Jeff,

You're almost there!

It is indeed an Ace "Silver Seven" of approximately 1980 vintage. I got one of the first Silver Seven kits off the production line. In fact, one of the Vcc traces on the main board had an inadvertent open, which I corrected and notified Ace about.

Wonderful radio: dual rates, interchangeable RF boards, open gimbal sticks, etc.

Tom, is that the one that has the programmable micro-processor and has an internet forum that is still modifying and doing all kinds of neat stuff with them? That is very impressive to me. Anybody that can work with that level of electronics without letting the smoke out is amazing.

Ya know, I've been out of R/C for about 15 years and have lost touch with the Ace gear. Thanks for the tip - I'll look into that.

No, that would be the MicroPro-8000 that is the microprocessor Tx. Basically took the Silver-7 design and made it a microprocessor controlled radio I think. Do you know what the web address is for the enthusiast group for that radio? I have two and love them.

Thanks, Scott

I like that design, i'm thinking of doing a flying wing type (shrike or along those lines) like that with ailerons and elevator being tied together. it will be my second scratch built. you have any plans for that? i'm worried about the unknowns. there has to be some design concerns to a plane like that, cg? reflex? lateral stability? i would appreciate any help any of you could offer. im really looking forward to this desgn contest, i've been debating on entering, but i really hope some people will put their design on CAD so we can have some unique designs. im getting tired of the same ol stuff. i haven't been able to find any websites with a database of 1/2a 3 views that are workable. it would be great if we could start something like that with all the collective knowledge on this forum.

Darn, I would have got the Ace Radio one. I built an Ace Commander back then.

Anyone remeber the Owen Kampen Skampy? All sheet Pee Wee power and cute as a bugs ear. I've got the plans in my files somewhere.....

One thing to remember about all those RCM articles. Don Dewey was a big fan of the 1/2A stuff back then. Do you think that could have had something to do with it? Well, that and the fact that the Rand LR3 was so popular. You don't know what funny is until you see one of those wonders in action. Especially when it's changing throttle settings. Double up elevator during such encouraged one to select their throttle settings either during a loop or in very small increments with lots of down elevator in between.

Oh, look at that.... It's the Pipsqueek pylon racer.......

Well it's not a Heath, so is it a ACE with the TX case died black?

I have Simitar hanging from my ceiling that is about eight years old and has hundreds of flights on it. What a great model!!!

Always wanted to build his Bug's Ear for a TD .020. Remember that one, it was a free plan in March 82' MAN.

You guys are bringing back some memories! Those 1/2As RCM published articles on were great airplanes! And, the arrival of Heathkit's "build-it-yourself" radios on the scene (purchased via their installment plan) was what got me started. The smaller systems and reliable small engines of today have me anxious to get back to the "fun. " Anbody remember the RCM construction article on a 1/2A P-51? The designer had several models published, but I can't recall his name. I couldn't keep all the RCM issues, but before trashing them I cut out and stashed away several plans, figuring...one day...

Bruce-

I LOVE THE SKAMPY!!!

I've brought up Owen Kapmen around here a few times and couldn't get a bite. Right now he is my favorite 1/2a designer. I got a kit for the Skampy off ebay from a really awesome older guy. He had two and wound up having only one set of plans. It was an honest mistake on his part and NO big deal. The guy that got the other one made me a copy and I got the originals from RCM.

What is Great about those RCM plans is that they send you the construction article with the plans. It was so great reading about the Skampy. I just had never heard about rudder only flight let alone designing a pylon racer for a .020 using radio gear the weighed in the pounds not ounces

That got me going on Owen, the Upstart is, in my opinion, one of the slikest looking 1/2a's out there. Plus he did the Whizard, the Pacer, the Ace High. All rea ly great looking planes.

I have the Skampy in a kit, the plans for the Upstart and am getting a Whizard from MrMulligan.

At the beginning of this thread a long time ago, Andrew was talking about how many amazing planes there are and how it is just so hard to keep yourself from going crazy and getting them all. I have bought a good deal of those RCM plans and every singe one of them is great.

I hope that someday they will all get finished, until then, it's just so hard to keep from looking at all of the OTHER beautiful planes in the RCM plans catalog.

Anybody out there every fly an Upstart, I would LOVE to see some pics of that.

as always,
t

The tragedy is that both Fred Reese and Owen Kampen are no longer with us. These gentlemen were 2 of the most prolific designers around. Fred Reese designed all those 1/2A planes for House of Balsa and of course Owen did for Ace, and consider the lot of planes that they had published in the mags but not kitted.
It really would pay to get the RCM plans catalogue, some of the best stuff ever designed is in it including the Skampy. It was origionally published in RCM

I'd say it is an ACE Silver 7. I had one with a red box, single stick, and all the Dwight Holley mods.

Grampaw:

That P51 you mentioned was designed by Fred Reese and is in fact the HOB P51. The kit has been around for many years and is a great model.

If you build it, cut the canopy from the top turtle deck moulding and use balsa instead. Then it can be covered with an iron on material.
