I just finished upgrading my CMP Spitfire for the upcoming season . I'm using a Brillelli GT 25cc engine and hi-torque servos with secured CF rods in place of the old wooden ones. No more slop . Needless to say the weight has gone up but I now have a CMP Spit that balances without adding weight to the nose. 115mm CG,

Question,, can I use small spacers on the back side of the retract mount to angle my gear forward slightly ? Or do I need to go ahead and bend them forward ? If bending is the only way what method would you use to bend them ? Heat ? Vise ?

Thanks WB pilots.

I would add shims as you state. You may need to modify the wheel wells a little, based on how much shimming you do.

Thank you for the advice.

At this time the wells are very over sized and un-sheeted. I will makes some wells after I get a good fit. I had played around with some larger scale wheels last year and ended up removing the plastic wheel wells to accomodate them. Bigger wheels do help this kite land smoother for sure.
Anyway,, I have plenty of room for a forward angle on the gear. And boy howdy does this plane need every bit of help it can get.
I must admit I worked hard last year to master landing the Spit. Other warbirds I've had and own now aren't nearly as nose-over prone. It's been several months since I've flown it and with a shiny new head, muffler stack and spark plug to worry about now I wanna make my re-learning curve a bit easier.

What would make a good shim. Washers ? Rubber strip ?

EDIT: Washers it is then.

I happen to be doing this on mine. This is my second cmpro spit. The first one never had any gear problems. I beefed it up. This one keeps tearing out the right side even with the same mods. So I have the gear out and have been looking at how I'm gonna do it. Need to strengthen and angle forward. I have shock absorbing struts that are straight so I'll be angling the new mount forward. I kinda wonder why a designer would cut lightening holes in ply ribs for gear mounts. (???) I plan on adding 1/8" ply to the mounting ribs and basically work from there. I havent chosen the wood for the rails yet but it looks like it will be some 1/2"x5/8" hardwood. Tomarrow is when I'm gonna cut out the old mounts with the dremel and start with a clean slate. I hate having unreliable gear mounts. I fly mine with a saito 120. Its adequate for power with a reasonable amount for reserve. Definately no barn burner. I mounted everything forward of the cg with a big battery under the gas tank and balanced with out adding any led. But it sure wouldnt hurt to move the cg forward just a tad more. Have you found the flaps to have any effect at all. I dont, and just dont use them anymore.

That has been a small debate here in the WB forum. I always use them and they do help slow the plane down some. Not a great deal but enough to help. Check it out by chopping the throttle up high and lowering them 100%. They work.

Just old pics with the nitro burner installed. Got the retract mounts angled and it seems to help the stance of this bird alot.
Tomorrow will be the backyard taxi test and the major dremel surgery to the cowling . Hope I can keep a little of the cowl sides when I'm done.
The mounts have always held up well in the past and took alot of abuse as I learned to land it. But with this 3lb gas engine I might be doing the same thing you are Edwin.
