Wondering if any of the many folks out there who have put Ziroli P38's together can help me with the gear doors on mine.
Looking at scale documentation, the Lightnings in Oshkosh and Dayton, as well as Galcier Girl in Kentucky, a couple of things are clear. First off, there is a characteristic gap at the fore and aft portions of the doors when open between the door and the boom edge. Photos show that this is caused by the use of a scissor hinge at about six locations on the full scale, evenly spaced down the door. The result is that the door extends down, as well as out, and literally moves away from the boom when fully extended. This ensures the door cannot interfere with the gear as it deploys, I assume, but it sure is complicated. There are no less than six pivots in each hinge to make this go.
My question revolves around the fact that the Ziroli design calls out simple, single pivot Robart #350 hinges. On a wood fuselage, there is a spruce edge support running down the length of the boom bay edge which will interfere with the hinge placement. In addition, I have attempted to place the hinges in a number of spots, mostly towards the center of the bay, and the door always fouls the edge of the boom before it fully extends.
In desparation I fabricated scissor hinges like the full scale, and sure enough, the door moves down and out enough to clear the edges, AND I get the scale gaps mentioned above.
But I really do not want all this complication just for a gear door, and I know that other guys have solved this. Could someone ad vise me on the placement of the Robart #350s in a wood boom? And - does the design support doors that close completely?

I would use the offset aluminum Robart hinges, or the Sonictronics offset hinges.
