Guys, I can't keep this from you any longer. My Son, Charlie was killed last Saturday by a road side bomb while on a mission in Baghdad. He was 23.

He chimed in here a few times as TEEDOG. We had a great time together last Summer, chasing each others' tails and looked forward to many years ahead of doing the same. He was my best friend and my only child.

The guys in his unit are devastated, imagine what it must be like for them.

Charlie wrote out a 3 page letter to me the morning before he stepped out on his last mission, he never wrote, we always either talked on the phone or via Email, so I am anxious to recieve this letter.

His memorial service will be this Monday at the PRICE-HELTON funeral home in Auburn, WA., then we will proceed to the TAHOMA NATIONAL CEMETARY for the burial.

I am sorry to break the news to you all like this, but I want to honor my Son by putting his face into the hearts and minds of as many people as I can.........Chuck Matheny

Chuck: I sent you a private message. I hope you got it. I want to come up there and shake your hand someday, my friend. I and my family grieve with you. My son was one of the first to fly over Iraq, providing aerial recon and communications for the air and ground forces. He made it home OK, thank God. He has almost 20 years in the Navy and I am proud of him, as I am sure you are proud of your son. .I will think about you and your son whenever I fly now, and thank him and you for the sacrifices made for us to be free to enjoy our hobby. Roger S. CDR USN-ret. in Colorado.

Chuck I wish there were words to say that would bring comfort to you.
There just isn't. Your son's sacrifice speaks for itself.

I will try to honor you and your son by appreciating the freedom we enjoy and supporting our men and women in our military and their cause.

So very sorry to hear about this. I've been sitting here for a while looking at your sons picture, and find it hard to put into words the respect I feel for him and the others who fell before him. Very rarely do I chime in here, but I read the posts every day and it seems as if I've known you and the others for a long time which makes this feel like losing someone close to me. Please accept my condolences for you and your family and I believe you could not find a more befitting way to honor your son than to put his picture on here for the rest of your rc family.

Stay proud,
John

CHUCK; That news, Breaks my Heart .I`m So Sorry..I lost my best friend too,Gerry,my brother.Killed on a Snowmobile in 1994, Dec. 11. A car lost control, on the highway, and He was hit from behind. He was on a brand new snowmobile, going only 15 MPH.It was the kind of accident, that could not be, replicated if tried..He was 25 years old,and I really miss him a lot. These types of things, are the worst thing that can happen.Young Men ,in the ,prime of life. It`s just not fair.I know this story, is not the same as your Sons`, but ,I quess, what I`m saying,is, I know what your feeling.I can`t be, at your sons` MEMORIAL ,but ,my thoughts will be ...Sincerly;..DAVID J.BRONK

Of course nothing can replace the loss but I hope you know how much that service meant. If not for our military fighting the war over there, in their streets and among their homes, it would have continued to be faught here on our soil. I served as a Nuke Bio Chem warfare specialist in the Army and spent my time in the desert during the last round. My son will be entering the military in about 6 years, so believe me, any loss of a soldier is very real to me.
