I have a small 6000 BTU air conditioner in my 12' by 16' foot shop. After I turn it on in this kind of weather it takes about 1 1/2 hours to knock the temperature down to a comfortable level. My shop is well insulated and it has double pane windows.

When I realized that there was no way to get it ready to take down to Bomber Field I lost a bit of my drive. That's OK because I'll be prone to put a lot more scale detail into it since I won't be rushed.

I've been going through 3 other of my gassers getting them ready for Bomber Field in mid September.

BB, What kind of coverite are you using on your model? The old kind or the stuff they are calling antique?

It's the old kind, probably 10 years or older. It still seems a fresh as the first time that I used it. Thanks to a good friend I have enough left to finish the job.

I covered my 1/3 scale Super Decathlon and 1/3 scale Bucker Jungmeister with Solartex from Balsa USA and I really do like that also.

Ken, That's what I figured. I still have some left from my Flybaby, but probably only enough to cover the fuse and tail feathers, and I am not real sure about painting the antique kind since it is already prepainted. Did you paint the solartex, or is it prepainted? I wish I could find some of the old coverite!!!!

On the SD I covered with white and left it white in some areas and painted it in other areas with Krylon. On the Jungmeister I left it mostly yellow and painted some areas. On both planes I sprayed Rustoleum clear.

I finally got back to working on it this week. I filled in and covered the LG legs with balsa. They have been sanded to shape. I made the wheel collar pieces for the wheel pants and epoxied them in. More odds and ends to do next week.

What have you been up to?

Ken, it's been slow going for me the past couple of weeks as well. I now have everything framed up except the ailerons. I have the wing joiners installed, used brass tubing for both sides. I have been dying to go ahead and cut out the cockpit opening but haven't decided which version to use yet. I have been having a devil of a time getting the bottom wing located correctly, first with the incidence, second with the wing fitting inside the fuse, and thirdly getting the wing level. The right wing tip is slightly lower than the left. I double checked the dihedral on both sides of the wing and they are identical, 2 degrees. Are you installing the door and navigation lights on yours?

Guys,

I have obtained some supplemental detail sheets from the Pica 1/5th Waco YMF for a 1930’s style cockpit. They are not drawn to scale, so they can be adjusted to fit your ¼ scale JP Waco. Starting with post #3646 (on page 183) of the Pica Waco YMF over in the Vintage and Antique section, I have broken down the sheets and posted reference pictures of the details from full size Wacos (not necessarily from a YMF, I don't have access to an original) that match closely to the drawings. If anyone would like to recreate a simpler 1930s cockpit instead of the new 3 panel (loaded with avionics and upolstered) cockpit I hope these will help. If you need larger/better photos, let me know via PM.

Your collective help is needed. Over on the Pica Waco pages, I mentioned that scale functioning landing gear (both the main gear and tail unit) was under development. Dany from Team Genisis has asked Darrell Tenny at Sierra Giant to work on the gear and Darrell has indicated that he needs input from Waco YMF/UMF fans to see if there is enough interest to make the gear. Sierra is tops in making gear, much better than others. Once the drawings are complete, they can be scaled to whatever size is needed and the CNC machine can make the gear. Don't respond here; contact Darrel at www.sierragiant.com or 440-476-4885. Thanks.

Ken, I am still not sure about the door, but I do plan on installing the nav. lights. I have never done them before, but with the size of this model, I see no reason not to.I would be open to any suggestions, as I am not sure what all is involved.
John, you have been a tremendous resource of information on the Waco's, thank you very much. I still read the other thread every day. Do you have any photo details on the door? As far as the tail wheel gear goes, I built mine myself, as did Ken I believe, but with the Brotherhood growing like it is, I would think the demand would be there for semi commercial production.

Scott,

Most of my Door pictures have been posted. You can see the basic construction of the 1930s door is similar to what we can construct out of balsa. Use the outline on the plans and build the door accordingly. It hinges at the front with a piano type hinge. I have seen other hinges used but the piano is correct on the YMF. The door handles also varied a bit, but usually use just a simple turn latch to hold it closed (can be seen in one of the pictures).

I'll be up at the airport next weekend and find out about the Navigation Lights. I believe they are "constant on" verses "flashing". The newer versions have a combination "flash and strobe" on the very end of the wing tips, a belly strobe and no tail nav light.

John, thanks very much for the information. I'll look into it. As far as the Waco that I am working on, the gear is already finished and I'll be sticking with it. I don't have any plans to make my plane into a competition scale model. It will be colorful and good looking but I don't compete in scale.

Scott, I am sorry that you are having a lot of trouble with wing alignment and fit. I spent many hours on this problem. Most of the time was spent on the drawing and making the parts precisely fit the drawing. During actual assembly I didn't have many problems. Measure, measure, and do it again.

Here is a photo of the cockpit cutout. I will eventually cutout the front cockpit when I determine the actual location and shape. I know it is larger than the back cutout. The front cockpit was very roomy when my son and I went riding in the YMF-5 (Classic Aircraft). I sure would like to come up with a light weight 1/4 scale full bodied pilot for the rear cockpit without spending $200. Of course I can't make a full cockpit out of the front one because the gas tank is located there. I may just use a cover for the front cockpit but still have to cut it out so the cover will slightly sink in and fit right.

Here is a photo of the left LG. This is the way I set up the wheel collars in the wheel pant using a 1/4" collar and laminated pieces of 1/4" light ply.

Most likely I will install a door and navigation lights. I will probably install headlights using the super bright white LEDs.
