charger (9/1/2006 4:35:02 PM)

Just started using the Cellpro what a GREAT piece of equipment. nice to see what each cell is doing at a push of a button. Did I say GREAT!!!!!!! David Pinegar

rumplestilskin -> RE: Cellpro 4s Balancing Charger (9/2/2006 12:07:32 AM)

yes thank you. i just thought that it would be easy to add that little nicety to the charger without much of a fuss . than those of us that purchased the PC cable would have something to play with .heck u just might sell a bunch of PC cables if it was down loadable

jb86 -> RE: Cellpro 4s Balancing Charger (10/7/2006 3:51:23 AM)

greg,
i have three thunder power pro lite 2100 3s for my extreme flight extra 300. i have considered getting a thunder power cell balancer (there has been alot of talk of it on the extreme flight extra 300 thread). but their balancer brings cells to balance in a discharge. i have read everything on this thread and the website of the 4s and the dpm. tell me this, is it just as important to balance on the discharge as the charge cycle. i can see advantage to both systems, but i would definitely choose the 4s first. i'm considering purchasing a thunder power discharge balancer for occasionally discharging, am i right here? also, the adapter cp tp-pq is that the safest way to connect my thunder power verses replacing pig tails?

Hi,

I have a CellPro4S with home made balancer leads. It's a brilliant charger, especially for the price! It's so sophisticated yet simple, cool, safe and confidence inspiring. Confidence inspiring enough to charge in-situ using an extension balance lead (now available to purchase ready made I think).

Of course a backlit display would be nice those over 40, and worth a few extra bucks of my money.

One tiny warning. It may be advertised as suitable for 10-16V input. Take that with a small pich of salt. It really means use a nominal 12V power supply or a 6 cell lead acid battery (13.8V). Overvoltage input protection may well occur just below 16V (mine is around 15.9V). So it won't work on a 16V supply. In fact, thanks to supply ripple and spec tolerances, it won;t work with my neat little ubiquitous 15V 60W switch mode (laptop) supply. Better stick to nominal 12V input...

BB.

I charge my packs in a brightly lit room. Even at my age I have no issues with the Cellpro 4S LCD display, it is just as easy to view as those of my other three chargers. I also have an inexpensive penlight that I use when working on my PCs within reach if needed.[:D]

P-40LUVR -> RE: Cellpro 4s Balancing Charger (11/7/2006 4:57:06 PM)

Will a cellpro charger charge this battery,Im using an Align cheapy square orange charger($9.95 one)at this time but it only charges @0.8 amps and takes over 2 hours to get my Trex done.
The battery is an 1800mah 3 cell.It has 4 wires on the balancing plug as you can see.

It certainly will, and you'll love it. You need a decent 12V 3A power supply or battery. You will either need the adaptor sold separately or you can make an adaptor/extension lead like I did for my 3e packs. The CellPro4s has a different 5 pin conector to cover up to 4 cell packs, hence the need for a lead or adaptor.

Yes it will; those balancing plugs are pretty common across the cheap battery pack brands. You will need one of the CellPro pigtails, and will either need to replace the existing balancing plug or do what I did and use the pigtail to make an adapter, assuming you have or can get the matching socket for that plug or cut the one off the Align charger and rewire it to the pigtail. That way you won't need a CellPro pigtail for each new battery pack.

qban_flyer -> RE: Cellpro 4s Balancing Charger (11/7/2006 5:10:30 PM)

As long as your balancing node connector matches the one on the Cellpro 4S you can.

If not you'll have to find an adapter to allow you to mate to the pack on one end and to the Cellpro 4S on the other one, making sure the wiring sequence is exactly the same on both ends.[;)]

BTW, you will be pleasantly surprised as to how much more power your pack will deliver. A balanced pack gives you more bang for your buck than an unbalanced one.[:)]

P-40LUVR -> RE: Cellpro 4s Balancing Charger (11/7/2006 6:00:40 PM)

Which adapter do I need?[8|](part number)
Im sure there are MANY batterys out there with this type of balancing plug on them..I sure hope FMA has a plug to adapt to their charger..I hate to have to cut ,splice..solder and all.[&o]
Thanks for you're suggestions!

s3tbolt -> RE: Cellpro 4s Balancing Charger (11/7/2006 6:04:34 PM)

With the proper basic supplies and tools I've had great success modifing packs to work with my CellPro Charger. All you need is the FMA pig tail, mylar electrical tape, new shrink tube, electronic solder iron, solder, heat gun, proper hand tools and fire extinguisher. No joke about a fire extingusher! LiPo's put out a lot of amperage and are in a foil wrap, you are working with solder iron, just be careful!

Fred Marks -> RE: Cellpro 4s Balancing Charger (11/7/2006 6:12:01 PM)

The FMA adapters are compatible with some 92% of Li Po packs in the field per
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showpost.php?p=6327387&postcount=13
By using the CellPro pigtails, you can achieve 100% compatibility.

It is not posible to tell from the photo that the plastic body of the connector you show will mate with the cellPro. However, we are seeing many sugggestions either to cut the tap lead (one at a time, please) and splice a CellPro tap connector
http://www.fmadirect.com/detail.htm?item=2121§ion=45
or slip out the pins from the tap connector on your pack , do likewise on the FMA pigtail, and then slip the pins from your tap cable into the cellPro connector body. http://www.fmadirect.com/support_docs/item_1214.pdf
