A good way to do the 3rd shock? It should be really secured, but the rear axle flexes.. so I am not so sure about having the shock mounted this way (through the steel pin) is the way to go?! Hmm...

if they left room for it to move then it'll be all good. if the shock is flush against the axle...then maybe not.

I think most users here do it this way, but I also prefer the U-bracket-with-ball-connector solution.

But even with room, the fact is that the axle really isn't meant to move smoothly inside of the ball cup / connector when moving beyond a certain degree of flex.. so that's why I am not so sure about this approach...

Maybe it is not an issue.. but I am just thinking outloud..

I use ball connector... ha!

I actually moved and altered my third's mounting. It was limiting movement having the upper mount straight above the shock, so I put it on the "firewall" as many have done, but also used a very heavy spring and have removed the shock shaft. This makes for a spring that won't come off, but is free to snake around any which way that's needed. True, there is no damping effect, but rear articulation is radical now compared to stock.

Lunchboxer this is how I've done the 3rd shock on my midnight pumpkin, but I haven't run it yet, so who knows if it will hold up. I think you've raised some excellent points and you certainly have more experience with this stuff than I do, so we'll see.

I'm also curious about alaska's change to mounting the 3rd shock bracket on the "firewall." I would think that would put the shock at a very strange and unproductive angle, but what the heck do I know!

Also, I have the CRP kit on the way, so I'm anxious to get that installed.

I only used the term firewall as it's the first vertical bulkhead between the motor and the interior, mine's mounted just the same as the pic at the top of this page. The only difference, is that I am using a spring that's unwilling to come off the lower and upper pivots and forms a sort of "S" shape when the rear is moving about. I'll try to post a pic when I have the opportunity. Now I'm planning on painting the wheels flat black and the body some solid color that I have yet to decide on, oh, and a dual wheeled wheelie-bar that articulates with springs.

Sorry about my ignorance, but what is that big blue blob in the center of your chassis?
