Will do, Don. I'll post a "before" (hideous) and "after" (gorgeous).

I was thinking while joining the wings together that it would be nice if this was offered as a 2 meter pattern plane. Could you just imagine...?

On the Great Planes website there is a box for making airplane suggestions. I doubt I am the first, but I recommended just such an airplane, to be called "Venus FAI", with plug-in wings, airfoiled stab/rudder, adjustable wing/stab incidences, pipe tunnel, tank-on-CG option, etc.

I agree it would be nice but I already have one of those. This is the only plane I've had that outshines the Venus II. A Typhoon 2000 / YS 140 / Hatori pipe. I really bought the Venus to fly on the days I just don't feel like messing with screws, bolts, retracts, etc. not to mention the fact that the flimsy retracts will not allow it to turn on our 30' runway. I love my Venus II but trust me the old Typhoon can whip it's butt anyday

I came across this pic while hunting for the Typhoon. Just thought I would put a face with the name. This is just after the maiden on my Venus II. I had a Saito 125 in it at that time. It went South in no time so I swapped in the OS and never looked back.

Ain't I handsome

I have an extra Saito 100 that I was thinking about putting in the Venus II. Has anyone flown it with the 100 and can you comment on performance? Thanks.

If you just want to fly around in circles and do a few rolls and loops it will be OK. As mentioned in the above post I had a Saito 125 in mine to begin with and I was disappointed. I had a Saito 100 in a plane a few years ago and pulled it and put in my OS 120. The difference was incredible.

Will it fly ? Of course it will. Will you be happy ? Just the fact that your interested in the Venus II in the first place tells me you will not be. Also since the 100 is so much lighter than the OS 120 I would suggest you mount the servos up front in the fuse.

Hey guys i have a question. When yall installed the aileron control horns, did the bolts go all the way through to the other side of the aileron so that you can use the backplate? Mine are too short.

I don't do plastic control horns. On better type planes I always replace them with something like this. I have had too many problems like yours and poked too many holes in my covering with screw drivers.

Got the parts from Tower to make the OS 1.20 inverted with the inside header and flex pipe to keep the engine under the cowl, where all engines should be!

Everything is done except carving out the cowl, so I decided to give it a rest for today and start fresh on that tomorrow morning. I didn't want to move the throttle linkage around too much, so I just made a funky "back-bend" in the wire and it seems to work just dandy. I just happened to have a lenght of blue silicone header pipe connector, which worked out perfectly for the flexpipe muffler junction, and I had some heavy zip ties which I think are going to work out just fine for cinching everything down.

Finished photos in a couple of days... if the weather holds.

Looking good Bob. Now that our Cdn. dollar is worth TWICE what your dollar is I'm getting very close to ordering that YS 110. Then you will have the only one like that in existience.

Congrats, Chris! Very nice set-up there! Isn't it great to fly an airplane that does what you tell it and stays where you put it?

I "re-maidened" mine today with the new set-up, with the inverted OS 1.20. Got in six flights with no issues. And most importantly, the engine ran just as well as before with the tank remaining in the stock position. Same as before, spooled up at 9000 rpm with the 14x10 APC. No flooding and the idle wasn't the least bit richer. I had anticipated that it might be, so I turned in the idle screw about 1/2 turn, only to find I needed to turn it back out to its original position.

Cutting cowl openings is not my favorite thing, but I took my time and got it pretty close. I was a bit worried that the engine might overheat, so I did some long uplines and even did a fairly long hover (about 20 sec) to see if the performance would change. Steady as a rock and not a hint of power drop, and the cylinder head was not unduly hot upon landing... and this on a very warm afternoon.

I took my camera but forgot the CF card, so I'll have to post a photo later. This is a very nice way to go, and my style points just took a leap even if my flying skills didn't!

Bob, good to hear everything went well. I'm dismantling my computer tomorrow in anticipation of my leaving for home on Monday. I'll be "off the air" for awhile so have a good summer. Everybody enjoy your Venus II - I know I will

Don ......................

P.S. Did you notice the sound change the flex pipe creates ?

Don, may your de-camp go smoothly!

Yep, with the flex pipe the sound is substantially quieter, about a half octave lower in pitch, and has a softer edge to it. I thought it might need a little tuning, what with the exhaust dwelling in the pipe longer, but it seems the same to me so far, and the idle is about the same. I need to tweak the throttle linkage because I didn't get it just right and had to run the trim to the upper limit, but that's just an installation thing. Man, I hate screwing with a throttle that's set perfecly! Engine power output seems unaffected.

I suppose it's fortunate that my laziness won out and I didn't change the tank position, because it really does seem utterly unaffected. One factor may be the GP fueler that is mounted at the top of the firewall. When the tank is filled it doesn't affect the fuel line fromt he fueler down to the carb, so there is no siphoning effect set in motion. But then when I stop the engine there is also no flooding of the carb, so maybe it's jsut an OS thing. A friend of mine has the H9 Spitfire with inverted Saito 100 and it floods if you just look at it. Purely anecdotal, yes, but the engine and tank positions are very close to what I now have with the Venus/OS. Go figure.

I completed my O.S. 1.20 "a-la-Don M" install and here is the result. Thr first photo is the original config with the engine installed on an angle with the cylinder sticking out.

How do you guys think this plane will fly with an FS-91? I'm building one for my club to use as a raffle plane at our 4-stroke rally and got that engine with the package. I'm just about to mount the motor and was thinking about lobbying the president to get the OS FS-120. What do you folks think.

Al, I think a FS .91 would not be enough for this airplane, which typically weighs around 8.5 lbs. The FS 1.20 has adequate vertical performance unless you throw in a snap roll on the way up and bleed off momentum. For no-compromise performance a 2-stroke 1.20 or the YS 1.10 would be the way to go.

I would LOVE to put a YS in it but since Great Planes donated the plane and engine I guess I'm stuck. Oh well. It will fly with a .91. If the lucky winner wants to put a better motor in it, hell they got the airplane, radio, and engine for the cost of a raffle ticket. I'm not going to sweat it.

Gotta say though that I was sufficiently impressed with the build quality that I went out and bought an 81" GP Yak 54. Gotta get the club plane finished so I can start on my plane. 8-)

Bob,

In all the packing fray I logged on with the wife's laptop for a second. No fair man ! You did a better job with your cowl than I did.

Thanks, Don! But you showed the way, man.

Got in about 6-7 more flights yesterday, for a total of about 15 with the new set-up. The zippy-tie/silicone coupler thing is working out great, with just enough firmness to hold everything tight and enough give to go with the vibration a bit.

BTW, the cowl was a very tight fit, so tight that it distorted the FG in other areas when I forced it around the firewall. No doubt it would quickly develop little stress fractures like the first cowl. So I cut a little stress relieving slot in the bottom of the cowl and spread it out a smidge, then used CA hinge material to make a little bridge over the slot to firm up the cowl again, then put a piece of red trim tape over it.

Hey, Al, sell me the winning ticket and I'll be quite satisfied with the .91!

Never hurts to have a spare engine in the spare parts bin.
