Where in this statement do you see area?

I was replying to the quote in the box.

cross-section area to the minimum allowed

The meaning of my reply depends on you reading the entire post and following the thread. I should have added the word area since that was my implicit meaning.

. Barnaby Wainfan...there is a name from my past. Worked with Barnaby at Northrop Grumman for 10 + years. To say the least a "out of the box" creative aerodynamc thinker. Almost Rutan like. Back in the day we use to build sport models of his creative designs and see how long we could keep them in the air. Ever seen a model airplane just suddenly tumble/cart wheel to the ground. I have. That was 10 years ago and still I can't stop laughing when I think about it. As a wind tunnel engineer it was interesting to see some of his concepts evolve and even more interesting to see his "patented" concepts being used on todays fighter aircraft.

The most obvious difference is the switch from EXternal to INternal elevator linkage. Hopefully , they have beefed up some of the internal weak areas, like the area in front of the v-tail thats been know to fracture rather easily??

It came today! And what a piece of work! It is a real beauty and on a scale of 1-10 she’s a definite 10. And I didn’t have to glue or iron on one darned piece!

From Tower Hobbies it came double-boxed. I cannot believe how everything is separated! The control rods are even stuck in a foam block so they don’t puncture or scratch anything. Nothing slides around at all during shipping so you are pretty much guaranteed not to have any problems. All the control linkages are hidden within the fuse. Very nice and sleek!

As the box shows it does come with some semi-cool wheels but I think I may go with the Cadies as they look a little sharper. All the parts came individually wrapped and there is even a nicely made aluminum motor mount, stainless steel hardware, gas tank, V-Tail control linkages, and even the firewall is heavily glassed!

You see those white fibers in the aileron servo well on the main wing? Yeap that’s right! Glassed center-section. Although, it’s so smooth you can’t tell by looking at the outside of the wing. The fuse has a landing gear notch cut out for a perfect fit.

The front and back of the wing saddle have plywood double reinforced wing hold-down areas including the landing gear mount which all are blind-nut backed. There is also a servo access hatch behind the saddle as well.

The rear end of the fuse is super aerodynamic and has a readymade skid and access hatch for V-Tail control linkages also. The V-Tail fits like a glove and the top hold-down piece is all carved out and done for you. Wow! What a fit! So smooth and sleek! This thing is pure eye candy!

I can’t believe how smooth the corners of the wing are molded and how nice and tight the feel of this plane is! It just looks fast sitting here! Gotta get building now so then there is nothing left to do but to buzz the pylons!!!!!!!

So Reno, anymore info on the Predator II? IE: any weak points that I should reinforce, etc.

A buddy is pushing me to get one with him so we can go chase and be chased. The San Gabriel Valley club has a .25 slow quickie race that we could start out with (while I've been flying fast planes, I've never flown around pylons before), this will let us concentrate on learning the lines around the pylons.

Do you think the plane will balance with a .25 and a long engine mount? Or just go with a TT.40

Since you're in La Habra, do you fly at Whittier Narrows?

Dan

Hi Dan!

God I’ve been busy lately! Family, house needing attention, work, and just plain life issues. It’s amazing I’m able to make the time to fly! Man's gotta have his priorities though!

I haven’t had time available to work on the PII yet. I did like the first one so much in looks and build alone that I bought another as a backup model! I also picked up a couple K&B 20’s for our Slow Quickie class. I figure that will be a good place to start before going head first into the AMA 424! Are you going to Crosswinds pylon race at Castaic in May? That is my next race I’m shooting for.

I crashed my AT-6 last weekend when the unglassed wing folded in mid-air so I’m building another at the moment and most of my weekends and week nights are going into that darn thing. I hope this is not a trend where we build our next planes better and better, as paying more and more attention to so much detail takes an aweful amount of time! It sure would be a lot nicer if we could take these AT-6’s out of the box and only recover them & add our equipment instead of having to go over the joints with glue & glass! Sheeesh! I think that’s what I like about the Predator. Just drop you equipment in! It’s ready!!!

Yeah I fly at the Narrows! You should come out sometime so we can meet up. Or I can meet you at Sepulveda sometime. Let's see, the Sepulveda race isn't till July 23rd. I'll let you know before-hand when I get back up to the air strip & I'll bring the PII with me so you can check it out. I will honestly tell you I like the plane a lot but I can in no way be a good source for comparison info with it. A lot of people say really good things about the Viper or Vortex and then there’s Seekers and many others which I’ve never even held, so you can just see for yourself my PII & draw your own conclusions. Heck maybe you can even teach me a thing or two about what kinds of things to look for in a pylon racer!

I don’t see any reason why the motor won’t balance the plane out as I don’t think there is a huge difference in weight between the TT or OS.25’s and the TT.40. I have all three engines so I can measure for sure & see what the differences in weights are. Like you say you could buy the long motor mount and shift the engine forward a bit & that should take care of it.
Let me read through the instructions later & see what it says about balancing. I would hope they’ve made the plane to not need any weight to get the cg correct. Now that I’m thinking about it I tend to fly my planes tail heavy anyway so a slightly lighter motor may be advantageous to me!

If you're ever in the area you're more than welcomed to swing by the house. Just let me know.

Ron.

Oh BTW, with your B/L pylon planes you've been flying, you are prolly going to think these things are slow with the little ol' .25's in them. Therefore you'll be a better pilot and a shoe-in for kicking my butt with your experience. But in my opinion, the coolness factor of these planes and races is off the chart!

Well, my buddy gave me cash to go order the PII and a TT .25 from Tower, so I'll get one for me and one for him (no backup planes just yet) That means I'll have to deal with more planes showing up at my house instead of at his house...sneaky he is.

I've been flying fast planes only for a little while but I'm prepared to take my lumps in a real race and be humbled by those with the racing knowledge and proper lines to round those pylons. I do know that the fastest plane is not always the winner, but whoever is in front at the end of the race.

We'll play it by ear as far as which races to try for. I'll order the planes tonight when I get home to see if I have any coupons from the last Tower flyer.

Reno, hope to see you at Whittier, maybe Sat. or some midweek morning.

Should be FUN!

Dan
