Status: offline 		Ian, that new fan is a MONSTER! I love it. Is that more like an "Airbus" type fan dimension (e.g. relative to wing and plane size). I realize you are not creating a model of the Airbus...just using it as an example.

Status: offline 		I loved the little RR logo on the side! It is cute. As for my 301 Southwest I am still far from finishing it, while we are busy building parts for the SDO[1].

Most recently, I have assembled the main and nose retracts, rudder control and a few electrical stuff related for navigation lights.

[1] SDO is NASA's Solar Dynamic Observatory satellite, to be launched in 2008 to study the Sun and replace the to-be-retired SOHO Satellite.

Status: offline 		A truly beautiful model, but alas, it`s closer to a B737, than a B757. The 757 is a longer leaner airplane, and the windshield doesn`t look like a 727. Thanks for the info though.

Status: offline 		Below, the new 307 nose cone. Wing span 6.5 ft, powered by two midi fans. The 307 will be similar in configuartion to the 303.

Status: offline 		Just recieved my 301 kit. Very impressed. Will most likely will use the Southwest Airlines paint scheme. All the post are a great help and very interesting some additonal lift device such as flaps. Are flaperons somthing that woud help? Also plan to use my vacuform to make some scale features such as gear struts.

Yours will become the next Southwest after mine, but in fact you may finish earlier than mine, since I have barely enough time to eat and sleep.

As for the color scheme, I recommend TAMIYA TS-57 FOR BLUE, TS-8 FOR RED AND TS-56 FOR ORANGE. I have searched a lot for the correct Southwest colors and indeed found them from Krylon but the quality of TAMIYA is for superior to Krylon's. For the landing gear struts, I used Robart's plastic strut covers. If you are planning to add retracts, I must warn you that it will take a ton of work since you must change the wing assembly to make room for the retracts. Also you may purchase a servo delay unit for realism.

Let me know if I can help. I have made a lot of changes to the plan to accomodate my extras and learned a great deal as to what to do and what not to do.

Not to worry the race is never on with rc. Thinking of the older southwest paint scheme . (San Diego).
Do you know the Tamiya Brown #
Not to concerned with retracks as much as high lift devices as I belive I could hang out in the pattern all day (12 minutes). I wonder if a slat / flap setup provides any benifit regardless of weight penilty. I am all about scale with airliners.

I am also for scale looks. More than the extra lift, I have built the fowler flaps for scale looks. No matter how you slice it, any additional feature may add weight to the model. Furthermore, watch for the additional drag.

And the hacker motors and ESC's before i build the plane i want to have all the neccessary equipment. And other various electronics servos and such. But if you have any tips on different servos or easyer to acuire components for the plane i would be gald to here it. I have to read the thread you have on the plane through. and i'm sure everything that i want to know is probably in the build thread. but if not i will be asking alot of questions i'm sure. thanks for your time.

Status: offline 		The 305 was my second EDF model I also built their 303. I hacked retracts into the 305 and I do not recommend the modification. Also be advised the wattage retracts I used are no longer available. I love the lights but as I fly in the daytime almost nobody notices them. Enjoy,

Status: offline 		Hello, There is something I wounder about. Why does the fan only come with 3 blades? Isnt it much better with more blades, makes a more realistic look? Or doesnt that work?

And About the E-flite plane, why is it just one plane like this? It would be so fun if they could produce different airplanes .. like Lockheed, and MD11 and like Boeing 727 and so on

I still wounder why the fan is only with 3 blades not more... do anyone have an answer on that?

Ian's kits are more expensive because they are in a completely different class from the E-flite model. Don't get me wrong; the E-Flite is a quality model and is perfect for it's price range. But, it is foam and doesn't have either the polished appearance or the engineering that Ian's planes have. And, for the money, they shouldn't.

Ian's planes are engineered like helicopters; they make use of bolts and other systems that allow for greater strength and the ability to easily repair in case of a hard landing or crash. If you look back in this thread at the Frontier Airlines model, you'll see that it is a beautiful scale model that one could easily compete with. That is why they cost more. In my view, the cost is worth it if you want to have an impressive ship that looks as good in the air as it does in your office hanging from the ceiling!

I like to pump Ian's products because I believe modelers should pay attention to his engineering methods and support his business. He makes a terrific product and the longer he is in business, the more cool stuff we get to buy!! (like that new honkin' huge 777-type airplane he is creating).

Please do post your 305 build here. As you will now gather, the build is not the usual. Each step (hopefully) in the manual is there for a reason.

Actually, Linkadrip, you may wish to start a new thread on your build. That way, folks won't have to wade through a bunch of posts to watch your progress. Having said that, while in your thread, you can link over to this one for additional reference if folks need it.

Hello Lars

You have in fact asked a very difficult question. We as manufactures of models do not specialise in fans.

We as manufactures of models are more interested in watts generated per Kg of model weight.

So, for example, EDFmodel fancies the WeMoTec and Alfa range of fans. It is to do with the quality of materials used, examples of models flying with such fans and cost. There are other good brands available too.

I think you were given reference to specialist material on the subject.

Whether a fan has 3 or 4 blades makes no difference when the fan is turning and that is all that counts.

Does the model fly well in the air? On the ground –well it would be nice to have many blades like a real aircraft –but….

We leave all of this subject to the specialists in fan manufacture.
