Well, three weekends of flying starting with the Midwest Slope Challange and the 18th of May, Topeka control line contest weekend before last and SPADfest this last weekend. Now after I get the rest of my planes unloaded, cleaned and stored I can get to putting that Viper together. They did put some pylons up Sunday morning at SPADfest and I flew my Flipper in a run what ya brung race. I would have preferred a little longer course as I had to constantly have the Flipper on edge. I'm sure it's slow for a fast plane but it's plenty fast for 5 bucks of plastic. Soon as they get a picture of it up on the weekend website, I'll post a pic. Hopefully I'll get down Joplin way sometime in July.

Did yo9ur new Q-500 bite the dust?
We in Joplin are running the 424 class planes primarily. The Lanier Predator II and the Great Planes Viper seem to be good entry level planes for this class. Power is Thunder Tiger Pro .40 unmodified except to keep the darn muffler together, and broke in right. Prop APC 9X6, 15% nitro fuel. I recommend the Darol Cady mods of wheels, spinner nut and bladder tank. Some change out the wing bolts to nylon, but loc-tite works fine. Battery 370 ,mAh, servos, HiTec.
This puts everyone at the same speed, and makes the flying very interesting due to the fact now it is pilot skill and teamwork with your caller that makes the difference, not power or the latest speed improvement.
Call me 417-499-8919, be glad to show and talk to you.
I am available on Saturdays now in June and July. We practice every Tuesday night except the 3rd Tuesdays.
Dana from Joplin

June 26, Tues evening 5 to dark will be our best pylon race yet! Eddie will be up from Branson, I will have my two planes going, and have a House of Balsa T-6 with a .32 breathing on a Macs pipe. It is swinging a APC 9X6 1550RPM. It zips! For any planes not 424, it is competitive. And Jason Danhakle will be there (8th at the XFC). I will loan him one of the two 424 Vipers. We will have flagmen for cuts, and callers/starters. I hope to have enough people on hand to do this evening up right. Plus we may take a few shots with the radar gun, to see what we are cranking for MPH.
I have pylons for 3-pole and for 2-pole, although we may just run the 2-pole on the 26th, since we do not have an abundance of hard hats yet.
Anyone interested in participating, or watching what we are doing, come to the Joplin field. It is north of 7th st (Rte 66) west of town. Take Black Cat Rd north 1.1 miles, look for the red gate on the right.
Looking for you, Eddie. Sorry about last week, it was meeting night. No racing on the 3rd Tuesday.
Schedule for July looks like:
July 3 - Yes, full throttle!
July 10 - Yes, go fast turn left!
July 17 - No, meeting night, field not set aside.
July 24 - Yes, crank it up!
July 31 - Yes, Let's race!
Hopefully, we are through with the rain.
We will have starting platforms (plywood or concrete board) for starting roll-out - take off. Still must land on the grass field. Kill motor best method to keep prop fresh.

Just a heads up - the RC Barnstormers in Hillsdale, KS (we fly at Hillsdale lake) are planning a Q500 race for August.. c'mon up!

For 424, 428 and Rossi/MVVS Classes
Hillsdale Flying Field of the R/C Barnstormers

Registration at 9:00am
Racing to Begin at 10:00am
Fuel will be provided. Registration is $15.00 to recover the cost of Fuel and Awards and a Kansas Daily Park Pass.
We have lights and cages and cut monitors for #1 Pylon, but not 2&3. We expect to get in 5 rounds in all classes. The course is East West, regardless of wind! The Runways are all grass, mowed short and 100 feet wide by 600 long. Bring a canopy because we can’t use the shelter as it is too close to the course.

Directions: From 169 Highway going south from Olathe, take the Hillsdale Exit(255th St.) and go west 4.7 miles. The field is directly south of the dam for Hillsdale Lake. At the west end of the dam turn south, then the next right (also south) and then the next left(East)

Mr. Clean,
Do it!
We are keeping to the 424 rules for the 424 races.
We will race anything else that flys.
No lights yet, bring a hard hat.
Flags for cuts, you need to enlist a spotter.
I am personally having a blast, and have not had anything hit the dirt yet. I guess my time will come.
I am loaning out a perfectly good complete racer to get the interest up. Am I right in doing so?
Hope to see you in a few weeks.
Dana from Joplin

Guess I should have said that.. Sunday, August 5th is the planned date. I'll probably start a new post here in the Q500 forum to help spread the word, too. Thanks for asking!

that would be great. You can either e-mail me gordonmcw AT aol.com or my friend Carl that's promoting the event rcmelin AT comcast.net and get updated info, etc.

The race should be fun, it's been a while since we've had much activity around here, since our "spark plug" Doug Baker passed away a while back. Doug was very active, and he and I used to race together as a loose "team". I'm hoping my work doesn't send me somewhere overseas for that weekend, I'm looking forward to it!
