Well I am NOW charging my TP 2070 at 1.4C! This charger ROCKS as the 1.4C charge rate saves me 10-15 minutes per battery. Interesting thing to watch is the actual charge rate on the cellpro; it ramps up and down to find the max charge rate. All 1.4C changes is the possibility that you can charge faster, it doesn't force the charge rate to 1.4C.

Mine smoked
Just received my CellPro 4s yesterday, had it 2 hours, plugged it in and poof!!, a small puff of smoke and that awful smell of electrical burnt components. I already sent it in for replacement. Called FMA asked about the refund of 7.00 to ship it to them, no deal, stuck with paying 7.00. So far 65.00 for charger, 8.00 shipping 1st time, and another 7.00 shipping--not fair.
Should of gave me a credit or something----anybody have any pull with FMA?
:-)

Additional: Would of liked free return shipping during the first 30 days, after that would pay return shipping.

Yes ... you will need the "Cellpro-to-Great Planes ElectriFly "Power Series" " adapter, found here: http://www.fmadirect.com/Detail.htm?item=2196§ion=45 ... the same adapter also works with LiPower Lites, EFlite, ParkZone, DualSky, Align and probably other manufacturers.

Can anyone tell me if I could use the FMA cellpro just hooked up to my car battery as a DC source. Is buying a dedicated power source really necessary?

If I must get a power supply, would this work:

I use my Cellpro with a "start" pack. You know, the pack sold as an emergency starter for your car. I charge outside and this allows me to do it without running extension cords as I also have a dedicated power supply. Just be sure it's fully charged before using it. A car battery would be fine. Stay with it during the charge.

Yes, the link to tower hobbies does show a suitable power supply. You may want to put connectors on the end of the power supply leads and charger leads. I used Anderson Powerpoles for this.

Although a car battery would work fine with the CellPro, it is probably not the most practical power source. A car battery is designed to deliver high current over short period of times, not low current over a long period of time. Using it all day long to charge your LIPOs could prove to be destructive over the course of the summer.

At home, I use a regulated variable output power supply for all my 12V DC: Alinco DM 330MV needs http://www.alinco.com/Products/DM330MVE I have also seen modified computer power supplies with banana plug terminals. http://www.wikihow.com/Convert-a-Computer-ATX-Power-Supply-to-a-Lab-Power-Supply

In the field I use a 80Ah deep cycle battery, which I charge about once every 3 weeks using an 10 Ah automotive charger.

I use an automotive jumpstarter with a 20 AH batt. out at the field too. it also has a built in inverter that I use for a hot glue gun. It will charge steady all day but the biggest batt. I charge is 1800 MAH, most are 1320. It has two lighter outlets to run two chargers, the cellpro and a Triton. When I get home I charge the jumpstarter with the Triton.

Thanks to some inspiration on another forum I hacked together a quick 'terminal box' which powers from a toshiba laptop ac/dc brick. The power supply says it puts out 15v at 2.7amps which is lower amps than I would prefer but it gets the job done thus far.

See the pics here: http://i.ndustrio.us/2007/04/20/an-indoor-ac-solution-for-a-12-volt-lipo-charger/

I use a 35AH Lead acid, no problem. It will charge the battery several times without effecting the output voltage. High crank amp batteries do work fine for slow drain, they run the glove box light, and your car radio fine.... not sure why someone would be concerned about that. Actually typically a DC battery source, is more stable then a cheap AC to DC converter. The more stable the power, the more stable the charger will run... An AC/DC converter with enough amps will set you back a bit.

I cut the alligator clips right off, and soldered on a male 4-pin nuetrik XLR connecter, and then made a few different connectors, Alligators to four pin, AC/DC to four pin. I even got a motor cycle 18AH battery, and soldered a 4pin directly to that, I can easy carry that to the field. Charger works fine with all of them.

You can do a lot better than Tower for good power supplies. Here are three on line sources at good prices.
