I thought that I'd start a thread for this plane. The older 72" (no longer available) has a thread of its own, and I haven't seen one for the new version. If anyone knows of one, please let me know. Otherwise, we'll use this one!

Wayne at QS told me that it will be available in May. Per Wayne in an e-mail:

"It looks like not until May. They should ship any day now but our OEM hasn't confirmed the exact date. It will take 6 to 7 weeks after they ship. It is not necessary to pre-pay. We will have plenty of the 73" when they arrive so you will be sure to receive yours that you have on order. Molly will call you when we have them here and ready for shipment. Also we will put the assembly/flying manual on our website late March which will have all of this information ready."

They will call if you are on the wait list. If you aren't on the wait list, contact them and give them your contact info so you can be put on the list.

Here is how I plan to set it up:

Saito 180 with 17x8 or 16x8/10
Five JR Sport ST125MG Servos for control surfaces (125oz-in at 4.8V).
6V, 2700 mAh battery

I can't say I was too found of the 400 price tag of the original, hopefully this will be in the 300 range
I know it will fly good because it is by QQ aircraft.

Status: offline 		According to the website, www.somenzini.com it will be $419.

Judging from other ARFs in this size range, $300 would be dirt cheap. I don't know of any good quality planes in this class that are at $300. Generally speaking (very generally), scale, semi-scale, and sport-scale planes (ARFs) that require 90-100 size engines are around $275-$325, ones that require 120-180 size engines are $350-$450, ones that require 50cc gassers are $450-$600, and the 80cc guys are up around $600+.

I was once considering a Wild Hare Edge 540 73", but then if you add the plane ($299) and the hardware kit ($50) and shipping ($35-$55 according to Wild Hare), then you have a $405 plane. Any of the planes from Tower in this size class are $350-$400.

Also, consider that this plane comes with wing bags, free shipping, etc, and the fact that is was designed by one of the best pilots in the world.

I'm just saying that for a 73" YAK-54 designed for 1.60-1.80 engines, including hardware and shipping, and designed by QS, $419 is a good deal and I don't mind paying it.

Status: offline 		if the 73" flys as good or better than the 72" $500.00 would be a bargan. aslo i think i heard it would be built to take some of the small gass engines. that would be awsome!!!! i have the 72 with a 160FX OS and it is a blast to fly almost better than my 35% AM yak 54( almost).

Status: offline 		oh and the way QQ and Wayne support you after you buy the plane would make it worth 600.00. i had a small problem with my landing gear after a less than perfect landing and i called Wayne Ulrey to see if they had a heavy duty set of gear for sale. he said give him my mailing address and he would send a set of Graftech gear to me for FREE. now that is backing your products and great service.

if you want to pay less for a arf that is ok but you get what you pay for. if you want a great flying plane that is built very very well for a arf and great service get on the list for the 73" Yak from QS AIRCRAFT.

This 73" will knock your socks off. It's set up for both gas and glow. It is better than the 72" and the manual is really awesome. You will love it, I gaurantee you. As far as price goes I think it's a bargain for what you will be getting plus A+ customer service. By the way the color scheme is a little different than the 72". I know a little about this plane and I want to leave it at that and I also know how manual is done. QQAC has done every effort to make the manual easy to follow for the pilots/builders. Plenty of pictures and step by step instruction. Wait until they release it and see for yourself.

Status: offline 		Hey, as long as it's still light enough for a Saito 180, I'm a happy guy. According to QQ, when I was originally thinking of using an OS 1.60FX, he said that it was a perfect engine choice....I would think the Saito 180 is in there too.

Can't wait until May.....

Status: offline 		Yes you can use Saito 1.8. Here's the range of engines you can use

2-Stroke 1.4-1.6
4-Stroke 1.4-1.80
Gas 26-30cc

And you may get earlier than May. Hope this helps.

Status: offline 		This plane is not designed for DA50. The Yak 85" is. Normally smoke tanks are good for 33% planes and up because the weight of the planes up to 50cc range let's say is about 12lb-18 lbs and smoke system will affect your wing loading. Quique is not a fan of smoke system even on his 85".

Status: offline 		Well.... received my confirmation email from Wayne today. My name is "on the list", and I will be one Yak-happy dude to see it available. It may be good enough for me to reduce the fleet..... I'm counting on it.

Also considering a RCS 1.80 small gasser/Pitts muffler for this bird. Any opinions on that motor?

Anyway - IMPATIENTLY waiting on April....

You will love that airplane. I would say RCS 1.4 would be a better option based on weight consideration but you can double check that with Quique.

Status: offline 		1.4 has a lot less power. 1.8 arriving tomorrow, so will do exhaustive testing in my GSP 68" Yak (the ugly, fat, fiberglas beast; looks good, flies fine but it is HEAVY - do not recommend). That will be the test bed for the RCS.
If it doesn't measure up, out it goes.
The QQ Yak will be too "fine" for a trash motor.....

The 73" will build out at approximately the same weight, and while it has a 1" longer wingspan, it also features a deeper chord, resulting in 17% more wingarea. The tail area has also changed. This change was made to enhance the 3D ability while still maintaining the precision found in the 72".

Quique said he believes a lot of people will be pleasantly surprised with it's uncanny stability in high alpha flight. He says it waterfalls like he has never seen. Yet snap rolls and tracks with precision.

Other changes were made in response to customer input... The hingepoints have been replaced with metal pinned flat hinges (aka Klett style) and the plastic clevises have been replaced with top quality ball links. 2/56 rods are gone and the plane will ship with 4/40 titanium pushrods.

Also changed is a new rudder servo arm and stronger composite gear.

He also stated that with the increased wingarea, the plane will easily accept the smaller gas engines... to include the Evolution 26, 3W28 and RCS 1.80... others that come to mind might be the Roto 25 and if they prove to be reliable... the new CCRCPro GF26I-SP

Status: offline 		Since I don't have my 73" yet (and don't have the 72" either) I can't be sure of just what weight we are talking...

It has been hard in the past to gas power panes these size due to airframe weight/engine power ratio. But something like the 3W28 might do nicely...

They 3D 10-11 lb ExtraFun's with it...

In the same weight class is the ZDZ 40RE coming soon... 2.4 lbs... looks like maybe 2.75 lbs with ignition. Lighter than the 3W28i... You can go tuned pipe or inv. pitts and only be maybe 3/4 lb more than an O.S. 1.60 bird. Then taking into account takeoff weight with 18 oz of glow fuel instead of 12 gas... you aren't far off at all...

And a 40cc would haul a 12 lb plane all over the place and have serious power...

At 5.35" from firewall to prop hub, you'd only need 1/8" spacers behind the engine and a hole cut out of the firewall for the carb to stick through.

There would be hardly any cutout required in the cowl thanks to the rear exhaust...

I'll be running my RCS 180 this w.e., and will know pretty quickly whether or not I need a "Plan B" for the QQ. I'm hopeful....it is EXACTLY 15.5 oz heavier than the "aerobatic" OS 1.60 setup that many have experience with. Taking 8 oz of fuel weight out of the "takeoff weight" part of the equation, I'm pretty hopeful.

Now, before folks start screaming - I am fully aware that the RCS does NOT, and WILL NOT, put out the same power as the OS 1.60, but I'm hoping because it will turn a larger diameter prop at lower rpm, that things will be LOTS better in the slower-airspeed performance envelope.

Either way - I cannot wait - and I will get WHATEVER gasser will make it work. The Brilleli 25cc on EI could also be a workable solution..... if it builds out at 11lbs.

Then maybe a 3.88 oz CF tuned pipe...



But that depends on the ability to stick one int here...

Status: offline 		Yeah I may not either... the little inv pitts muffler they make is SMALL and light (and probably loud) Here is a pic of BBriBro's Giant UCanDo with it installed... He had some difficulties in that particular engine and never got it to run properly...

The new design isn't gonna be out though until late spring early summer but will feature the new lipo friendly ignition (light baby).

Sure is a sweet compact install though huh?
