I am using Hitec HS-6965HB servos on all surfaces. Extremely fast and plenty power. When I pull the elevator stick down (plane on the ground) and let go of it, it rapidly bounces as it returns to center, The elevator responds to the bounces of the stick! interesting reaction!

Probably not. I'm waiting on the 1.10-sized Black Magic to be released and bought the motor with that in-mind. I rather learn to tune and run it in a throw-away plane than in one I actually built. When I move it over to that airframe I'm going to use a Hyde mount to take down the shakes.

Not slamming the Venus though. I originally got it as raffle prize win and was incradible surprised to find out how nicely it flies.

Al,
I've got a new Venus II still in the box. It's my next project. Do you have any advice or suggestions about assembling this plane? Is there anything you would change if you were building one now?
Regards
JC

It's true a 'Great Plane'. I don't like their method of gluing in the stab so I used copious amounts of CA (thin then medium). I do mean copious though. I opened-up the tailso that I could apply it from the inside as well.

Other than that and mounting the tank on the CG (my preference with a YS up front) I built it exactly as instructed. As I'v mentioned, I won it in a club auction BUT it was my club and I built it for the auction!! so I know how it was built (this is testament to the idea that one should build for a customer as one would build for themselves!!). 8-)

My advice is to get rid of the plane; I've heard some really terrible things about it. You should just throw it in the mail (with my address on it)

I'll give you $50 for it when you get it!

I have built 4 Venus II's and I have found only one weak spot of which I have fixed on the last 2 builds.
The weak spot will only show up if you have a rather hard landing, but one in which a plane should normally survive. The fuse can snap in two just aft of the wing saddle.

The Problem:
It is in the fuse sides just rear of the wing saddle. If you look inside and trace the plywood on bottom sides just aft of the wing saddle you will see what i mean.

The Fix:I have a fix that adds just 1 oz (including ample epoxy) to the entire plane and improves the Venus's ability to handle a rough landing. Cutting 4 small pieces of half moon shaped 1/16 ply (2 sets of 2) and adding one set to each side. With this configuration I have had an incredibly hard landing in which the fuse survived fine. In the next day or so I will try to post some pictures of the ply pieces, how they are applied and pictures of a dismantled fusalage showing their installment...

Funny I have one with over 300 flights on it ( I put 5 on it today ) Everything is in as good shape as it was on flight #1. I added nothing and changed only a bit of hardware ( my preference ).

Agreed. I've planted mine several times and other than having to bend the gear back into shaft (I meant PLANTED/CARRIER LANDING/SEMI-SURVIVABLY CRASH) it's still in perfect shape. Basically it's a really good, sturdy design.

Guys,

I have been following this thread for quite some time (Wow - 31 pages!) and am just about ready to start assembling my Venus 2. I'm not quite ready for a super YS 110 and plan to run a tried and true OS 91FX in mine. I have Dave Shadel's muffler and it should work okay for my ability.

My question deals with servos. I really love the power and centering of my JR 8311 and Futaba 9255 servos, but was wondering if the Futaba 9252 servos would work okay. I would still run a 9255 to the rudder. Yes, these are expensive helicopter servos, but they also love flying in fixed wing airplanes.

Thanks,

Ron

Ron,

I looked at the specs for thoses servos (s9252 & s9255) and i think they would work just fine. I think the S9252 would also work just fine on the rudder as well, no need to put in 9255's (unless you already have them). I have hitec HS-6965's on all my surfaces (including rudder) they have the same torque rating as the S9252's. I have never felt that i needed more on any of the surfaces, even in extreme aeorbatics (after 700 flights).

One mention however. If you have not already made your purchase and are not against Hitec products, check out HS-6965. Unlike the S9252's they can also run at 6 volts giving more torque and speed than the 9252's And... they are the same price.

Thanks Codfish,
Years back we were having a spot landing contest during which I unintentionally invented a completely new maneuver. Those who saw my spot landing called it the "Kamikaze Touch and Go". You can probably imagine what it looked like.
I think it's always easier to do some preventive strengthening in the building stage than to do repairs and beefing-up later.

Thanks for the help. I have the 9252s and 9255s already and was hoping to recycle them from my "Surplus Parts" to a pattern plane. I also run Duralite 5.6 volt regulators and Li-ion 7.4 volt batteries with all these servos and do not anticipate any trouble. I know Futaba has suggested these were not good with 6 volts, but I have been running the Duralite regulators for about four years with no problems (5.1 - 5.6 volts seems like a good compromise).

I appreciate the info on the Hitecs. I'll check into them.

This could be fun. I haven't flown a pattern plane in over twenty years. Yikes!

Codfish,
I was planning on using Futaba 3152 digital servos in my Venus.
SPECS: Speed: .22 sec/60° @ 4.8V, .18 sec/60° @ 6V
Torque: 69 oz-in @ 4.8V, 87 oz-in @ 6V

Do you think the Hitec HS6975 Servos would be a better way to go?

Does anyone in here have a Venus II for sale?
If you have one in good condition, and preferably set up for an OS-120AX 2-cycle,
please let me know.
