Ok everybody, here goes a totally new endeavor for me. I have just recently finished my first 1/12 scale Warbird design. To the best of my knowledge, one has never been done in this scale before. I love unique WWII Warbirds so the Defiant made the top of my list. Step one was importing and scaling a 3-view drawing into the CAD system. Then many many hours later of CAD work, I printed my first plan. This was a challenge in itself. I don't have a plotter so my plan is made up of lots of 8 1/2" x 11" sheets! I will find someone to print full size drawings in the future. Then I decided to have the plane laser cut. The laser cutting was done by Gunderson AeroDesign. The parts are cut extremely well, and are very accurate (too accurate! More on that later.) I would highly recommend this company, as the customer service is fantastic and your parts are one email, and one paypal transaction away. Click here for more about them.

Here are the planes specs.

Wing Span: 39 3/4"
Wing Area: 256 sq/in.
Engine: .15-.25 two stroke
Weight: TBD

Here is a plan picture.

Here is some pictures of the laser cut parts. Next I labeled all the parts to make sure none where accedentally missed by the laser cutter. All were present and the build may begin!

The plane has strong 1/4" x 1/4" fuselage stringers to try and minimize any tendecies to twist when the sheeting is eventually added. First I pinned down these stringers to the board. Ok hang-up #1. There are a few formers that are slightly inaccurate. This is the beauty of laser cutting your parts. It really helps to find even small errors in your CAD drawing. These formers will have to be made slightly wider, and the drawing updated. I will keep you posted as I go.

For some of you scratching your heads wondering what in the heck a Boulton Paul Defiant is, I thought I would post a pic. And because this is a prototype build, why not post a picture of the original prototype?

Some of the combat guys have been useing the Paul-Defiant for the past four years in the 2610 class. It wasn't a good fit in the original combat class, 1/12 scale being a large underpowered A/C. But the call for a larger [10%] A/C in the new rules fit the bill !
Sorry to burst your bubble on the first of this size thing.

My bubble isn't burst. Thats ok. I would like to see a picture of one of the planes you are talking about! This plane isn't really intended for Combat. I suppose it could be used for that, but I know little to nothing about RC Combat, so the design intent was just a small simple Warbird. It may serve as a good plane for electric conversion as well. I will try and make some more progress soon.
