I have the second elevator half made with hinges. I assembled the pieces and put the horns on for a trial fit. I will have to assemble everything then glue the hinges then the horns. Lord help me if I ever have to access them, it will mean a hole cut in the bottom. I will lock the through bolt and nut with CA. Finished the elevator with glass and epoxy.

Making some epoxy dust this time. All the tail surfaces have a second coat of epoxy and are sanded ready for primer. I mounted one rudder with the cable to the belcrank then adjusted the bellcrank mount until it was level with the cables. I wanted a good lock on the cable sheath so I cut a 2.5 inch radius balsa former to attach to the sheath. I have the bellcrank mounted and have the second rudder ready. I have checked the rudder vertical line by using an incident meter on the elevator set to -1 then using a square on the leading edge of the rudders. I will have to be very carefull attaching the clevis to the cable to make sure both rudders are parrallel. Surfaces are moving freely so I have been doing OK and just glueing my fingers together. This and the change to the landing gear have been a nice challenge.

I mounted the other rudder and had to do a little surgery on the hort stab to fix the outer cable. I was hoping not to have to do that but its worth the clean lines to me. They are centered and work well. I still have some finish work to do before I align the tail and epoxy it on. Looks like I am a bit tail heavy , at least I have a long nose moment.

Rich,
You are up in the thin air! The Air Force puts a rocket on a brick and it flys. Maybe we could fill one with helium.
I think my wing loading will be about 50 ounces which is very close to my Wildcat so maybe the HE-162 will not be to hard to fly.

A fellow sent me a letter wanting to buy my Wildcat RTF, he had money and would pay shipping. He is in your state and I thought of you. I bet you could knock one out in no time.

I am getting pretty excited about this odd ball. Still have not received paint from Nelson's

Carl I have never built for anyone but that doesent mean I wouldn't. Most people don't want to pay for your time. It would be this fall before I would even consider it. I love to fish for Trout and it's that time of year. What kind of construction is yours? fiberglass and foam wing or build up? Thanks Rich

Rich,
I was just thinking of you and how much you build. I don't think anyone would ask me to build them a plane and I dought I would either. My list is to long as is. I did not reply to his letter because I don't think he would pay what it would cost for me to part with a model I want to fly and I did not really want to do his homework for him. The way I see it, if you want something bad enough you will do whats required to obtain it. All the parts are currently available for a 1/5 Wildcat even a glass fuse. If this fellow wants a Wildcat he will have to build one or fine a builder which is not impossible. It was just that he lives in the same state you do so I thought of you. Building is for pleasure not work IMHO.

I was looking at Platt's FW-190 and Vance Mosher is designing a Westland Whirlwind, that is a cool plane! I have been thinking about a Laser 160 twin to put in the Macchi C200 but $$$ and at least a year from now.

I did a little filling on the tail feathers of the HE-162 last night and will be working on servo placement for rudder and elevator then I can aline and attach the tail. It should be pretty much down hill from there. I received paint from Nelson's last night so I have all that is needed to finish.

Looks like the last couple of posts are gone. I will repost some pictures.

Last night I put everything lose on the HE and set the CG to 3 1/4. It took 14 ounces of ballast in the nose. This is just a ballpark test but it looks real bad. I weighed all the components and plane and added the ballast for a total weight of 16 pounds 2 ounces. This is not including glassed wings, primer and paint.

This is unacceptable to me as I don't want to have it at 17 pounds. I plan to do a complete rebuild of the tail section and maybe redo the cable from the pull pull bellcrank.
I am thinking about adding two more bellcranks left and right to continue the pull pull and just a short (3" 2-56 rod to the horn. Much more complicated than the cable and probably close in weight but hopefully it will solve the centering problem. Its about 36" plus from the CG to the tail and 28" or so from the CG to the nose. Every ounce from the tail will save more than an ounce of ballast. I think I will try using Polyurethane and glass on the tail with contest balsa for the complete redesign.

I will weigh the tail when I cut it off and see how much I have saved on the new tail. If I can save 4 ounces then thats more than 1/2 pound and I can live with that but really want more.

That's a bummer. What is the wing area? Have you figured your wing loading? If I remember right you are using a 90 df motor. Rich

Rich,
Yes I do hate having to redo things. I used thrust compare software with 16 pounds as the weight and it came up with 50 ounce wing load. The Wildcat I fly is 49 ounces so I think they will be similiar at falling out of the sky. Of course the DF will not have the response of a prop so I need to be careful. I am using a BVM 96 with Viofan which should give 13 plus pounds of thrust. This will not be a 3D machine and I will have to fly it on what wing it has. I really don't want to go past 16 pounds as I will be flying off of grass.

Here is what it currently looks like again with the tail attached. I did move the rudder and elevator servos forward about 6" and have them mounted inline. Plans called for mounting side ways.

I made some new plans for the vert stab and rudders from a photo I downloaded. The current base structure of the vert stab weighs 23 grams. I am making the rudder core with just and edge of 1/16 ply then cross balsa. I will lighten this also.

I plan to cut the tail off tomorrow night and weigh it. then plan and make a new hort stab.

I cut the tail off and put it on the scale. 20.4 ounces. Now to see what I can shave off this!
