I dont think you can design your own airframe. I know you can modify anything and everything on a model that is already on the program though. I've made MANY changes to anything that will 3D at all. thicker wings, wider wing roots, more aileron percentage, It is virtually endless when it comes to modifing an existing airframe! its great!

I think with the latest .426 beta update there is now the capability to import files of type .g3x ... I think the question is how do we build these new models ready for import. I too would be interested to hear how that would work.

At the moment you need to have a 3d software package called AutoDesk 3DS Max to create new 3D representations of planes/helicopters which are then imported into G3 (this import feature is what’s been added to the latest version of G3). Unfortunately this software costs $3500! (The company I work for paid for the one I use) Knife Edge as far as I know are trying to work out a solution that uses a free 3d software package called GMAX. Just to make it clear if you want to create completely new visual representations of planes/helicopters you will need another piece of software. It goes like this ...

1. create a new plane in 3DS MAX
2. export the plane from 3DS MAX as .KEX file (using the exporter provided by KE)
3. import the .KEX file into RealFlight G3 (.426)
4. define the flight characteristics using the G3 aircraft editor
5. export the new plane for sharing as a .G3X file

Nemo,
In another life I used to play at ray-tracing and 3D modeling (but not for planes). There are a number of good packages available for that task which are free ... such as Wings3D and others. Can any of those be used with a suitable data format convertor?

How does the drawn model relate to the physics? For example, can I create a cube and attach an engine to it and try and fly it?

Any program that can export in .3ds would work, you would just have to model it, then export it, and beg someone like nemo to get it in the game for you

If I model a plane in a graphics tool, what is needed to beg my friends like nemo to 'get it in the game for me'? What am I missing? Is there some additional tool (maybe the airplane editor?) that is not generally available?
