My Waco is still moving ahead slowly. I finally caved in and took the easy route and covered with Ultracote. Red with black and gold trim to follow. I know it doesn't match up to the fabric, but it might hold up to a 10 ft view.

Just saw a 1/3 YMF listed in Buy & Sell for $1300. Is that worth going for at that price? I've heard good things?

I would say go for it, at $1300 that is a good buy, I can honestly say it is an impressive plane. Has the kit been started? I know when I 1st opened mine I was a little intimidated by all the wood, it's not bad once you start building.

My offer was accepted and I sent a check. I have more work on he current one, but it's getting there. Will be gone for entire month of February, so it will be some time before I get going on the big one. Is it as complete as it seems, or do you need to buy more stuff every other day?

You will need to buy wheels and your control connections. If he doesn't have the wheels with the kit I would suggest buying the wheels from AMR. They are very heavy duty and have ball bearings in the hub. I would order the wheels and axles for the wheels at the same time. They have a new and old version of the kit. The new version has been updated to include some extra fiberglass parts. We willhave to see which version of the kit you receive. My kit also has an aluminum main gear and they used to come with a composite gear.
Either way you just bought a very nice impressive kit. You will have a heart attack when you see all the wood

I, too, considered putting a bid in on that kit but it just so happened that my Barth 1/4 scale YMF kit was delivered that very same day. Also, I would not have liked bidding against a WACO "Brother" . Besides, I'm not sure I have room to build, store, and transport a plane of that size. But still, I think someday I'd like to have one. For now I'm sure my 1/4 scale will give me plenty of challenges. Right now I'm just studying the instruction manual, the plans, and all the parts. The quality of everything looks top-notch. I know this is the Pepino thread and I'm getting a bit off topic. I considered building the Pepino version but opted for the Barth kit instead. By the way, for those who might be interested, Scale Plans & Services is up and running again under new ownership. They are distributors for the Pepino plans as well as many other plans and photo packs. The new owner is Henry Budzynski and can be reached at scaleplans@yahoo.com.

Status: offline 		Mike you made the right choice by going with the kit rather than the Pepino Plans, I love the plane but it was a big PITA to build. I know AMR is also working on a 25% Waco as well.
Make sure you post the build of the Barth kit. I am intersted in seeing how it goes together.

Painting over Ultracote. This is probably the wrong spot for this question, but I overheated the Ultracote in some places on the wings and fuse where the covering was wood backed. You know how it shrinks rapidly in open spans and more slowly when the heat goes into the wood too. Now I'm left with some kinda dull looking areas and some shinny. I wonder if it would be possible to clear coat with something like a water based poly to get the uniform gloss back. I was thinking of a couple spray cans. Is this a doable thing? If not, is there something better to use? I'm really dumb when it comes to paint.

I just got a note from Henry Budzynski, the new owner of Scale Plans and Photo Service (formerly owned by Ann Pepino) that he is selling only plans right now. The photo part of the service will take a little longer to get inventoried and organized before they are available.

Some plans will no longer be offered as the rights to sell them have reverted back to the original owner/designer. He is also revising the plans price list and should have that available soon, the complete catalog will take a bit longer.

Mike,

My suggestion would be to try some plastic polish instead of clear coat (paint). If the polish doesn't work for you, then it can still be painted. I know for sure most auto parts will carry it. I have used some to polish out vehicle headlight lenses. Plan to use it on the monokote of one of my planes. Just have not got there yet.

I tried the plastic polish. It looked like an easy fix. Got a deep, mirror shine out of it, but the dull spots were still duller than the rest. I might try a little with buffer. Thanks.

Status: offline 		Slow progress. Getting control cables in. Loud checkerboard on underside of elevator for better visibility. Lots of other places where my intentions of being pretty scale-like are slipping away. But after being such a monster to build, I'm happy to be approaching the end.

Status: offline 		In my post above, one of the side views shows the prop hub sticking a little too far out of the cowl. I had to push the engine that far forward to allow clearance for the Slimline muffler on the G 62. Maybe if it balances OK once I get it all together, I might quit looking at the hub.

Status: offline 		Mike, I really don't know how you could fix that situation other than buy a different muffler and a new cowl. That way the engine could be moved back so that the prop would clear the cowl by 1/8" to 1/4". If you don't do this you will probably be kicking yourself for a long time.

It sure is a beautiful plane.

I agree with Big Bird about moving the engine back. I know this suggestion is gonna hurt but maybe recess the muffler into the fuse enough to move it back if you can't find a shorter muffler. You're right. I'll be kicking myself if I don't fix it. On another plane I have a Bennett muffler that will cure the problem, but they're loud. My current setup has a wood loose piece hat section bolted to firewall, moving the engine out. Could be replaced with a flat aluminum plate.

Before I do anything, one more question. I've seen prop hub extensions for G62. Does anyone make a shorter hub? Mine scales at about 1.25 in. thick. I guess if there isn't one, I cold go to the local machine shop and have one hogged out. Probably expensive.

I am not sure about the short extesions for the G-62, a local machine shop might do it for a nominal fee just to help you out. They would basically just be machining the OD and the bore and front and back face and it can be truned out on a lathe in 15 minutes, the keyway is another story. They will have to broach the keyway in and then drill and tap for the brop bolts. If they have the proper tools it should be about 1.5 hrs of labor and most shops are at about $65 an hour labor charge. So with that being said you are probably looking at $100 to get one custom made but then your crank will most likely still be extending out past the prop a good distance.
I would recommend changeing the engine mounting and the muffler, if it's louder they will just hear you coming

Status: offline 		Mike, I have never heard of a shorter extension for a G-62. I am using a Bennett muffler (exhaust diverter) and it is not objectionably loud.
