Has anyone had any experience with the .40 size Ultimate bipe from World Models? I'd like some input on the kit quality and the flying quality.

The quality is absolute rubbish.
We have one it has had 6 flights and is now retired.

It is powered with an OS 40 FX engine and we fly from mown grass runways.

First flight - good handling
2nd flight - landed just off the runway (in pasture that is less than 4" high) and the landing gear mount pulled out.
3rd flight (the following weekend after repairs) - the front bulkhead was noticed to be loose.
4th flight (the following weekend after epoxying the front bulkhead back in and adding gussets) - flew ok
5th flight - flew ok
6th flight - it landed just of the runway under control due to some apparent control issues (safer to land it immediately than to risk it crashing) . - when it was collected it was noticed that the servo tray and a number of the bulkheads were loose.

The plane is now sitting in the "load of junk" pile in the hobby shed. It appears that the parts have been laser cut and then glued together (very poorly) with a very small amount of CA. The glued joints are quite useless. In order to feel safe about flying the plane, it would need to be completely disassembled, prepared properly, re-glued and re-covered. If I wanted to do that, I wouldn't have purchased an ARF in the first place.

After talking to a number of fellow club members - this appears to be quite typical of World models products.

My recommendation - don't touch them.

I have the 50cc ULTIMATE that is nothing but problem's, glue joint's came apart practically every flight, if you break something,AIRBOERNE is the only U>S> distributor and you will have major problem's getting part's ,I have bent 3 set's of wing tubes and it takes 2mo's to get them ,this last time they sent me the wrong one's. I personally will never buy a world's model's product ever again. AIRBORNE'S customer service just plain SUCKS! save yourself the trouble ,spend a lil' more and go with a better manu., it will save your sanity.

I have a World Models 40 size Ultimate with a TH .75 engine. It's GROSSLY overpowered.

Plane flies great. Of course, I make it a point to land it on the runway, rather than the "pasture". I go through all the glue joints on EVERY ARF and drizzle some thin CA on all the joints. Thats just standard procedure on an ARF. I don't care who makes it.

I've got 4 World Models planes, and everyone of them is top notch quality. I have the 40 size Ultimate. Zen 50. 80" Patty Wagstaff with a G-62 and the 90" Extra 330L with a GT-80. Haven't finished the 330L yet, but it's typical of the quality I've come to expect from World Models. They make good planes.

Just because one guy missed the runway and knocked the LG off doesn't make their plane junk. Knocking the LG off was a pretty good hit, so I suspect thats what weakeened the rest of the formers in the plane. Mine has a couple dozen flights on it, and no problems.

As for the problem with the 50cc Ultimate--refer back to where I said that I go over all the joints with thin CA.

I've got a bunch of 50cc and 60cc planes. 7 to be exact. Manufacturers include BME, Hanger 9, Kangke, Great Planes, and World Models. I have gone over every square inch of those planes and put thin CA on every joint I can get at. You just have to do that. Some people are sloppy with their assembly, and others like myself, are more particular. I haven't ever had a plane come apart--and some of the more sloppy assemblers at our field have had several planes come apart.

I gues it just depends on your expectation, and your ability to pick up a bottle of glue.

Oh silly me - maybe I should run out and spend some money on some more WM ARF's then.

Especially as they last far less time than the other 40 (Yes 40) ARF's, made by other manufacturers, that we have in our fleet spread across 3 countries (Including China where the WM product is manufactured) and flown on a variety of surfaces.

As for a heavy landing knocking off the landing gear - WRONG - it was an outfield landing caused by a deadstick but it was a gentle landing in Australian Summer time Pasture which is quite dry grass less than 3" long. In fact the gentleness of the landing was testament to how well these models do actually fly - that is not what is in question here.

Of course I guess that my experiences flying in a number of countries (14 in fact) around the world are all wrong - Perhaps contrary to my experiences, most flying fields have beatifully cushioned and perfectly smooth runways made from some mystery surface that is more cushioning than short pasture.

Or maybe I just haven't sniffed enough CA yet to become an overnight expert!!.

BTW - a bit of thin CA poured onto whatever joints can be reached will not greatly improve the poor adhesion caused by poor preparation of laser cut surfaces in the first place - but it may compensate for poor quality balsa being used by whetting and adhering the fibres of the timber together - Let me guess when you do break one (assuming that, like every other RC flier that I have ever met, you have managed to do so) - all of the breakages are a distance away from where the bulkheads are attached - if so, this is more likely to be because the adsorbed CA has done it's job by whetting and adhering to the wood fibres resulting in a somewhat more brittle, yet higher tensile, substrate than the raw timber - you may find that the breakages are at the edge of this whetted area. In the case of our model - the issue was a lack of initial adhesion due to poor surface preparation of the laser cut surfaces. The result - I choose to purchase other brands that have not given me any such problems. If you want a truly good model that is built 100% perfectly - the only way to guarantee that is to take the time to do so yourself - from scratch with hand selected timber - Me - I'd rather be flying.

I have had 3 world models planes. Everyone has been excelent. I also epoxy every joint I can reach on a arf just to be safe. That is just common sense. These guys build their planes at high speed by the hundred. Some joints are bound to have less glue. Just epoxy the ones you can reach and go fly. I have had great support from airborn models ( their U.S.A distributer ). The hardware is great and the balsa stock is as good as any I have seen. Of course I have only flew in one country (U.S.A) and dont have 40 airplanes in my fleet but I am working on it and Im sure I will add another world models arf to my collection. For the price they charge for their planes I think they are great. Not saying that I am a expert on arfs but these are just my opinions based on my experiances so far.

I have the WM ultimate 30. Same as the 40s just a different color. When I bought this plane ARF's were very uncommon. I originally put an OS 32sx on it, but now I run an 46FX. This plane has been very solid. I have owned it for over 6 years. Very stable flier!. Good quality.
