Hi all, I'm new, my name is David and I live in the UK

I have just ordered a DF 36 with an 1800 li-po

I would like to know which motor I should upgrade to as I gather they are not very good from the factory.

Is the walkera 180? any good or should I look for Align motors.

I have seen the Align 420LH mentioned. Are the 400LH and 450LH suitable or does it need to be a 420?

Thanks
David

do NOT go for the walkera motor!!! You will want to go for the 420LF instead of the other two you mentioned, they're not suited for this perticular heli. So far I haven't heard a single complaint from the 420LF... none...

I notice you're a real advocate of the Align 420LF. Why this model of Align motor in particular? The reason I ask is that yesterday I smoked my both my ESC and Motor. Spent pretty much the whole day researching and eventually I ordered up a 25amp Align ESC and an Align 430L motor from Grand RC. I would have ordered a 420LF but they're sold out (many other vendors too). Looking at the statistics the two motors are very similar. I ordered the 3150kV motor which I imagine is a little lower compared to what you're running but I'll just compensate with an 11tooth pinion. Other than that the 430L seems to use 10 less watts and has 10% more efficiency. It's two grams heavier too.

Anyone have an opinion on this choice of motor in a Walkera #36?

Regards

I Just installed the 430L motor and it seems awesome. It has an internal cooling fan which keeps the motor very cool. I don't even think there is a need for a heat sink.

I just added some pics to my gallery if you want to look.

The 430L is the newest revision of the 420 series. The 430L has a bit more power and is more efficent, plus runs cooler. I've got a 430L 3550 here and it's incredibly powerful for something so small and barely even gets warm.

The 430L would be more than capable enough for the DF36

Excellent! Thats exactly what I wanted to hear.

Larry man, nice setup! I see you too decided to rid your machine of any traces of Walkera Electronics Makes for a pretty satisfying machine once you do! Have you tried any max collective climb outs or anything more extreme with your 430L? My 200watt BL motor had incredible power, I can only imagine what 280watts will do! Alas, I must wait for parts for a couple weeks. Guess thats comes with the hobby, though.
Getting much flying done in that rain? At least the snow up here is "dry"

Hey Brett,

Yeah I slowly but surely got rid of all the walkera stuff and started selling it on Ebay. I think I'll keep the servos in case I need a temporary spare. The Wa transmitter I just use for fms. I am getting G2 in couple of days so hopefully it will work with that as well. It's supposed to. A couple of days ago I hammered the throttle full for the first time ever and wholy crap did that thing climb like rocket! I don't even have much pitch at max. I think my pitch is only about +1* to +6* at most.

Actually we've only had about 1 day of rain in the past 2 weeks. It's just been kind of breezy a lot, but mostly sunny and coldish. Well cold for Victoria. -2 to +7.

Hey where are you ordering your parts from? If you check on the Great Hobbies web site you'll find that they have a plethora of shogun parts which I am quite sure fit almost all of the 36. I found them on there 1 day, but it wasn't easy. You have to search by manufacturer - Global. Some of them are a little expensive though, but you would probably have them in your hands in a couple of days.

Thanks for your replies. I am going to try to find an Align 420LF and 35A ESC on eBay as these seem to be recommended by most.

Cheers
David
