Big Bird and Anthony,

I'm going with a Bennett muffler. It's doable. My cowl came with the package I bought. It's the same one callled for on the plans. Maybe I can fill it back in where the Slimline cut was made. Otherwise I guess Fiberglass Specialties is the source for new one?

The cowl looks good and the price is $38 if the price is still good. I would give them a call.

Guys,

In an earlier thread, I was convinced I should rework the engine installation to get the prop hub back where it belongs leaving the prop only a half inch in front of cowl. I'm in Tucson and visited friends flying serious models here. I brought up the issue of drive hub being too far forward on my Waco. Several guys showed me their scale planes and pointed out that their props were out in front of the cowl at a distance somewhat greater than scale on purpose. They claimed it was done for prop efficiency and that there was a noticable gain in performance. I can understan their point, but I'm wondering what the difference really amounts to?

Another subject. At least one local company here manufacturers the unmanned planes being used by the military. I was told some of the top RC pilots are contracted to the military to train pilots. Interesting. They also fly their test planes from the local RC field at times. None there when I visited.

Of course when it comes down to it you need to make the decision is it acceptable to you. That is all the matters. You can always cheat the cowling forward just a little as well to help. Either way you will have a nice loking Waco and will enjoy flying it.

Just thought I'd check with you Pepino 1/4 scale YMF guys to get some input on engine choice. I'm just starting to build the Peter Barth 1/4 scale and am still contemplating what I'm going to use for power. I do have a DA-50 available and a G-62 with CH ignition, both fine running engines. But what I'd really like, just for the nice sound for such a nice airplane, is a 4-stroke gasser. The only thing I've found that might work is the RCS VT-50. However, I've read here and there that although it's a very nice engine it really doesn't have the power that you might expect. One fellow thought maybe about the same hp as a G-38. Now I'm not looking for power to go unlimited vertical or anything like that, but I would like enough beans to easily take it through a nice big circular loop. I'm not sure a motor equivalent to a G-38 would be up to that for this airplane. Plus that VT-50 is pretty pricey $$$yikes$$$. I'm thinking I may have to forego my 4-stroke gasser idea and go with the 2 cycle. I haven't read all the posts in this thread but I get the feeling that the G-62 is sort of the engine of choice for you folks. Peter Barth likes the big Laser glow motors, but I much prefer to stay with gas. Any thoughts or comments.

Mike I have the G-62 with CH Jump Start in mine and really do like the performance. I didn't have to add any balance weight to the plane. Here is a video of the maiden flight. It's pretty jumpy but I couldn't fly and do the taping. I'm not quite that good yet. At least you can get an idea of the performance.

Nice flight Ken, and nice looking airplane. Your G-62 certainly seems to be a nice fit and has plenty of power. Is your choke servo-actuated or can you get at it to choke it by hand? Also, how much does your WACO weigh? It seems to handle very well and very scale-looking. Thanks for the video.

Now, as to shooting your own videos while flying, I guess you're just going to have to work on that

Hi Mike,

Yes, the choke is servo operated. I do that on 3 of my planes and that makes it really convenient. In an emergency it is another way to kill the engine although I have never had to do that. My Waco weighs 28 pounds.

The video thing will take a little more work.

Ken, Would you mind my asking what prop you are using on the Z62? I have the same engine and I am putting it in a 1/4 scale Skybolt. In the past I have used a 22 X 6-10 Zinger. Looking for suggestions!!

Jim, years ago I used Zinger props but have found that there are better props on the market. I currently fly XOAR and NX props. One seems to be as good as the other. I use a 22 x 10 XOAR on the Waco/G-62.

Thanks for that Ken. I did some looking around and you are not alone in your assesment of this prop and they are available in Canada from Great Hobbies! I have also been looking for a 17" prop to run on my G23 in my 1/5 scale Waco. I broke the 18" zinger on a bumpy landing (no other damage!) and a chap leant me a 17 X 6 Zinger. It was this or not fly. But I found I had a better prop/motor combination and have been seeking a 17" prop since then. The 18" seemed to load up my 23cc too much but works OK on my buddy's 26cc. They aren't stocked by most LHS or Great Hobbies, but the 17 X 6 and 17 X 8 XOAR is and is now on order. I have never got a Zinger prop that I didn't have to spend time balancing. Most XOAR are appearently well balanced.

Hey - You got that right!! Mine (yellow) had maidened last fall with real "pucker periods". Later the wildness was smoothed out and she now has a couple of dozen flights on her. Snowball is yet to maiden his and is stocking up on toilet paper for the event!
