I have the SJ 76 T version and was curious about the largest prop it will handle. The engine is now well broken in and runs great. I have been using a 12X5 APC with 5% ritches brew, and getting steady readings in the high 14,000 rpm range. I am installing it on a 60 size 3D plane. Would something like an APC 14X4 wide blade be too much? Also, what RPM range should I be expecting with the larger props and it being the torque version 76 engine?

Thanks much,

John Wells

Hi John...

Thanks for writing

I would imagine a 14x4 will work quite well. With which ever prop works best, try to keep the RPM over 12,800 and you will be ok.

If you have a 'torque' version, it has a slightly longer muffler tuned for the mid 13,000 range. Setting the engine to run at about 12,800 on the ground will let it unload (slightly rich) to about 13,300 in the air. Then when you pull vertical and the engine leans a touch, it will get up to 13,500 which is right in the target you wish to be in. So, the muffler comes into play about the time you really need it.

With the Turbo-Jett mufflers, I have found this approach to work very well (after the engine has been broken in at higher RPM).

Let me know how you make out!
