Hi guys

I’m new to r/c also. Started flying this spring (2003), so the other guys know a lot more about it then me but here’s my input. My second plane is the GP 182. (Actually second and third, totaled the first , but that was because of trying a maneuver to low to the ground. My third plane is the H9 T-34 ARF. Had a few problems putting it together and maybe had it a bit underpowered (had a OS. 46 LA). To me it seems very easy to fly does nice aerobatics lands easy (just keep the speed up over a trainer) and looks good. Still being tricycle gear helps if you never flew tail dragger. I feel it easier to fly then my Cessna 182, which was “advertised” as a good second plane. I have to add I did crash it (the T-34) badly but I had an engine problem and turned final why to steep. Building another one putting in an O. S. .46 FX this time. Also you may want to ask someone at you field who has seen you fly and get their input. See the thread in “ARF”, “H-9 T-34 What a pile of crap” for full details on some of the problems with the kit and decide for yourself, I love flying it. Good Luck!

If you plan on getting a warbird eventually go ahead and get it now. Unless your getting an RTF, buy the thing and build it over the winter (something to do). Anyway thats what i would do. If your interested in warbirds then they are just as fun to build as flying them. If your really rich, get some retracts and an engine and mount it so when the time comes she's all set. Or you can basically build most of the airplane in anticipation. But i agree that it should not be your second plane. Try a cheap little low wing sport plane, or even a cheap warbird if you can find one. Im sure you can get a warbird for about $100 with permanent lading gear for a .40-.46 engine, which is what im asuming you used in your trainer. Anyway thats my thoughts.

When should you get a Warbird????? When your heart flutters when you see a Mustang, BF109, Corsair, or hear the roar of a P&W 2800 flying overhead. Your temperature rises a bit, and you seek out the closest airshow and end up taking hundreds of pictures of those planes that were once flown by nineteen and twenty year olds more than two generations ago.

You should get a warbird when you want that feel of bonding with that generation. When you want a plane that says "Power" and is a challenge to fly, yet gives you great satisfaction when you know that you've built it yourself, and then successfully have flown it because you've taken the advice of those who have previously joined the ranks of a warbird pilot.

I began with a calmato high wing, and one month into it I flew the seagull pt-19.
Of course I thrashed the landings quite a bit but never really caused REAL damage.
THen I moved on to a kyosho mustang which basically floated down the runway.
It was a rough ride with them and I ended up getting the kyosho tiger moth and the piper cub.
What's funny is the fact that I think I really learned to land with these planes.
after that everything was downhill. Now I fly everything from Gee Bee's to 1.50 texans.
Right now I'm flying the Dago Red Mustang most of the time and I really have to say...
Get into warbirds after you MASTER the landings on a low wing sports plane such as a cap232 or and extra.
and practice coming in hot because you need to learn how to FLY it in. Not float it in like you would with trainers or even some so called warbirds like kyosho's.

If you want a warbird that flies like a sport plane,

Pick one of the Hangar 9 ARF warbirds.

I have flown both the H9 F4U and the H9 P40 and they had very docile flight qualities.

I would say they handle as a low wing sport aerobatic plane that should be good for your

third plane, once you have mastered the basics of flying and landing with the plane intact.

Get a Warbird whenever you want. But don't fly it for your first airplane! Build for the future.....and have fun adding all the details.

Get a low wing tail dragger kit. Learn to build so that you can repair. Learn to build light so that your planes will fly better. Learn to build from plans so that you can build whatever you like.

Finally I have entered large warbird building and flying. My 30 pound Wildcat is easy to fly but easy to screw up and I have. Let it get slow and it will cause a 3 month repair.

Fly the wings off the trainer. Make sure you can make a dead stick landing from anywhere (it can come in very handy). Do the same for the tail dragger. Practice slow flight and stalls. Make the plane heavier to get practice with higher wing loads.

Most important have fun and patience.

My second airplane was a warbird, if you consider WW1 planes. It is a Balsa USA Eindecker .40 with a .52 four stroke. Extremely easy to fly. Better flyer than my Kadet trainer, thats for sure. Anyone who can fly a trainer, can fly it and look good. A Thunder Tiger Lazy tiger p-51 is ok for a second plane as well, but it don't look any to scale.
