I am almost back to attaching the control surface assembly again. I did not get the rib perfect for the elevators and have a bit of wave to them but I am going forward. After putting left and right hinges on each elevator I decided to add another much closer to the horn. Seems to me that this would be a high stress area. Now I am at 246 grams.

I have the tail all put together and it weighed more than my little scale could handle so I put it on my postal scale and was pleasantly surprised. I am at 9.6 ounces though I still need to glass most of it. Hopefully just a couple of ounces and maybe I will come in a 12 or so. This will take more than a pound of the weight so I should come in under 16 pounds dry for the HE-162.

Yes Rich this is really good for this plane. I think I have it strong enough. I may get some work done on it today as its going to be raining. Horizon Hobby did a great turn around on putting bearings in my 450r. Less than two weeks and $60. I am quite happy. I found the nose over problem with my Claude. To much toe in causing drag. Now I have just a tiny bit and the landings are great. I broke a prop on the Claude and tried a 17x6 instead of the 17x8 now the Saito is not happy and I was flying with a lot less power. The takeoff was on the edge of not clearing the trees at the end of the run way.

Carl

I forgot that you were flying a 7 or 9 cylinder motor. I bet that is even better than the FW-190!!

The flight on the Cloud sounds spooky. Thats the hardest thing to fly is a plane without enough speed. I test flew a cannard for a friend and it was the same way Saturdeay. He's going to put a bigger motor in it.
The radial that Ken has is a 9 cy in the Karras. and it really flies good. I made a collector ring for him and run it out in scale location.
I am glad you found the nose over problem with the Claud. Thats a good feeling.
I have about 25 flights on the Spitfire. It sure is sweet to fly. I haven't had a new warbird that is that easy to fly and land in a long time, not that they been bad just not this easy to fly. Rich

Well its about 3 weeks later and I have the tail mounted again . I made a saddle at the tail out of balsa fiberglass and epoxt so that I could mount the new tail. I have done some work on the ailerons and sanded down the wing tips so that I could attach the ends. I will have to fill in the top of the tail and hook up the controls then on to the rest.

I have the tail hooked up as before. Its working smoothly. The valley between the horizontal stabs is filled and I have the tail cone on. I decided to move forward and finalize servo and battery placement. I hooked up the retract servo and set travel and direction. I cut the lower nose off so that I can place my 5 cell pack and pack the tip of the nose with ballast.

I used two magnet chain pieces from my daughters toy box, with permission. They are about ¼ long and ¼ dia. I drilled two holes for wire to lock the front and drilled two ¼ holes in the rear to hold the magnets. I am using a total of four. Seems to hold very well.

I will mask off the canopy and hopefully keep it clean.

I have the duct work together and will install the fuel tanks engine and throttle next.

Carl,
Nice work on the new stab assembly. Do you think there is any way to lighten the original 'stock' piece sufficiently without weakening it much? Maybe drilling holes somewhere? I too would worry about adding a lot of nose weight.

I did not use the lite ply center for the vert stab supplied by CJM because it was to heavy on the orginial build. I also lighted a former and moved the elev and rud servo forward because of possible tail heavy condition. I probably could have made the tail a bit lighter the first time but I don't think the savings would have been as great. I am probably at 12 or so ounces if I add primer and the fairing at the valley. I don't see how its possible to remove 8 ounces from the fiberglass structure with ply spar and control surfaces. Maybe half of that all considered. That would be 1/2 pound added dead weight. The pull pull on the rudders saves a few grams also. IMHO it would be hard to come in less than 16.5 pounds with a BVM 96 and Viofan. I have no idea what other DF combinations might weigh. Still I wonder about electric DF for this plane, batteries $$$$ yes but weight in the nose is not a problem and maybe room for a nice cockpit. No heat to melt the back and no slime either. Might even have a lower CG. This one is top heavy.

I have the canopy roughed in now with a slight seam and the fuel tanks placed. I decided to route the throttle cable out the back of the BVM pod as there is not much room at the front of the engine compartment.

I should have the engine completely installed with duct work by the weekend. I need to finalize the gear struts and epoxy them in place as per CJM or maybe thin CA with the set screw will locate them will enough. The gear are in proper position now. After that its to the wing control surfaces. And then figure out gear door actuation.

I think this guy will surprise you. I aquired a Midwest HE 162 a few years back. He was glassed and weighed in at about 9 3/4 lbs.(!). Powered with a K&B with a 7.5 Turbax 1 and it flies great. I dont remember what the wing loading came out as, the span is around 60" and is rigged with a nose gear brake hooked up to the down elevator. We have a concrete runway and I just wind him up and let him go but it really isnt necessary, just want some running room in case of an abort. I think there is some added efficiency that come from the drooped wing tips.

I hope it gets off the grass and I hope it flys and does it well. The Midwest has a larger wing than this one, 57". I will know in a couple of months.

BTW, I had to comment on the fine work you've done on your ship. At the very least he approaches standoff quality and I really like the retracts, good work.

Thanks for the praise Roary m,
I just wanted to correct some big areas that where way off. Its not meant to be much more than sport scale.

I have the engine pretty well squared away with the ducting. I am using a C-tronics glow driver in this also. Still need to put a pipe hanger in the back. I am working on getting the engine cover on. Its not a very good fit and I don't think I will use the suggested method but something close.

I weighed all the components and the plane again. I am at 15 pounds as shown. The CG is at 2.5 inches with the gear down and 3 inches gear up no ballast. Now I am nose heavy a bit. This is a dream come true and it was very worth while to rebuild the tail. I still have to consider finishing the wings and tail with primer and paint all over but I can see coming in at less than 16 pounds dry. I think there is some hope it will get off the grass and fly. I should be painting by the end of June and maybe do the maiden in July. If its ready I might take it to WOD mid July. I will not fly it there this year but it will be different.
