Thanks very much for both of those sites. Now I think I have enough documentation to try making the main door open/close struts. I will use them and I hope others also. I have most of the stencils from Gary and ordered a german pilot from Cajun R/C in 1/5 scale.

Countryboy- That reproduction of the He-162 is truly amazing! As are all those planes! I wonder what scale it is? It looks just a little less than full scale, but then I have never seen an original He-162 photo with a person standing next to it for scale.
Carl- Keep up the good work! I'm going to print out this whole thread as a building reference.

Back to the HE-162. I measured placement for spar, wires and rear hold down and cut them out. I finished rough sanding the rest of the fuse and put the leading edge on the wings. I used E6000 to glue the rear plates inside the fuse and held them in place with the flat of the blind nut and a bolt. Flange of the blind nut faces the ply inside.
I have been thinking of building a HE162 and installing a turbine into it. After reading this thread I have a feeling it's not such a good idea, what are your thoughts guys??

I have never used a turbine. I think the main issue would be the paint and structure on the top rear of the fuse just below the hot exhaust. It would make for a heavier plane also.

yakka, CJM makes a version expressly for turbines. It uses hi-temp epoxy in the tail area to withstand the heat. I think Carl may be right in that keeping paint on in face of the exhaust heat. Some jet fliers in my club say it would be great with a turbine in it.

CJM does list a turbine kit with Stainless Steel exhaust tube, etc. People have built this kit with turbine power and someone in Europe has made a larger version turbine powered.
I cut out the control surfaces and spar area from the wing. I measured out one and then transfered to the other using the leading edge as reference. Picture shows one wing tip had more sheeting than the other but the airfoil is very close. I trimmed off the excess and a little sanding will make them even. I was a bit miffed about this but I think for what I paid it is OK. You just need to look at everything. Of course some of the balsa is warped and of different density but I think all kits are like this to some degree. That is why you pick your own balsa. Easy enough to work around and I am making good progress. The plans call for a band saw which I don't have so the cuts where made with jig saw with finish by hand.
I built a Platt design that allowed for the different thickness of control surfaces as they go out to the wing tip and made a change in the plans to do this. I will use 1/64 ply to cover the recessed hinges for a better scale appearance. I made the trailing edge cap 1/32 smaller. I will make hinges from G-10 and make mount pockets in the wing and control surfaces. I would like to hide the control horns but don't see a good solution so they will be hanging out on the bottom.

The pilot came in today from Cajun r/c. I like him, only 47 grams and he is ready for 30,000 ft altitude. I used JB weld to attach the SIG spar pocket to the ply brace. CJM advertises laser cutting of parts but this came from my own stock as the sheet of 1/8 ply was on back order when I ordered the kit. I have not heard any thing about the B/O parts from CJM. I added the balsa leading edges to the flaps and ailerons.
Next I will finihish up the spar assembly in the wing and shape the wing and control surfaces.

I have the spar pockets in the wing and the wing is sanded to air foil. I have capped all the sides of the control surfaces and capped the root of the wing. I cut a piece of foam core for the dihedral gauge and have the wings fit for the check. I believe I have a good fit so I will take it apart for gluing, bolting and glassing. I had to cut about three inches from each spar. All this is connected to the top of the main gear former to form one piece structurally. I like how its taking shape and I'm still following the plans step by step except for the landing gear.

I've heard that there is no such thing as a stupid question, so here goes. What is G-10 and where is the best place to read about its properties and applications? Where do you get it?
Thanks in advance!
