You sure are right about the weight adding up. Way back in the beginning of this thread I talked about the fuselage that a friend gave me just as I was beginning to build mine. He had built it strictly by the plans before he discontinued the project. It was all spruce. No need in the world for spruce stringers and spruce longerons behind the cockpit. I built mine with basswood longerons from the firewall to just behind the cockpit. There is a little more basswood at the wing saddles and of course plywood for the gear mount. Most all the rest is balsa.

I built the wings as one piece to save the weight of joiners. It is amazing how stiff and light the fuselage is with all that balsa. Pepino was very old school in his way of thinking. Back in the early 80s the thought was that gasoline powered airplanes needed to be built of spruce or they would shake apart. There was a local company in those days by the name of EWH. They converted Homelite engines for RC use. They also sold a kit called a Puma. It was a very heavy plane. Their engine would get it up but nothing was left for performance.

Have you taken a look at planes built by Troy Built, Cardin, and other modern aerobatic airplanes? The basic structure is lite ply with lots of lightening holes and yet, they are hauled around with powerful twins. I'm sure that I missed a lot of places to lighten mine up but I tried pretty hard. You mentioned the 1/4" landing gear. I sure don't think that is a place to scrimp on strength.

Hold my soap box while I climb down.

Hi Guys,
It took me alot longer than I thought to put the rib and reinforcement tape on the wings. I found that it worked better to iron the tape down over each stitch, unfortunately my covering iron gave up the ghost and to my wifes dismay I had to finish the job with her clothes iron . It looks like It will be next weekend before I finish up with the PolyC.
Here is a pic of the rib stitches after I used the iron around the stitch.
Later!

I recieved news this morning that one of club members was seriously injured on Thursday by his turbine helicopter (rc of course). He lost several fingers on his left hand, and had a severe cut on his right arm. I am not sure exactly what happened, but can only imagine that it was not a pretty scene at the field. After having surgery, he is recovering in the local hospital. This man is an experienced pilot with turbine powered aircraft, but it stands to reason that you should always be careful when dealing with model aircraft of any kind.

Scott, when you find out what happened let us know. Sure sorry it happened.

Saw an unusual thing happen yesterday at the big bird flyin that I went to. The rudder hinges pulled out on one of the 40% aerobatic ARFs. When this happened the pull-pull cables unzipped the fuselage like pulling the cord on a bag of Cat Chow. The rudder then flopped around the back of the fuselage. With all that going on he made a nice landing. No pins through the hinges. I guess ARFs don't need them. Right!

Guys,
I got the 10-32 rod ends and decided they are way to big and heavy. I decided to scrap the music wire for upper wing mount and go with formed pieces of 1/8 by 1/2 aluminum. I'll double bolt them to the fuse where the wires would go and bend the upper ends flat. I have the option of putting T nuts in the wing and shimming for alignment. Also thinking of a loose piece that could bolt solidly to the strut and have an adjustment at the wing connection.

I didn't order the aluminum strut material yet. Hope the 1/8 by 1/2 AL. will fit inside.

Michael, the 1/8 by 1/2 aluminum will just fit inside the strut material if you round the corners of the 1/8 by 1/2.

Big Bird,

Thanks. Here's what it might look like. Need to slide the strut matl on from the bottom due to the bends at top. Tight fit I'm guessing.

HI Guys,
I haven't given up, been very busy at work. I have been working on the Waco all day, I have 3 coats of PolyC on the fuse and the wings. I will let that cure this week then primer next weekend. I still need to add the stitching to the tail surfaces and then coat with PolyC.
Later!!
Anthony

Anthony, now that you have used Polycrylic, what is your opinion of it?

I have not been posting very much because I'm only doing the boring work of filling many small imperfections with spotting putty and sanding. The dress lining material is not as thick as Super Coverite and small imperfections in the wood show up more after the primer is put on.

It's also been slower because of going to flyins, lately one every weekend, maintaining the other airplanes, garden, yard, and honey-do list. How did I ever make it before I retired?

I know how you feel it just doesn't seem like you ever get caught up on everything before you have to turn around and start all over again! I keep telling my wife that I am going to buy enough thick gauge plastic and cover the whole yard and cover it with that White gravel that way I can sell the lawn mower. If you don't mind me asking what kind of work did you retire from. I can say one thing for sure it is nice to be retired from the military and receiving that check once a month and now being 70% disabled through the Veterans Admin and receiving my compensation itn't to bad. The VA rep here in town is now in the process of trying to get my classified as IU (individual unemployability) which hopefully will increase my compensation a lot more. It is a pain now to have to live the rest of my life with a messed up back, and the VA is afraid that if they operate on it-it could make it worse than it is.

Oh well what can you do just build more airplanes I guess to keep me busy!!

Ken,
I have used PolyC on a couple planes before for filling the weave of the fabric and I really like it. You really have to let it cure out before sanding or it just smears. I have 5 days off next week and I plan on primering the fuse and getting it ready for panel lines etc: and spray the wings silver. Once I get the fuse lined out I will mount the tail surfaces and get the faired in as well. I am not going to make my July date for having the plane ready to fly for when my friend is in town but oh well, I am not going to rush it.
Later!!
Anthony
