I hoped that I would not need to trim much of the cowl for the cylinder. That was the plan anyway... turns out that because of the curvature of the lower-front part of the cowl I needed to trim a bit more that I would have liked (plus, of course, I wanted to allow for cooling):

I am not unhappy with the final amount of the cowl that needed to be removed, but I was hoping for less of a "gaping hole" and more of a "simple opening." The nice thing is that (if you look at the left side of the plane in the picture above <same as the picture in my avatar> ) it is very clean looking. It did accomplish the above goals too!

Nope. He e - mailed me and knows there is a problem. We'll just have to wait until he figures it out.

Sorry about that guys... RCU didn't seem to like my upload of the images last night but when I sent the same files this morning they were fine!

Anyway, the only "major" change that I made to the plane was to move the tank back to the C.G. (since I am running a pumped engine). It looks like they could have *almost* setup the kit to easily allow for this without any surgery, but the there is really only a small amount of cutting necessary anyway...

The C.G. seems to fall (if my calculations are correct) right on the former in the middle of the fuselage. Here, I marked the area that needed to be removed:

I then removed that area (including the lower portion of the former... doesn't seem to be quite enough room to slide the tank in underneath it):

I then mounted a small hardwood stick (to the sheeted area where the tank will mount) to give me something to fasten the tank to. It is not actually shown here, but I just used foam around the tank and a zip-tie to hold the tank in place. Also, a short balsa stick in front to prevent the assembly from sliding forward.

End result works really well. I removed a little light-plywood (and didn't use the "tank-holder" piece of wood that is provided in the kit), but I guess that it's not that big of weight savings (hey, every little bit counts right?).

Thanks for the pics. Robert. As an alternative how would it work to invert the engine straight down and stick the exhaust out the cowl ?

Of course you could mount the engine in the standard way, Don! I always dislike that muffler "hanging out" the side of the cowling so I tried the above method. It would certainly look more "typical" (normal?) with a standard inverted mounting...

You might also notice that I needed to install a remote-glow connector with this setup also. Well, I could have cut a hole in the cowl that would allow the connector to attach directly to the glow-plug but, because of the position of the cylinder, that would have been on the side of the cowling (and been yet another strange looking cut-out in the cowl).

Oh, in case you didn't notice, Great Planes just posted a video of the Venus II on their website:

I'll be using a Du Bro Soft mount. On the 125 Saito. Watching the Dave Patrick, "Wring it out Vol II" Made me wonder. Is it a good mount? Thats all "The" Hobby shop has in these neck of the woods. What are you guys using?

This is the only mount I've used for years without 1 single failure. I had a 120 4 - stroke mounted on a #686 which is only rated for a .91, no problem. I just had a MVVS 26cc gasser / tuned pipe mounted on a #688, no problem. I will use nothing else.

Here's a pic of the MVVS gasser / Du Bro #686

I just watched the video. First time I've seen the bottom of the wing, I like the contrast to the top colors. Somebodies thinking.

What tank did everyones Venus II come with? The tech info on the Tower and GP websites says it comes with a 480cc/16oz tank, but mine came with a 420cc/14oz tank, whcih seems smallish for an airplane this big.

RobertC,

You're a man after my own heart- that's what I plan to do with my tank set up. The plane arrived yesterday afternoon and it looks great; really complete, too- I didn't realize it came with an aluminum spinner. Not a Tru Turn, true, but a lot nicer than a plastic spinner.

Thinking out loud: is there any reason a person couldn't use a Pitts style muff on the YS and mount the engine fully inverted? (something I'm missing?). If possible, that's the direction I plan to take. A little spendy, but nice when it's all finished. Overall, pretty impressed with the quality..

Great weather we're having!

I thought about that Sam. Problem is, I don't own an inverted Slimline and I couldn't find the dimensions (well, length) of the muffler on their website. I was afraid that it would be too wide to fit entirely in the cowl and I would need to holes where either side of the muffler protrude! Again, I don't know for sure. Maybe it would fit perfectly. Oh, and there is also the issue of distance between the cylinder and firewall... again, I don't know how big the muffler is. I do know that Chief has a good price on them right now!

The weather here is gorgeous! Might have to leave the office a bit early today...

I just read an article on interference due to long extensions. For example: servos being installed on the tail of a plane. It says you can eliminate them by wrapping the servo extension 7 times around a ferrite. Problem is weight. Has anyone had any problems with interference, and how have you solved it?

Just curious, guys. I am in the process of putting together my new Venus II. I am using an OS 1.20 AX engine. I was thinking about the angle mount so as to direct the exhaust out the bottom through that rear-angled area behind the cowel. Will the exhaust fit in there? I don't have the engine yet, it's on order and should be here next week some time. I am also thinking about those round Dave Brown soft mounts.

DS.

DS, I haven't seen a 1.20AX so I cannot comment on whether it would fit there or not, but I suspect that it would be fine. You may notice that on my YS .91 I decided NOT to point the muffler into that "angled area" (although it is out the bottom of the cowling) and there is plenty of room for that. Let us know how it works-out with your 2-stroke!

As a quick aside, that engine should be incredible in the Venus! I am a big fan of the larger O.S. two strokes (I have two 1.60FX's... one in a Giant UCanDo and the other soon to be in a Performance Series Cap232). Easiest starting (and running) engine that I have had.

Well I finished my Venus 2 with the saito 125 on Du Bro soft mount. Engine at 90 degrees. Weighing 7.95 lbs. Will let you know how it flies next week.

Well I had some interference issues due to long extensions in a 2m F3A model. I had two JR DS-3328's in the tail and two DS-8231's in the wings. In the P-05 program there was a vertical eight with an integrated half roll in the middle. In this part of the maneuvre, the speed and the used elevator and rudder deflections are fairly high. Sometimes during the first half of the roll I had the motor "burb" very shortly. I did not realize it at first, but this "burb" was due to the receiver going very shortly to fail safe. My fail safe setting is throttle to idle, others hold. When I wrapped both the elevator and aileron servo wires three times over ferrite rings near the receiver, the problem dissapeared and I have not noticed it since and I'm still flying the same model. Based on this experience, I've started using twisted servo wires and ferrites in all my new models that have long wires.

OK. So I broke in my Venus 2 Saito on Monday; Ran one full gallon through it keeping the APC 15 X 8 prop at 4000 rpm's for the first 15 min and gradually leaning it to 8500 rpms. Re-checked the balance and nothing had to be adjusted. Gave the batteries and radio a good overnight charge for the next day. Tuesday morning set up the plane on the runway, started her up and checked rpm's to 8500. Started the take off run and required a little right rudder, took off in aprox. 40 feet. straight as an arrow. made a couple of circles around the field going upwind, downwind, left and right crosswind, no need for ANY trim adjustment. Did feel a need for a little more power but I'm still breaking in the engine so didnt want to lean it out more. Did four flights this way and all take off's and landings were perfect. After the final landing I leaned 1/2 a turn to 9000 rpm's and will fly it that way next week. I just wanted to let you guys know.
