Has anyone had a big problem with the Tamiya plastic tracks breaking very easily?
I only have about 1 hour of run time on mine(on carpet) and have broken two links already.
I did not stress them very much either!!!!
BYA is sold out ,but I will be getting the metal ones when they are instock($180.....wow!)

Where are they breaking at, Jstrat?

I'm using the plastic KT tracks on carpet and outdoors and have yet to break any, but mine is the older clutch steer model. It doesn't allow pivot steering. When you do this you place a lot of stress on the track, especially on carpet. Even real tanks have limits on where they can and cannot pivot steer.

Also, are you sure you are adjusting track tension properly?

Something I found on mine is that the sprockets had some very noticeable flash where the tracks meshed with them. This was causing the teeth to wear the tracks funny, not to mention place stress on them in one small spot instead of across the entire contact area. I took a small jewelers file and smoothed out anywhere the track touched the sprocket.

I know that one member of Texas Armor regularly has trouble with his stock KT tracks, but I think it is mostly the pins. Are the track links actually breaking or are they coming apart? CA in the right places wouldn't help, would it?

The metal tracks sound like they are a really good idea and probably the best upgrade for your tank, but before I paid $180.00 for a set, I would definately ask someone who uses them to make sure that you will not be buying metal tracks that still come apart.

Good Luck!
Jason

Here is a pic of were they are breaking....and I try not to "super spin" especially with the KT,it's too heavy for that kind of stuff.
As far as tension goes, I installed as per instruction(removed 4 pieces as instruction said to do),if only removed 2,then was way too loose.

Well, at least that looks like something that would not be a concern with a set of metal tracks. Get ready to dig deep in that pocket! You'll feel better about the $$ when the tracks arrive.

Sorry for all the questions Jstrat;

Are your track pin heads on the outside of the track where they can be seen or are they on the inside against the hull?

As far as the tension goes, I got rid of the springs in the drums. Every time I would accelerate, the idler would lurch forward creating all kinds of slack in the track until it sprang back out.

I also modified the tension assembly according to this link: http://www.sead.us/technology3.html

It works great and you don't have to open the tank up to adjust the track tension!

For some reason, mine are on the outside. Seems a little easier to see if they are coming out, though. The only thing is, they snag on the mud guards, which is why it doesn't have them any more.

the stock kt tracks breaks a lot, reason:
1. the wall of pin hols on inner block as shown above are too thin.
2. there is no tension adjustment from idler, almost no tension. with the force, those tracks break especially in sudden movement.

I broke at least 6 of them during the battle in Danvill, va. my king tiger was the scene big time.

when you buy those metal tracks, be careful. some vender claim super quality, but very very low quality. they sell $180. want to know who sell those bad quality ones? check front page of my site.
