What is the difference between Top Gun and Scale Masters? The subject is too broad to do a search here in R/CScale and get a definitive answer. I can find a website for Scale Masters, which defines what they're about, but don't see one for Top Gun. Do the two organizations cooperate or are they totally separate and completely autonomous?

Try www.franktiano.com and look for Top Gun.

Trying to compare any two events is like opening up a really big can of worms.

Personally, I have been to Top Gun many times, I flew there last year and will fly there again this year.

I have never attended Scale Masters, not for any particular reason, I just haven't been there.

Both attract some of the best pilots and models in the world.

If you have the time, plan to attend one or the other. Or both!

Top Gun and Scale Masters are two separate organizations. Both use similar but not identical rules. Most of their rules are very close to those used by AMA but there are some differences. Many of the planes you see at Scale Masters also compete in Top Gun.
Scale Masters is a competition that has more than one event. In order to get to the Final event you must compete and qualify through a regional qualifier.
Top Gun is the property of Frank Tiano. You get there by Invitation and its a one time a year event.
Hope this helps.

Another big difference between the two is that Top Gun is held in Lakeland, Florida every year while the Scale Masters Championship Contest moves to various locations. This years Scale Masters finale will be held in Muncie, Indiana.

I have the Top Gun 2005 Video. I guess I didn't understand Top Gun was a totally autonomous group, headed up by Frank Tiano. Without thinking too much about this whole thing, I rather assumed Top Gun was the final competition for the Scale Masters, until I read an article in one of the magazines about the Scale Master's Championships. When I left R/C in the mid 90s, AMA Scale competitions and Scale Masters were (I think) the only games in town. Since I didn't compete, and am unsure if I would want to compete now. I really didn't pay much attention.

I found it interesting that Frank, himself, sorta ripped the Top Gun Judges for not giving the Fiesler Storch in the video a higher static score! Then goes on to jokingly rip on World War One and civilian models!
