Ken,
How did you handle the aileron's, did you cover them before adding the panels of just seal the wood? I was thinking about just covering the L/E and then seal the wood and glue the panels on. Also what glue did you use to glue them on?
Later!!
Anthony

I covered the leading edge with polyester overlapping the top and bottom surfaces about 1/4". Same with the inboard end. On the trailing edge I cut a strip about 5/8" wide and tacked it to the top and bottom surface at the inboard end. While pulling it tight along the trailing edge I ironed it down alternating from one side to another. The strip was folded as I did this. This left a sizable area of bare wood on both sides. I put a couple of coats of Polycrylic on the full aileron.

A paper pattern was made before I cut out the corrugated plastic. I used a new single edge blade to cut the traced pencil marks on the back side of the plastic. Of course I had to make cutouts in the plastic for the horn and inter-aileron link.

When I was satisfied with the plastic fit, I used some small clamps to hold it on the aileron. Then I lifted one end of the plastic and applied medium CA to the aileron on the inboard end for about 4" of it's length. Just a simple overlapping S pattern was used. After laying the plastic down I was able to remove the clamps and complete the process in 4" lengths.

Several pages back I showed how to extend the length of the corrugated plastic.

I was able to get a decent pic of the rib stitching by turning off the flash and holding it in the light just right. I think once it is covered with the rib tape and everyting is blended in with a coats of PolyC it should have the correct subtle look of the full scale. I have the bottom wing rib stitching complete.

Guys,

Thanks for the collective wisdom. I'm going to fix the incidence error. Just eyeballing, maybe 6 inches from wing joiner to dowel. If off by one degree...6 TAN 1 degree equals abourt 0.100 inch. If I relocate the dowel hole and make sure the joiner doesn't prevent rotation (and put a minor twist into it if it does), it's taken care of. Better now than to wonder why it climbs so funny later.

I didn't want you guys to think I had been slacking off. When I shot the aluminum on, it disclosed too many gotchas. So back to the filler and primer. It's almost ready for white paint. One more minor inspection.

Here is a photo of my grandson Nicholas. He's my chief helper.

Very nice,
The Waco is looking good and it looks like you have some fine help there. I just became a grandpa 7 months ago and I am already enjoying spoiling the little fella.
Here is a pic of my grandson, don't think I will let him get close to my Waco for a few years Poor little guy is teething and a bit fussy but he will still smile for grandpa.

Your grandson already has those pilot looks. Nicholas is very good around the airplanes. I'm going to try to get him on the buddy box sometime this summer.

I bought this at Lowes today for sanding primer. So far, it is the best that I've used. No clog and easily shakes out. It's a bit pricey ($8 for 2 pads) but seems to be well worth it. I'll let you know how it is for longevity.

I also use sanding sponges, they do a really nice job for the finish sanding.

Anthony, I'm getting ready to carve the head rest fairing that goes back to the vertical stab. By the way, what is that thing called?

What I need to know is how wide it is at the headrest and how tall it is there. Did you glue yours on before covering? Here is a photo of the stab fin. It doesn't look quiet right to me. How would you modify it?

The fake stitching sure looked good.

Ken, I think it would be the turtledeck, maybe. I am going to terminate the rear end of the turtledeck with the leading edge of the vertical fin and blend them together. I think this is how it's done. Anthony may have other ideas.
Also, I think I have the correct dimensions of the headrest at home if you need them. John provided the full scale dimensions somewhere on the other thread and I just divided it by four.

Scott you may be right. I usually think of the turtle deck as larger and more rounded. I need the dimensions. I also need to re-sculpt the front of the vertical stab and recover part of it. Any help is appreciated.
