Hello Ian, tank you for an interesting answer. I think it would be really nice with a fan with many blades as the real ones. The engine is in my opinion the most interesting part when buying these airplanes, the fact that they really push the plane up in the air.

But I see your point.

Beautiful airplane, Ian. As usual!

How do you get the nice glossy appearance on the paint? I have your 301 kit (cant wait to start it BTW), and I noticed the fuse was white plastic. At first I thought you got the glossy finish by painting the inside of clear plastic part, but since the parts are white, that cant be the case. Can you share how you got the nice gloss finish?

Thanks!

Jason

I really wish he would stop posting such beautiful pictures. I have already built two of his kits, If my wife sees another box coming from Australia she will condemn me to an institution.

Hello Jason

Polycarbonate paint on the outside of the fuselage (use the Tamiya PS range) to add any colur strips and Tamiya PS-1 white on the inside of the nose cone. If the fuselage is white, then just leave it. The reflection is constant (or nearly). The 301 and 307 are made from the same materials. So your 301 should come up looking like below even if you paint a colour strip on outside. Obviously, gloss is best.

Ian.

Hello, the models are so beautiful, but isnt there anyone whitch has a MD model? MD 80/90? Passenger aircraft? Are they harder to control in the air?

and by the way, is there buildt a smaller model in the world? I have always dreamed of flying a small RC airliner. Is it possible to build it half the size of Ian's models?

Lars,

I think the issue is the size of available fans. The Wemotec Micro at 50mm is a good choice considering performance and cost. To stay close to scale you start with the 50mm fan and design the plane to fit. Maybe there are smaller high quality fans but I am unaware.

Ian, thanks for the information. I have some pattern plane stuff to finish up and the 301 goes on the workbench shortly. United colors. Im telling you Ive already told my wife about the ah, eherm, 707 looking airplane you posted elsewhere, and you have my order if it happens! That one (if it happens) gets old old old United colors.

Lars, I too am planning an MD-80, and have not yet found an MD-80 model in complete kit form. However there are a few resources to check out. I hope he doesnt mind, but theres a man named Keith Sparks that will sell plans for a foam MD-80 (its a beautiful airplane if built properly, but its pusher prop. Im going to convert mine to EDF) and I believe Norbert Rouch in Germany also has a short kit (just nose, nacells and I think tail) of the MD-80 but its huge at 1/16 scale. Hope this helps.

BTW, Lars, the kits Ian sells are really a great size, and as said above, a perfect fit for some of the smaller EDF units.

Hello, Thank you all for very interesting answers.

I love Ians models, but they are too expensive for me, and they are too beautiful to crash, so I must wait until I have even better experience with flying RC planes before I purchase one.
To ship something to Norway does cost a lot of money, but does anyone know someone that ship the E-flite Super Airliner abroad, to Norway? I havent found one that does
Hope anyone knows.

Thanks for answers. And I hope you get your MD 80 finish, it is so exciting to see others airplanes. I schould be an own EDF Airliner album to look in

Regards Lars from Norway

Lars,

I believe you know the E-Flite airliner is made of foam. That is why the cost is low. Now add up the cost of the motors, controllers and two batteries. The two motors are about $110 (USD) the controllers about $100 and the batteries are about $89 EACH for a total of $388. Does it really make sense putting that much money into 155 dollars of foam? That plane is going to cost you over $500!

Save your money and buy a high quality kit. How do I know? I bought an E-Flite Super Airliner! I am not criticizing the kit, it is complete and well designed. Reports indicate that it is a good flyer.

But my Lear Jet (EDFmodel) is outstanding check it at:http://www.rcuniverse.com/magazine/article_display_preview.cfm?article_id=755

Hi All,

In Germany there is a guy by the name Peter Michel (http://www.michel-concorde.de/index2.html) who builds and flies awesome airliners. If I remember correctly he started by using Norbert Rauch's plans (http://rauch-airliner.com/). However these are NOT like Ian's kits. First off they are fiberglass, balsa and for turbine power. Peter Michel's Boeing 747 (Lufthansa livery) is an awesome 60kg (132lb!!!!).

In my humble opinion, if you are building airliners for the looks and performance, and if you are not planning to spend the money for a kit that costs as much as a brand new Mercedes-Benz, then build Ian's planes.

That said, just for the fun of it, check out Peter's and Norbert's Web sites.

Serdar

Hello,

I have calculated. To ship anything into Norway is very expencive!!! Taxes and so on. The E-flite kit will be costing around 500$ yes, and thats oki I guess since it has gotten such a good reputation. But I heard from another buyer of Ians models from Norway that said his airplane costed up to 1500$ and thats a difference. Does the E.flite kit need lesser take off place than the other ones?

Its no doubt that the Ians models are much more delicate airplanes, but also more risky to fly in my opinion when the costs are so high.
