hhhmm.. this kit is interesting.. much different from the guillows.

this is the hob p-51 1/2a scale, so it should fit in here very well..

just opened the kit and flipped through it. looks like the die cuts are very very clean. i was pleasantly surprised. all of the balsa peices popped right out. only some of the ply gave me problems.

i hope to have a large portion of this plane done this weekend. hopefully

does anyone have any experience with this kit? any suggestion of stuff i should look out for? any engine recommendations? i had a friend who built this same thing but ran it with an electric setup.. didnt survive its first flgiht. he was using a 6 cell nihm though.. got about 2 ft in the air (take off) and it nose over and went in. tore the front end up. he hasnt repaired it yet. trying to talk him into letting me try and repair it.

anyway. motor suggestions.. box says up to a .1 . what about radio equip? i think i am gonna use micro servos just to save some weight, if they have enough torque. hs-55's fine? what about retracts? woudl they work in somethign this size? or add too much weight?

well, darn.. i just ran into a big problem guys.. i was about 30 minutes into worked on the fuse sides.. when i noticed that the formers didnt quite match how they were drawn on the plans.. then i looked at the plans a little closer and noticed that their was a swastica on the rudder.. i thouhgt.. ok.. thats kinda wierd for a paint scheme on a mustang... then i noticed that the cocpit was not what it should be.... so i looked down at the bottom of the plans.. mess 109... crap....

so much for ebay.. this thing was supposed to be NIB... i sent them an email...

as far as i can tell everythign in the kit is p-51 cept for the plans.. which i do kinda need..

so, does anyone happen to have a set of these plans sitting around they could send me? or know of somewhere i could get them? i just broke down part of what i built.. hopefully what i have already done is similar enough between the two plans that i can recover when i get the right set....

I built one about 10 years ago, mine had a plan with the ME-109 on one side, the P 51 on the other side. I started out with a Cox TD 051, but finished up with a PAW .09 diesel. They're a little heavy and need some extra grunt, well mine did anyway........John

Hi Sneasle,

As noted numerous times in this fourm the best .10 going right now is the Norvel .074. The model will require some modification to get it in though. Heres one of my previous build pics of the same plane with .074 going in. I have seen these planes with a 15. on the nose too, but beware if you do that you will have one fast plane, not for the beginer. If you build light the TD will fly it but just baerly. The .061 Norvel would be a good choice for this one, less modification to the fuse and more power than the .049. Keep as much weight out of the tail as possible to avoid the need for additional nose weight.

I built one a few years ago with a TT 07. The engine didn't have enough power to fly it. Switched to a Norvel 061 and it flew great. If I were to do one again (probably will some day) I would use the same engine. HS 55's should be fine but I would consider using independent aileron servos. This would certainly make the setup easier by eliminating the torque rods.

Other suggestions: hollow out all the blocks as much as possible, fiberglass the bottom cowl block inside and out (for fuel proofing and strength), use carbon fiber pushrods with small wire ends, don't use any epoxy (I never touch the epoxy when building a 1/2a plane, they just don't need it. You can even CA the firewall!)

This plane flies beautifully! Retracts can be done. Although I have never done it, I know people who have. Forget all the negative you hear about the kit; having to carve blocks and all that. Carving is part of building. They are good kits and can yield great results if you take your time.

Brian,

Boy am I glad I read your post before building today. I was about ready to rebuild my P51 using a TT07 in the nose so I could lessen the weight and fly it a bit more relaxed.

The plane was origionally set up for my .15. The wings are fully sheeted and I've got some good reinforcement thruout so I'll stick to the .15 and keep it a speedster.

Sure is a tough little sucker, long live the "Silver Bullet"...

Cheers,

Alex
