Question Mike? How much did you overlap the blue monokote film over the edge of the lusterkote paint?

Jim,

1/4" to 3/8” should do. On the lower side of the wing I ran it to the start of the fillet on the wing belly piece. On the wing top I made sure it was covered by the fuselage fillet.

Too pretty to fly. Mike, you should take it up to Toledo next year, and enter it in the static display contest. Guys our age will get all nostalgic and stuff.

It should probably be hanging from the ceiling in the AMA museum.

Great job mike.....

one thing Mike noted about the monokote process that some tend to overlook.....

Buy a BIG box of razor blades, or big box of replacement x-acto blades. Sometimes Razor blades work best and are often less expensive.

The blades will get dull from the monokote VERY quicky. You would think you were cutting steel.

Once that happens, they will tear the covering rather than cut it... and those torn edges ruin your finish.

No, don''t throw the blades out... they are fine for building and other wood cutting needs usually.

Thanks for the nice comments guys.

As you know from the preface at the beginning of the thread I’ve wanted a Blue Angel since the 80s. It is so wonderful to see it at this point in the construction with its beautiful shiny colors designed by Yoshioka. Knowing I built it from a pile of balsa and plywood does my heart good!

Many thanks to all the people below that made the project possible for me and for other RCers that would like to build a Blue Angel in the future.

Ron Ellis, plans, wing temples and canopy
Tony Howard canopy plug and canopies
Dan Hines wing and stab cores
And all the folks that provided background documentation, e.g. history, variants, color schemes.

Hello,
I've watched your Blue angel build thread for quite some time. I recently dug out my old MK blue Angel Kit that I aquired in the '70's. It was interesting to see the differences between the pics of the plans you posted early on compared to the plans that came with my kit. Your plans seem much more detailed than mine, with detail sketches of the retracts, wing/stab assembly etc. The main difference I noted was that your plans showed a completely different fuselage/vertical stabilizer fairing. Yours is a one piece block assembly and mine is simply 2 pieces of filet material between the horizontal stab and vertical stab. There is also what appears to be possibly a plywood trailing edge to the ailerons, with a Japanese notation pointing to it ??? Also, on my set of plans, they point out black pinstriping between the red & white on the wing & stab. There are very many more subtle differences between the 2 plans. With all the research you have put into this project, I thought you may have some insight as to which generation blue angel your plans are compared to mine. I think I bought the kit when MRC (Model Rectifier Corp.) was importing the kits from MK, as there are a couple MRC decals in the kit. There is also what appears to be a possible production number on the end of the kit box 00135.
