alright i am tired of ignoring the issue of me not understanding engines....funny i know...but seriously i have a couple of questions, 1) how can you tell how much power a engine has by the name? For Ex. in real life cars a car w/ 255hp has more power than a car with 150hp...so how can you tell how big an engine is by the name? 2) what does the 2.5 or 3.3 stand for or the .17 OS engines, does .17 or 2.5 stand for the power it has? i know that OS engine are 1 of the best so i dont need a lecture on that...thanx for any help.

Okay!

READY? Some examples....

A 4.6 HPI Nitro Star is also a .28. It is 4.6 CCs (cubic centimeters). That is the size of the combustion chamber. It is .28 cubic inches. One is just a metric measurement, one is non-metric.

Take Traxxas (please!)...they hype their 2.5 TRX engines....and many people confuse these with .25 big blocks...but really....a 2.5 is a .15 in cubic inches...and it's a 2.5 in CCs.

A .15 is 2.5 CCs....25 is actually 4.1 CCs....a .28 is 4.6....a .30 is 5.0 CCs.

Power is related to engine size.....BUT. an example again..(and let's stick to non-metric terms now)....a Hyper .21 8port engine has 8 ports inside to bring fuel in. It cranks out more peak horsepower than numerous .25 engines. Some .25 engines have say just 3 ports. Okay, maybe the three ports in the .25 are configured to swirl the fuel around in a way that gives the engine good response and tuning ability across a wide rpm range, so it is good for the average Joe. But the Hyper .21 8port is only happy when it is screaming and the fuel is flowing thru those 8 ports. Wow...race and top speed worthy, but not a flexible engine. More powerful than a .25? Sure. Easier to live with? maybe not. That is just an example.

However, given the limited technology (no cams, fuel injection, etc) power increases with engine size in most cases. But again, in many cases, you could have a .15 and upgrade to a sick-fast hi-revving .15 from a company known for race quality engines.

Visit www.HowStuffWorks.com and read up on 2-stroke engines. That'd help, too.

alright i understand but 1 last question....what is the main thing to look for when looking for how much power it has?(for ex. u said having 8 ports bbrings a lot of power)so is it how many ports it has that defines how much power or in special cases?...and btw thanx a lot for the info

more ports doesnt necassaraly mean it will have more power either. you could brag about how many features your engine has but if you dont have the timing right or the size of the ports or the angles of the ports, etc. correct, than the engine wont run very well at all. you have to be able to tell when the fuel/air mix should be sucked down into the crank case, and when it needs to move up into the combustion chamber, and when it needs to leave the exhast port and then be able to machine that very precisely for the engine to run well and be a powerful engine. so, i guess my point is, always buy from a name brand manufacturer... which there are a lot of these days.

It is 4.6 CCs (cubic centimeters). That is the size of the combustion chamber.

The displacement of an engine measured in Litre/cu. in/cu. cm is the volume measure from top dead centre to bottom dead centre. This does not include the combustion chamber as changing the volume of the combustion chamber changes the compression ratio.

The only way to find out how much hp an engine has it to look at the specs. Tower Hobbies usually has many details on their products. As mentioned more hp usually corresponds with more engine displacement.
