Oh yeah, that huge vstab has some strange effect on inverted flat spins. The plane comes out of a right-side-up flat spin immediatly as soon as I straighten the rudder out, but it recovers from inverted flat spins much slower if at all. I've had a couple of inverted flat spin landings so far because it would not recover. I think this is because of the large vstab anyway.

Me too. I can descend pretty fast that way.

i have no idea why that would do it. i have a plane kinda similar and if i let the controls go it comes out no matter what its doing.
i think left aileron is the standard 'get out' for most things, and if that dont work, it wont, at least thats what i was told

Here is another weird plane that I am working on. It is an He Lerche. It's been on the back burner for a while now since I want to get some experience hovering more conventional type planes first. Here is some info on the plane http://users.visi.net/~djohnson/heinkel/helerche.html .

It will be powered by an O.S. 32sx, have three gyros and weigh about 2.5 lbs. It is very stucturaly strong so far with all the carbon fiber strips on it. I imagine that it will take a beating while I am trying to learn to land it on its tail wheels.

The main reason that I am afraid of this plane is that its small wing area is going to make for a high wing loading of 30oz/ft*2 and deadstick landings will be very hot. I currenlty have the 32sx in a 2lb 5oz Pizza Box Flyer and the engine has been very reliable so far. Here is the plan.

wow, 2 engines, i hope you've got that top tank with the clunk at the bottom still.
i think i'd be too scared to ever get that past the hover stage.
your going to end up with alot of cross mixing but hopefully they'll cancel out the torque.
make sure you got a video camera on every flight, this is one project i'd love to see more of

I decided to go with one 32sx instead of 2 RJL 15's for simplicity. I think it should work because it is essentially the same as the Organic Air Vehicle and Heli Rocket plane on this page http://www.spyplanes.com/Projects/index.html .

now that helirocket looks like something i was going to try a while ago, it was based on this flying box with a .049 on top, and fixed vanes that sorted the torque out, it had a little video camera fitted ( not mine lol ) and would climb up to 200 feet to spy then run out of fuel and tumble back down. i never got further than building something that looked like a bad lampshade

Those germans 'din arf' invent some weird stuff at the end of WW2, much of it far to ahead of its time for anyone to take note.

Craig, how are you gonna know which way is up? Even if it flew slow and gentle i know it wouldn't be long before i pulled the wrong way on a plane that was axially symmetrical (if that's even a term... i kinda pulled it outta my a**) like that.

That is another thing that scares me about the He Lerche. It should roll really quickly too, so it could be upside down in the blink of an eye. For the first flights, I'll paint the top side day-glow orange. That should help alot.

what if you used 2 HAL P2A units?
one for hovering in the take off and landing stage, another for level flight, or you could just rotate the one uni........ ah ha! perfect transistion to level flight from hover, as a servo moves the unit, the plane will bank over ( fully controled ) into level flight, the reverse for landing.....
