Ken,

Sorry to hear about your cowl.

THanks for letting us know. I haven't fitted my cowl yet and I bet you saved me from doing the same thing.

Chuck

Actually I managed to get a fix on the cowl. Since I had yet to cut the hole where it was supposed to be I made a template from what I already had cut out. Then I cut where the hole is supposed to be. Now I have a plug that fits the top hole. I have epoxied and Glassed the plug

OK, here's a pic of the cowl patched already and the ailerons hinged on to the wings.

I should make allot of progress on the plane this weekend. I think I have everything I need to get it finished. Plus winds are supposed to be in excess of 25mph. SO it gives me a reason to stay inside and work.

Good job Ken! How much of the engine is actually going to stick out of the cowl? I'm wondering if my Brison 2.4 will require a large cut. I'll obviously need an exit for the exhaust and for engine cooling but it would be nice to keep the engine in cowl.

Here's the cowl all trimmed out with a DA 50 and Slimline Smoke exhaust. As you can see it took allot of trimming.
I am also showing the Prop clearance with 2.5" engine stand offs.

The wraparound muffler is not really the best choice for this plane as you can see.

Bisson makes a side mount muffler that fits with mimimal trimming, just make the hole for the cylinder a little wider.

Ken,

That looks good. Can u also pls post a pic of the cowl/engine from the side? just wanted to see how much the engine head is sticking out. Did you also make any holes for the cooling/airflow ?

If there are any noise restrictions at your field the Slimline will be the best choice regardless of how it looks from underneath. Nice ARF Tom !!!

Ken,

Very nice job of mounting the cowl. Based upon your recommendation I switched the stand offs on my DA 50 from 3" to 2.5 inches. Thanks for letting me know. That fit looks really good. BTW I bought the same exhaust as you. I didn't know the BIsson mount would make a difference? (This is my first gasser and it a total learning experience) Is the Bisson exhuast louder? Is it more efficent?

Tom mentioned "Bisson makes a side mount muffler that fits with mimimal trimming, just make the hole for the cylinder a little wide," can some provide a link so I can look at one?

Thanks

Chuck

Not true, the Bisson side mount is quieter than the Slimline wraparound. It looks like this.

How does it compare powerwise to the regular style Pitts? I had one of those mounted to a ZDZ 60 a while back & it was kinda restrictive compared to the cannister system I am running now. I don't know how it would compare to a Pitts.

I hate to butcher up a cowl, but I also hate to choke the performance on an engine.

How are the finished weights here?

Is anyone planning on putting a BME55 in this? How is the balance with other light engines?

Flight reports?

I designed this plane to handle a DA-50 and not need special hardware like a tuned pipe.

The whole idea here is to give you something that does not need to use a bunch of expensive add-ons. With a DA-50 it will be way overpowered no matter what muffler you use, there's no need to spend $250 additional on a tuned pipe and header.

The plane with DA-50 should be under 15 lbs. ready to fly dry.

It will be nose heavy with a DA-50, should balance well with that BME 55.
