Keep it going Kelsey! This build is going to have some slow spots, mostly just the wing and mainly the flaps! So get through this and you'll have no problems with the rest of it.

On my flaps I went with a metal pin on the outer flaps, let me know how your set up works though, not sure if it's easier.

Here are some pictures for inspiration. I always cover the wing first then I cover the control surfaces after a final test fitting. This always insures a nice tight fit and smooth operation.

Dion,

That is truly amazing. Mine is simply not going to look that good.

The problem I'm struggling with is that I can't test the flap operation with the Robart hinges fitting loosely into the holes. So I decided to cover the flaps and TE of the wing, and epoxy the hinges on. Then I can install the servo and push rods. But this is a one shot deal. I have to make sure the webs stick out far enough, and that they have enough travel to let the flaps move. I'm conecerned when glued, something is not going to work.'

I will try your method for the next go around. I like the idea that your flaps can be installed, tested, and removed for finishing.

You have defintely set the bar as to what a model corsair should look like.

Looks there are some varying, strong opinions on the golden rod. I just wanted to simplify things and get rid of some of the hardware. I have already tried multiple servos on every surface, now I'm trying something new. Its gets pretty warm here in the summer, so well see what happens with thermal expansion. I do not plan to use the goldnrod anywhere else.

Here is a drawing showing my plans for flap hinges. There is a reason I want the pivot below the flaps, and that will become clear later.

Do you think "The Master" Dion would consider this scale?

Probably not. But that's not the reason for this hinging technique.

I would like to comment on the Golden Rod issue. I've never had a problem with them in the heat, the stuff that has given me a problem was the Great Planes plastic copies of the Golden Rod. I build the GP F-4 and used the supplied pushrod for the nose wheel steering, the inner pushrod material is made of a softer plastic and it would expand and contract huge amounts. I was constantly adjusting the nose wheel for every take off! I changed it out for some of the same type of pushrod that was made of carbon fiber, never had a problem after.

On my Corsair wings I use a longer metal rod on the wingtip bell-crank side, this keeps the amount of Golden rod used very small, mainly used at the bend in the wing. But again I have not had the problems with this brand that I did with the GP brand nyrod.

Those hinges look very scale to me kelsey, very similar to mine!

Time for an update.

Here you see a piece of 1/64 ply to cover the hinge gap. I sanded the balsa for the ply to fit in. When covered, you won't see it.

I'm also showing where I epoxied part of a control horn into the LE of the flaps.

The following show the flaps epoxied into place, and being operated by the servo. The operate very smoothly.

The last shows the linkage. The rod from the bell crank to the servo looks like crap, and it will be replaced. It worked well enough to shoot some photos.

Luke,

If you check in again, please shoot me an email. I have three Royal kits I would like to purchase accessories for.

The mods to your Corsair are coming along very nicely, those flaps look great! Keep the momentum going, I want to see her finished!

I'm glad this is a pretty basic build. I have seen several things I could improve on.

The next one gets more realistic hinging, retractable gear with doors. I'm number 5 on Lee's list for a set of mains.

The reason I located the hinges below the flaps was to get them away from the push rod. It helps the servo a little to space these apart.

I'm a little surprised that more people have not asked for the drawings. These kits sell for 400.00 on ebay, and I have had two people ask for my drawing files. I will email them to anyone that wants to try this. I also have the instructions scanned and can email those. Plans are available on ebay.

Hi KELSEY,I got your files, opened up now.I think those are very workable(nice).I think I`ll "PUMP`EM UP"for a larger(80"plus),and ,maybe even, "SHRINK`EM DOWN",(40"??) sized planes.I`ll most likely build @ a 60 size too.I won`t be doing anything with them for a while, because I got my, Top Flite 60, F4U-5,to finish up first.I`m still watching, your progress.

The war birds do make for a chalenge Change what you think nessesary and go from there. I am sheeting the P51 and find a lot of things I want to change before I finish it.
Edit
I am building the TF gold 1/7 P51. They use plastic not balsa for some parts that make detail cowl and raditor

Thanks Dave. I put this plane on the computer so I would have a permanent record of it. I also wanted to share the files so other people would have the opportunity to build this plane. I'm sure the Topflite canopy would work, and aftermarket cowls are still available, but who knows for how long.

Actually RC OUTLAW, when I mentioned improvements, I was referring to my building skills. I have made some building goofs, and I have not planked before. The gull section is rough and needs puttying and sanding. I did locate an article on model airplane news that shows how to plank. I should be better since I understand the procedure. I can post the link if anyone wants to read it.

I need to pick up the pace. I got bogged down on the left flaps because I had concerns they wouldn't work. Since they work well, it shouldn't take long to get the right set installed. Then I can finish sheeting and move to the fuselage.

If its a complete kit in good condition, I would jump on it. They are getting harder to find everyday. There is one on ebay right now, but its been several weeks since I have seen one listed. It basically boils down to how bad do you want it.

Hi keith,

Your build is looking great. I would greatly appreciate a set of the digitized drawings. Your offer is very generous.

I have a .60 Royal Corsair waiting for me. It is a kit I inherited from my father about 2 1/2 years ago. The last call I had with my Dad I was telling him how I wanted to get into the hobby. We had a great time talking about the old Royal kits, and he told me about Nick Ziroli's website. It was a good last conversation and a big reason I finally committed to get into the hobby. Unfortunately, I will be needing to cut a lot of new wood for the Corsair, the years have taken their toll. Your drawings would be very helpful.

Thanks
Scott

Well, I recieved the plans that I bought through Ebay. This is a much better looking plane than the TF for sure! I'll be poring over these build threads for the forseeable future!

Kelsey,

Thanks for the drawings..... I am actually contemplating shrinking them to about a 36" wing and making an electric one in the future.

Hello all. got a little frustrated and had a hard time finishing the flaps. I can't say I'm thrilled with how they turned out, but both sides are finished along with all the push rods.

Here's a few pics showing flaps in lowered and raised positions, and the push rods.

I'm finally over this hurdle and can continue with sheeting.

How does this look?

Time for an update.

The sheeting is finished!

My strip planking abilities suck, so the gull area was not very good. After I tried some hand sanding, it was ever worse. Lots of bumps, high and low spots. I covered the area in hobico balsa filler. This time I wraped some coarse sand paper around a medium size plastic glass. I simply worked the glass from side to side. The result was smooth uniform surface. Just a little trick that helped me out.

All that's left is to glue the LE pcs, wing tips, and the pcs that form the wing scoops.

I should finish this weekend. Time to order wood for the fuse.

Hooray!!!!
