Just in case someone else may build a YMF-5 from Pepino's plans here is a caution. The plans that I received have some pretty serious distortions that came in the copy process. As an example I laid a straight edge down the center line of the top view of the fuselage and found that the tail end of the plane was out of line by a full 1/4". With the straight edge it is very easy to see where the error occurred. The side view was off by a similar amount. I drew new reference lines on the plan which should take care of the problem.

Update photos. The first photo shows the mounting (1/4x20) holes for the lower wing. The small blocks on the top of the wing properly locate the wing. At this point, a little basswood but no spruce. The structure is very light.
I hope to have the plane ready for Bomber Field in September.

Hey Big Bird, have you started to build the outer panels of the wings yet? If so, did you have any trouble with the wing tips, according to the plans? If you have any more photos or suggestions , they would be greatly appreciated. BTW- I solved the whole issue I had with the ZDZ 80 mounting. I traded it for a Saito 300 twin, on ignition. It should be perfect for this plane. Thanks, Scott

No, I haven't started the outer wing panels but I don't think the wing tips will be too much of a challenge. I took one of the wing panels that my friend gave me and finished out one of the wing tips as a pattern for my panel. Here are a couple of photos. The 300 should do fine.
I have made more progress on the fuselage but stopped posting photos because I thought no one was interested besides me. Why waste RCU memory space?

Keep posting pix, I'm interested. In all of the pictures I've seen of the wing tips, it doesn't seem like there is much of a taper on the top of the wing. I've done one so far, and had to rework it to get it to look right. I don't know if it is right but I'll do the other three the same way. You have already built your tail wheel? Wanna make another?Have you seen the thread in Antique and Vintage on the Waco? Scott

A few minutes ago I made a photo of the tip to show the taper. Do you think this looks right? I built my tail wheel assembly from the Robart tail wheel that came out of my crashed Ziroli Corsair. I wouldn't mind building another one but I don't have the critical parts such as the yoke where the wheel mounts, the shock absorber, and the control arm. I'll look that thread up.

Some of the guys on the other thread posted some pix of the wing tips( around page 102 or close) but I'm still not sure. Some look like they are flat all the way across the top with no taper, unless I am looking at it wrong. Yea , the tail wheel is the only thing keeping me from finishing the fuselage, just haven't been motivated enough , yet. How do you braze aluminum?

Scott, my Waco will not be used for scale competition so I guess I'll just make the tips to suite me.
Go over to Google and type in "brazing aluminum". You will get a bunch of sites to look up, most of them want to sell you something but you will find some useful information also.

I sure will Brad when I have something worthwhile to post. I have all of the top and side stringers on and today will start on the bottom formers and stringers. One thing that I keep thinking about is how to do the wing fairings. I've not quiet decided how.

Ken, I'm not sure how to do the wing farings myself but this is what I plan to do. After I cover the fuse with coverite ( if I can find it) I am going to use body filler and sand it to shape , light weight bondo probably. I think that is how the war bird people do it.
