Status: online 		Did you guys locate the engine on the center line of the fuselage? I'm replacing the Spehar engine that came with the plane with a DL50 and noticed the builder didn't get it center and was using several washers apparently to center the shaft on the cowl.

Status: offline 		I always put about 2 degrees of right thrust in my engine therefore, the engine needs to be moved a little to the left so the prop comes out in the center of the cowl.

Status: offline 		Chuck I put right thrust in both of my Waco's as well. Like Ken said the engine will sit to the left side of the firewall to center the prop shaft in the cowling. Just make sure to maintain the prop clearance on the cowling. I think I had to make a ply spacer ring for the stand-offs on my DL50 to mount too.

I don't use right or down thrust. The 27% that is on the drafting table will have none either. There is a left hand stick for something other than the throttle. Use the Rudder.

I'm in the process of hooking up the ailerons and read your post showing the ball links you used for attaching the struts between the ailerons. How are the ball links holding up from the repeated assembly/disassembly? Are they the 4-40 size?

Mike if you set up differential aileron (more up than down) throw you will find that the Waco will do really nice axial rolls. Of course it takes two different linked channels to do this.

I've been experimenting with this tail wheel set-up with no luck. I've been unable to get it welded or brazed. What type of tubing did you use and what type of weld? Do you do any contract work if you had all the parts cut and fitted. Thanks. Tim

Hi Tim,

From your description I don't know what you are unable to get welded or brazed or what parts you are using. I used this item from Robart: http://www.robart.com/products/15-scale-mechanical-retractable-tail-wheel as the starting point. I used 4130 alloy steel tubing with a 5/32" ID. You could probably get away with brass tubing. However, you must use high temperature nickel-silver solder with the proper flux and not the low temperature hobby shop silver solder. A propane torch will work for soldering. I don't do any contract work. Good luck.

Status: offline 		Big Bird I am planning onstarting this project also. I think I saw your WACO at bomber field several years ago and what a plane! You did a great job. I know all the HA's with these plans but I still want to tackle this project. Do you still have the templates for the struts and did ya'll draw the wing tibs more to scale. If you have still have these could you email them to me. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have a 1/5 NIB PICA kit that I am going to start also.

Status: offline 		Ken, I hope you are still looking at this thread. My fuselage is framed and the gear is being installed. My tail wheel came out great and I'm still trying to plan out where all the electronics will go with some access. I was reviewing the thread looking for pictures of the aluminum strut attach fittings that you installed in the wings. All I could find was the fitting drawings for the cabane and wing struts. Did you use the same fittings in the wings. The dual attach fittings look like the angles are different. My only other question is how is your Waco holding up? Is their something you would suggest doing differently? The plans are a challenge but the thread has sure been a help. I think I can have it done by summer. If it comes together, I'd certainly apply for brotherhood. Tim

Status: offline 		I followed Ken's method (shown above) for the struts and it worked out well. Have not flown much myself. Hope to get with it this spring. Waco is still in basement. It has not flown yet. All I did was fire it up and cruise around yard at home. It wanted to fly.

Status: offline 		Ken,. Thanks for putting all those shots on one post. I've fabricated the aluminum ends for the struts. Was there a drawing showing the aluminum fittings that are secured into the wing structures? They do look similar to the strut ends except for the fittings where the guy wires are attached. If this still isn't clear then I'll use the pictures as my guide. Great shots thanks. I'll take a few pictures as things progress. Tim

Status: offline 		Ken, I wanted to thank a number of contributors to this forum for all their great ideas and tips in building the Pepino Waco. Yourself along with stickbuilder, Damifino and waconut all made this build alot of fun. At this point, I'm sure you are saying this guy is nuts. If it wasn't for the forum the build would not have been the same. It took me about 10 months to complete and I still have to balance, add the aileron connections and clean things up. I'm hoping to fly in early October. The model should weigh in at about 30 pounds. Up front is a Brison 3.2 swinging a 22x8 prop. There is a smoke system installed along with working nav and landing lights that are synched to the throttle. The aileron corrigations were a major issue. After months of searching I could find no supplier for the plastic corrigations that were 1/4 scale. I finally settled on a pattern that gave me a few more ribs but at least the look is there. Don't you know after it's all said and done I find a supplier for the exact scale I wanted. The site is "Park Flyers Plastics" for anyone interested. Since so many great pictures were already posted of your build and others I really just wanted to show some of my finished product. I have not asked for the brotherhood information but plan to after my maiden. This airplane came out great. The forward passenger is removeable and I can mount a camera in it's place. Hopefully getting a video up after a few flights. I really just wanted to add to the forum so that waco modelers might get the bug. Thanks again for all the ideas from you gents. Maybe I'll make it to a Bomber Field meet. Tim

Status: offline 		My Pepino Waco resides in the Waco Museum in Troy Ohio at the site of the old factory. I donated it back in the spring.

My 33% Waco went in due to a stupid mistake on landing on my part. I made several errors on landing starting with getting too slow. Took a hard bounce on the runway then tip stalled in. The fuse needs a total rebuild.

I hope to have my 33% rebuilt and ready for flying by spring.

I've got a 1/4 scale YMF-5 kit I'm pretty sure that it's the Pepino kit plans. My question here is.
Does anyone know if the new? DLE 60cc twin cyl engine will fit withou cutting big ugly holes in the cowl?
I just heard back from AMR and they tell me that the engine is 10 1/4" from spark plug boot to spark plug boot.
In the picture of the engine the spark plugs look straight across from each other. Wonder if the engine could be rotated so the plug boots get a little extra clearance in the cowl bumps.

Status: offline 		RBell, I measured the cowl on my Pepino and it's pretty much 10 1/4" max. The blisters are solid resin so it will take alot of carving to gain very little room. My Brison 3.2 has a side mounted muffler that gives it about 1/4 inch clearance inside the cowl. If you have the mufflers, measure the radius, I would say a maximum of 5 inch radius or 10 inch diameter if your trying to keep everything inside the cowl.

I haven't started building it yet. I have a Fuji 64 that was going to go in a Ziroli F4U Corsair. A Zenoah GT-80 has been purchased for the Corsair. So I was thinking that the Fuji might end up in the YMF-5 Then I discovered the DLE 60cc twin. If it was to fit inside the cowl without having to cut big ugly holes then the Fuji  might just get earmarked for some other future project.
